Wellber no Monogatari ~ Sisters of Wellber Review – 82/100

Ah, Wellber no Monogatari. The show that scared away almost all its viewers in the first episode due to the talking tank. Still, this is another gem from Production IG, although it’s way rougher than series as Seirei no Moribito and Chevalier.

The biggest problem with this series is definitely that the first couple of episodes reek of useless filler, and at first sight, they give away nothing of the incredible increase in quality that would happen afterwards. In the end, though, this is one series that knows what its doing, and the first four episodes were just meant to flesh out the story and most especially: the characters.

And what amazing characters they are. Nearly every main and important side-character gets background and development early on as they push the storyline forwards. They’re really the driving force behind this series, and especially once it hits its second half they really start to shine. This is one series that isn’t afraid to kill off a major character, and the creators know exactly what it takes to give the characters depth

The writers may be very talented, but they’re unfortunately also a bit sloppy. Most of the climaxes border on heart-wrenching, but there are a few that border a bit on cheesy. A few plot twists also are just included to keep the story going. Take for example a princess who is on the run and has to travel undercover, and yet she travels along with a huge unique tank. The aftermath of this series is also way too rushed and just wants to do a few things too many.

Still, Wellber no Monogatari is a very enjoyable series that seriously doesn’t deserve the negligence that it’s currently getting. It’ll keep you entertained with its dynamic characters and storyline, and not to mention that it’s got some pretty impressive production-values. Both the music, but especially the visuals are very pleasing to the senses, so if you can excuse a storytelling error once in a while, then you could give this one a chance.

Wellber no Monogatari ~ Sisters of Wellber – 26

Ah, that’s what I like to see: an excellent climax. The fight against Greedam is well wrapped up, with all the deaths that happened in the previous episode. Obviously, spoilers will follow after this paragraph. Let me just say before I start that the climax was awesome, though I’m afraid that the ending itself left things to be desired.

But first, Loden’s final moments were awesome. He basically sacrificed his own life to save Tina. After all, he was prepared to die anyway, to make up for the things he did all those years ago. What better way to go than to sacrifice yourself for the one whose life you ruined? The king of Wellber and the king of Greedam also settled their fight in a pretty interesting way, with Rita coming as a surprise saviour who actually makes sense. I was also shocked to find out that Tina nearly drowned on her way out of the ship, though thankfully she turned out to be just unconscious.

Well then, at this point, I was really happy with how things worked out. If the series ended like this, I would have been perfectly fine with it. Unfortunately, the aftermath left a lot to be desired. It’s jumbled mess of ideas that just came way too late in way too little time. Okay, I can understand that Tina would leave Rita. But apparently, the creators wanted to get the two of them back together a little too badly. It’s a shame that such a great series had to end un such a low note.

Wellber no Monogatari ~ Sisters of Wellber – 25

Was that an awesome episode or not? It’s really great to see that the characters haven’t lost their sparks at all, and now that the story has set in, it’s really time for them to show how they’ve developed. Seriously, if you’re looking for a good fantasy-adventure, then Wellber no Monogatari is the way to go. It may start out mundane, but it just gets better and better.

And this episode is exactly the reason why I love strategies so much in anime. Strategies like these really allow the writers to play with their characters. Rita and her father end up together, going after the king of Wellber, Tina and Loden end up together, trying to sabotage the ship. Rita and her father quickly get captured, because their guards quickly die, and they find it too risky to keep fighting. In there, Rita gets separated from her father, but gets saved by Galahad, while her father tries to find out why the king of Greedam started acting so strange.

I must say that the reason was a pretty good one. It turns out that the king of Wellber and Greedam were twins, but Wellber’s king was found to be just a bit older, so he had to be the crown-prince. He always was treated better and more importantly, and didn’t even seem to realize how much this hurt the king of Greedam. Then, however, the king of Greedam was assigned to take care of Greedam, which turned out to be living hell at the time. It must have been extremely hard to get all things back together for the guy, and all this time, the king of Wellber, who never had to experience such hardships.

In the end, he turned out to be a spoiled brat. Not in the way that he acts arrogant to everyone, in fact, he is rather kind, but he’s almost too kind, and way too naive. He’s never really been through hell, to try and survive, which is why Loden would have made a good king.

