Re:Creators – 13 The Usual Way, the Way Back

Seeing the previews for this week’s episode, it was obvious that the main narrative was going to be taking a break with a recap episode. The question is if this was worth watching at all. Thankfully, Re:Creators pulls off an above average clip show that actually has some new animation, is aware of the loathed nature of recaps, and pokes fun at itself.

As most recaps show are usually all recycled footage, I was surprised at the amount of new animation like seeing Altair get her ass completely shredded by an alternate sexualized version of Meteora. While that was very entertaining to see, I thought that her alternate personality could still use a bit more spark as her mannerism didn’t match with her new physical appearance. The nonlinear format of showcasing characters breaks up the tired template of reliving though the series in twenty minutes while Meteora trashes-talks them. There is actually some new backstory information like Yuuya’s past as he was part of a special unit before he murdered a whole bunch of people and became the antagonist of his own universe. Finally, the ending scene is completely meta as Meteora breaks the fourth wall to kindly explain the reasons for a recap episode and puts to rest any concerns about its quality. I don’t think this will turn into the shining example of being the best recap episode ever but it still worth a watch if you’re in Re:Creators as does a thing or two to keep things interesting.

  1. It was an episode of Meteor being for lack of a better word, a “troll”. I loved it. Especially where she was talking about Selesia. As you said it might not be the best recap ever, but I think they did a good job (as for the worst, for me that remains Gangsta)

    1. I loved it too. For me, I’ve never seen a better recap episode so I’d love to hear some recommendations of something that beat it. It was pretty entertaining and actually contained a quite a lot of new reveals about the various characters. Also addressed some of the questions I had, especially a burning issue regarding Altair apparently getting exclusive “power updates”.

Wish the new stuff got broken down for future reference. Most interesting was the stuff about Yuuya murdering one of his best friends and his story protagonist’s sister. It seems…”out of character”? For a villain, he’s gone to the rescue of both Selesia and Sota several times. I wonder if it’s got something to do with Hangaku’s “curse”. Will we see effects of this curse on Magane?

Also, damn. Well, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised but Magane is a serial killer. Actually, a school massacre culprit that got away? Wow. I guess there’s just no way back from something like that. 🙁 Man, I’m going to be hearing Magane’s voice every time I visit the in game shop and development facilities in Fate Grand Order. >.<;; I guess I should be thankful I couldn't draw Da Vinci-chan.

…..so why was she summoned again? The apparent pattern is that each of the characters summoned is someone well thought of in the real world, right? Particularly to Setsuna? Or possibly Sota. The both of them? Why Magane? She was apparently the villain in a specific plot arc in a single episode. Plot point to be revealed later, I guess.

  2. From what I understood the summoned characters are all from franchises that Setsuna liked. We are now 80% clear that Sota for all his actions did not have any part in creating Altair. So when in episode 1 she said to Selesia “My master liked your series too” she meant Setsuna.

Thus we are seeing the characters that stood out to Setsuna from the shows she liked. I got to say the girl does sound interesting. Missed your chance Sato, damn (reminds me of my foolish misses in high school).

Megane, does not seem to had been a just one-episode villain. She does have a preeminent part in the advertisement media for the show so I am guessing rec-curing character. That might be her backstory. I am expecting at least one more character from her world. So we will see.

    1. Yeah. As misses go, this one was a doozy. Sota, you baka.:( (Here’s hoping you don’t have any misses this bad in your life. Sorry if i inadvertently touch a sad subject. 🙁 ) Saddest thing is, I think Setsuna would have felt the loneliest about Sota distancing herself from her. Getting bullied is bad. Getting abandoned by the people you like/love. Worse. And yet, I’m a bit confused at why Altair doesn’t come up and kill Sota, if she holds him responsible for Setsuna’s death. Sota certainly thinks he’s responsible. Said so himself to Mamika. And yet, the expression Altair had when she saw Sota wasn’t hatred, right? So what does Altair think of Sota? I mean, seriously, she could easily kill him anytime, even offstage But she completely ignores him when she confronts Selesia and has yet to directly confront him. Talking about him to Setsuna (?) she refers to him as “And yet he is still part of the world that rejected you.” Assuming Altair isn’t just talking to herself, what if Setsuna still exists and Altair is trying to bring her back?

