Some quick first impressions: Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto, Death Note, Shounen Onmyouji

Time for supernatural “action” anime. Right now, I’m eagerly awaiting the subs for Red Garden and Jigoku Shoujo. I hope they’ll arrive soon. ^^

A samurai anime featuring supernatural monsters. I’m not sure whether this is going to be a success or not, but there’s one thing I am sure of: the music is awesome. If only because of that, I’m going to continue watching this show. I’m a bit worried about the main character, though. As things stand now, he doesn’t really have a clear, thought-out reason to be fighting monsters and saving children. I hope that this comes in the next episodes. The side-characters sound interesting, though. My level of Japanese couldn’t understand their exact role, but from what I understood, they’re a bunch of theatre-people who involve themselves with catching dangerous criminals.

I’ve found most of the hyped shows to be rather disappointing (see Fate/Stay Night, Tsuyokiss, Kanon, Yoake Mae, etc). Death Note, however, deserves every single hype it’s got! Really, this show is awesome, and I’ve just seen one episode of this. The main character is so incredibly interesting, the soundtrack kicks ass and the theme of this anime has potential for so many interesting events. Seriously, if this quality stays, Death Note will turn out to be awesome.

I’ve been looking forward to this anime. Too bad it turned out to be disappointing. It’s another one of those 13-year-old-going-to-be-the-best-things. Lots of flashy graphics, lots of action scenes, little substance. It’s a pity, as the character designs for the side-characters look appealing. The next episode doesn’t seem to be much better, as our main character’s love interest will be introduced. Oh, have I already mentioned the cute pet who keeps following him?

  1. Death Note is a must-watch. You will be surprised at how much strategy, logic and planning it takes to use the Death Note to its full potential, as the main character Light will soon demonstrate as the story progresses.

  2. what was your opinion of bakumatsu vs. ayakashi ayashi. i know they’re fairly different, yet at the same time, both are samurai running around killing spirits. i thought bakumatsu had the better first episode and feel it will probably be more enjoyable

  3. I’ve yet to see Ayakashi Ayashi. If they’re both samurai who roam around killing spirits, then I indeed doubt whether Ayakashi can deliver something better. While Bakumatsu may not have been perfect, it’s got awesome production values.

Deltazechs: I love strategy and logic in anime, so if things really go like you say they go, I’m really going to enjoy Death Note. I’m also surprised that the creators can keep going for 37 entire episodes.

  4. I like Shounen Onmyouji 🙁 it’s nothing new or creative, but you can’t help but be entertained by the two lead. The script is very nice too. There’s this chemistry that just makes it so natural.

The female lead is annoying but I just skipped scenes whenever I see her face =) anyway, you SHOULD at least finish watching Shounon Onmyouji. For me, it’s amazing. I wish there were more anime like this.
