Some quick first impressions: Shigofumi, They are our Noble Masters and Porfy no Nagai Tabi

Shigofumi

Ever since the past spring-season, Saturday has by far been my busiest day in terms of blogging, and it doesn’t look like the Winter-Season is going to change this, with yet another excellent series. Even though we’re only halfway the season yet, I’m pretty sure that Shigofumi has the best episode of all the new shows that have aired. It’s only the first episode, and it kept my interest throughout the entire episode with some excellent storytelling (and a very nice twist at the end. ^^;). Shigofumi turned into an excellent combination of Shinigami no Ballad and Jigoku Shoujo, and grabbed the best elements of them. The main character for this episode would have been better if he was a bit smarter (what idiot fires off an amateur-rocket in the middle of a city anyway?), but overall, we’ve got ourselves an gem here.

They are our Noble Masters

Well… at least it doesn’t take itself seriously, unlike the abominations of Rosario to Vampire and H2O, though something makes me suspect that some kind of melodramatic element will appear in the semi-final episode or something. In any case, instead of bad, They are our Noble Masters is just boring. There are lots of stereotypes and fanservice, but at least the plot doesn’t seem to be written by a whiny twelve-year-old who’s just hit puberty. Nearly everything about this series is just mediocre, though at least there is chemistry between the characters that kept me from falling asleep. Overall, this series will never become memorable, though at least it’s not the worst this season’s had to offer.

Porfy no Nagai Tabi

Okay, I know that this is rather useless, but please, someone sub this series, and don’t let it get horribly ignored like what happened with Les Miserables. There’s a very good reason why this is a series that’s part of the World Masterpiece Theatre-series: there’s no moe, no forced climaxes, no stereotypes, and instead it’s got genuine and detailed storytelling. Like expected, the big earthquake that separates Porfy from his sister has yet to happen, and I can imagine how the creators decided to use the first few episodes to flesh out the two of them and their mother, and already it has been an excellent slice-of-life series. Sure, this is definitely going to be the slowest series of the entire season, but it’s going to be worth it when the drama kicks in. To add to that: this series also has the best background-art of the entire season. It looks absolutely gorgeous and life-like. The music also is excellent, just like what you’d expect after Les Miserables (the Greek influences really work). Unfortunately, a lot of people will probably not give this series a chance, but you can be sure that I’m going to be blogging it from beginning to end. This definitely is one of the most promising series of the season.

  1. I remember laughing when i saw the saturday schedule, because i realised your blog would probably remain very active on weekends.

really glad shigofumi looks good,it was with gunslinger girl my most anticipated anime of the season,i keep hearing great things about the first episode, especialy “the twist”,can’t wait to watch

hard to look forward to something you’re not sure you’ll be able to watch, and sadly Porfy no Nagai Tabi has been completely ignored by bloggers and fansubers alike.

  2. You might not be able to answer this, but if you can: where did you download Porphy from? I can’t find it on any of the bt sites that I frequent, and if I have to resort to watching it on tv, I’ll constantly forget about it (a sad fact of being super-busy.. -.-;;). Any chance that you can help out, or should I continue searching?

  3. I think Shigofumi will be the only show I will try to follow this season (once fansubs start appearing). I actually even watched the raw, which is exceptional for me. Seems interesting, but I was surprised that it does not seem to be an episodic anime, like Kino Tabi or Mushishi.

I’d like to see Porfy and Les Misérables, but with no fansubs I’m out of luck…

  4. I’m looking forward to Shigofumi. I wonder when the first subs will appear.

All I found on Tokyo Toshokan was a little 4 MB teaser.

I hope it will be at least as good as Shinigami no Ballad.

  5. luckily there’s like 5-6 teams that say they plan to do shigofumi so i’d say at least one will release an episode before next saturday.

  6. I’m glad that you liked Shigofumi…and prsonally, Okouichi Ichiro is one of my favorite script writers.
But be aware cause he also wrote most of the Code Geass’ script…

  7. I’ve finally managed to see it. It a good start, I think it’s going to be a really good anime. I just didn’t understand why Porfy is so interested in cars. Well I know it’s because of his father’s work but I don’t exactly understood what his job consisted of.

  8. Don’t think that the Porfy series will be subbes soon, and I don’t care….it’s got nothing that seems interesting in it anyway

  9. Shigofumi looks really good, but it’s Porphy that I’m most excited about. Unfortunately nobody gives a damn about this kind of shows, so we won’t be seeing subs anytime soon.

  10. I just watched Shigofumi episode 1. Oh man, I know we’ve got a winner here. Not only the plot twist (which was actually surprising), but I also was laughing at the jokes. I hope this anime doesn’t go downhill.

  11. Porfy is one of the best Anime series I have ever seen,in my two plus decades of watching/buying.It SOOOoo has me,that I have signed up for actual Japanese lessons. My second lesson is this Saturday. Its slow going, but well worth it.

Between that and my pack of 454 flash cards
on how to learn Japanese in 90 days, from
RSTI,I’m having a heck of a time with Porfy, but lots of fun as well.

I cant find it past RAW 20 though.I am continously shocked that this incredible series is getting no attention, yet the ‘gundams’ of the anime world, have a million and one subbing groups falling all over each other,to sub rehashed trash, for the umpteenth time, season after season.(I am a gundam fan…)

JUST PISSED THAT REAL ART LIKE THIS GETS THE COLD SHOULDER…

    Its sad really !

I have done lots of encoding, but have no expirience with typesetting/timing,etc.

It ALMOST,almost makes me want to start my own group. All I can do is struggle with RAWS,and hope it gets an R1 license.

  12. Can’t believe that u actually neglected “Romeo’s Blue Skies” when u enjoy WMT’s series so much.if u haven’t heard of this anime then let me tell u once u started watching it u’ll forget all the animes.that’s the power of “Romeo no Aoi Sora”.is to DIE FOR!