And yes, I said “would” for a reason. The guy’s dead now, trying to protect Tina! It really seals her hatred towards him in an excellent way. And I must say that it has been developed really well. Right till the end, taking revenge was still on Tina’s mind, even though she knew that he was sorry about the things he did. Usually, anime is a tad too forgiving with revenges, and they’re quite often just forgotten (apart, obviously, from Jigoku Shoujo).

And to think that Galahad kicks the bucket in this episode as well! This really signifies that Wellber no Monogatari ~ Sisters of Wellber is about the “sisters” of Wellber, or Rita and Tina. And really, Galahad died like a man, and he never showed a sign of weakness in front of Rita.

Seriously, this is exactly what a final battle should be. All attention should not be directed to just the main characters; every character should play an important role, and it really helps if the side-characters are well-developed as well, like this series has done magnificently. Now all that’s left off is to end this series off nicely. There’s enough material for a decent climax, but the ending itself is always a whole different story.

Wellber no Monogatari ~ Sisters of Wellber – 24

So, this basically was the “oh god we’re under attack and we will be screwed unless we do something RIGHT now”-episode. At the moment, I’m worrying about nearly every series that I’m watching whether or not it’ll be able to pull off a good ending or not, and Wellber no Monogatari has been the first series to remove these doubts. This episode was really good, and I’m pumped to see the finale!

Oh, and by the way: those who were put off by “the tank” will rejoice with this episode: Voljurac dies! Or he gets blown to unrepairable pieces, in any case. This again shows that this series isn’t afraid to kill off its characters, which really makes me wonder whether Loden will survive this series or not. Voljurac’s death wasn’t really extraordinarily sad, but it did serve as the perfect wake-up call for the other characters.

It’s an interesting royal family, by the way. Instead of hiding and retreating, they aim to infiltrate Greedam’s big battleship. Rita’s father does this to find out what the heck happened to the king of Greedom (hinting that we’ll indeed be seeing enough of the guy’s background in the final two episodes of this series), and Rita and Loden are both doing it to protect their kingdom.

I remember how the first season ended rather interestingly. It may not have been the most believable (two people taking down an entire castle), but it was fun nonetheless. That same kind of fun I detected in this episode, so I’ve got my hopes high for this ending.

Wellber no Monogatari ~ Sisters of Wellber – 23

Seriously, was there ANY way for this episode not to turn out awesome? This episode finally shows how Tina tries to get revenge on the guy who killed her parents, and it’s nothing short of amazing! The graphics also shined more than ever as well. There was a bit of a problem when characters started whistling (that’s always been tricky to do), but apart from that, I just loved this episode.

It’s indeed like I thought: Rita’s brother did kill back then, but right now he’s still being haunted by those days, and is extremely sorry of what happened. Tina meanwhile has her obvious problems that she’s trying to kill both a prince and the brother of her best friend. What’s interesting is how at the end of the episode, she does shoot him, but her body simply refuses to aim well. It’s a bit of a pity that she was interrupted by Sherry with the message that Sangatras was about to attack, but then again I guess that the creators still need to use Rita’s brother for the upcoming war that will take place in the final three episodes of this series.

One thing that I do hope for in the final episodes is to get some much-needed background for the bad guys. This episode introduced quite a few new people, and not only that, but the king of Greedam also killed off the king of Sangatras. There are three episodes left, so the final episodes are promising to become totally awesome, but I do hope that the creators will be able to get in the development for these people, like they did so well for every other major character.

Wellber no Monogatari ~ Sisters of Wellber – 22

This episode was mostly unspectacular, and just built up for the finale of this series. Basically, Rita and Tina arrive back at the castle of Wellber and are greeted back by Rita’s family. Galahad formally requests a wedding with Rita, and later he settles an old score with the knight, back from episode one. All in all, the chess-pieces were set right for the final four episodes of this series.

But it does promise to be an awesome finale! In the next episode, we finally get to see the confrontation between Tina and Rita’s brother (because yes: it’s now officially confirmed that he was the one who killed her parents). At this point, I have no idea what she’ll do. Just keep quiet about it in front of Rita? Brainlessly attack the guy? Give subtle hints? Talk things out? It’s all possible.