About the new characters that will show up, I’m only guessing but I suspect they all appear in the OP. Charon appears in the OP with Selesia in the forest. A little girl with orange hair is looking up at Rui’s mecha behind Rui. And a blue haired guy is talking to Blitz Talker – his partner and tokyo babylon protagonist? Everybody else seem like background characters. Maybe some of the girls from Mamika’s group of friends might work too but hm…man I wouldn’t be able to read how those girls would fit into the story in any significant way.

Sorry if I’m textwalling again. I don’t have anyone to talk to about this show anywhere else. XD I’m probably going to textwall Aidan’s Apocrypha reviews too. My apologies in advance.

      1. I do not think your overdoing it. Doubly so, since you are not ranting, but actually raising interesting questions. Questions I like. Ranting not so much.

And do not worry. I am at an age were I am old enough to have regrets, and young enough to still have hopes. Seeing Sota miss a great relationship did bring out regrets, but so is life. One needs to take the bad and good.

Now on the show. My theory is that since it seems that only Altair can bring in characters, any characters that will be brought in from now on will be done so strategically. I another name in order to alter the balance of power between her and her adversaries. Charon is obviously an attempt to check Selesia.

Now it does not seem that there something that can be brought from Meteora’s world that can be used to check her, so nothing there.

There is no reasons to bring something from Mamika’s world, except, and this is a big possibility imho, if Aliceteria joins the opposition. Then I expect Altair pulling something like that.

I do think Megane is an issue for Altair, so I think she will bring someone from her world that can check her.

I do not think we will see something from Blitz’s world, except if he also turns on Altair.

Yuuja is checked by Megane, so nothing from there.

We might see someone from Rui’s world in order to check him.

So that is my expectation. Any new arrivals will be brought in with the goal of checking existing characters.

On Altairs goal. I think Setsuna is dead. I think Altair hopes that by breaking the world, she will be able to gain the power to “write” Setsuna back to life. In another name either gain the power to create and cheat death. That is her endgame IMHO. And that is why Blitz is with her. I think Blitz wants to have his daughter back, but not in some made up world. No, he wants her in this world.

All of course is hypothesis. We shall see!

  3. i.e Altair wants to create the world Setsuna wanted. Which I guess includes a Sota in love with her :p

    1. Good to hear. May your hopes there be fulfilled.

Back to the story, that makes sense. Ok, so Sota needs to live for Setsuna’s sake.

I also like the idea of Blitz being a bit desperate to make Altair’s plan work because he thinks his daughter will come back. Well, I am a bit concerned at his eagerness to wipe out his fellow creations, even his allies. Referring to how he wanted to kill Alice the minute he met her. ???? Why? Altair needs opposing factions to clash for chaos to happen and the strands of reality to shake. Probably why she’s keeping the creations alive in the first place. She killed Mamika only out of pain cos she managed to get under her skin and touch a nerve.

Well, my main worry with Altair’s plan is, in my mind, this collision probably means there’s a distinct possibility that all the factions from all the different worlds wind up in the real world. Collision of worlds, right? That was just the image in my head. So they could all wind up overlapping the real world. That means both the good and bad guys from all the worlds show up all at once. The bad guys from the super robot world and two fantasy worlds in particular worry me because they’re either giant monsters or super robots. It’ll be a bit like One Punch Man. Entire cities can be devastated by each skirmish between factions. It will be total chaos and the casualties are likely to be tremendous. No more creators + audience = no more creations. Even Altair may wind up severely weakened or disappearing entirely. Well, she’s kinda half-insane from grief over Setsuna already but Blitz on the other hand. If he’s really trying for a world where his daughter gets to live, does he really put the creators and audience he depends on for their power of imagination in harms way? Hm…maybe they’re not aware of the danger or are confident of stopping the chaos before it gets to that level?

      1. I think neither Altair nor Blitz know fully what will come out of their strategy. I think Blitz is in a wait and see attitude. Remember how he introduced himself to the heroes “as someone who would prefer them not to interfere”. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Altair. So I think he is going along with her plans but keeping an eye out for any indicators of the results of the experiments. This might be due to his character description. He does seem a science type. As for being ruthless, this is also probably part of his character description, and also makes sense if he is really desperate.

We will have to wait and see.