My guess is then that the final three episodes will deal with the upcoming war between Wellber, Sangatras and Greedam, or to be more precise: preventing it. Here too I wonder what kind of direction the creators will go with. There are still quite a lot of interesting possibilities for the war to turn out in three episodes, but for now they must make sure to build it up well, just like they did with the characters.

Wellber no Monogatari ~ Sisters of Wellber – 21

An intermezzo. Wellber no Monogatari spends this one with the much-needed background story of Voljurac. It’s probably the least interesting episode of the second season so far, but then again, the second season was just that good, and a bit of background for a side-character can only work in the series’ advantage for the final episodes. He now feels more than just a random tank.

Basically, Voljurac breaks down, and he needs to be fixed. The only person that Voljurac knows who can do this thing is the guy who created him, or to be exact: the daughter of the guy who created him. Renaldo Vinci, thirty years ago, met with Voljurac when he was still a human. It indeed seems that in the end, he transferred Voljurac’s spirit into a tank he made, after the guy had been shot lethally. Basically, Renaldo once worked for the Kingdom of Wellber, but once his health deteriorated, he quit, though his superiors didn’t like this. Voljurac was sent to kill him, but the two of them became friendly too much, and Voljurac betrayed his superiors. As a thanks, he got shot to death.

This episode also answers a question that I’ve been having ever since Rita went undercover: are there more machines like him? In short: yes. Renaldo may be dead now, but his daughter hasn’t been standing still, and she’s created quite a company, producing all sorts of interesting machines. It would have been more interesting to see some of these machines actually on the street, but this is just a minor detail.

This makes me wonder… there’s one important character left who still misses background, apart from the obvious Rita’s brother, of course. Will Sherry also get an episode for herself? It would be quite interesting, but on the other hand, there are only five episodes left, and I don’t think that the creators can just waste another episode. Or will we perhaps get a third season? That would be quite interesting…

Wellber no Monogatari ~ Sisters of Wellber – 20

Last week was about the second Shinigami Bee, so like expected, this episode returns back to the love-triangle between Rita, Tina and Galahad. And what an episode it is! Romance can either work in a show’s favour, or completely ruin it, but with Wellber no Monogatari, the result has become excellent.

Basically, Rita and Galahad are now officially a couple. Tina has finally decided to confess to Galahad, only to find out that he loves Rita. Rita meanwhile knew how Tina loved Galahad, so she turned down his confession two episodes ago. Because of this, Galahad feels like he’s breaking up both Rita and Tina, so he decides to leave. It’s a theme that this series has used more often. It’s a nice touch, seeing as you’re not entirely sure whether people will make up, or remain gone (in Jin’s case). In the end though, Tina finally realizes that she’s been standing between both Galahad and Rita, and Rita finally confesses to Galahad.

What’s also interesting is that we’re nowhere near the end of this series. Usually, things like these are saved for the final episodes, but right now, there are still six episodes left for this series, and enough time for the creators do further develop Rita’s and Galahad’s relationship. I think that this episode marked the end of the first half of the second season now, though, and I think that we can expect something entirely different for the second half, now that the love-problems in the main cast have been solved. The upcoming war should take a larger focus, just as Rita’s brother’s role.

Wellber no Monogatari ~ Sisters of Wellber – 19

Haha, I knew it! The resemblance between the two just couldn’t be a coincidence. Major spoiler coming up ahead if you’ve been following the subs. Let me just say that Wellber no Monogatari has become amazing with its second half, and this episode was no exception. This one was fully focused at the plot, as Tina meets the second Shinigami Bee. He isn’t the one who killed Tina’s parents, but he does tell her where she can find the real murderer.

It’s in Wellber, which makes it almost certain that Rita’s brother indeed was once known as the third Shinigami Bee. Now that I mention it, Tina has never seen the guy, has she? I must say that the way that the creators handled this was very good. First they introduce the guy, and after that they keep dropping subtle hints that all point to the fact that Rita’s brother was the murderer. It’s so much better than when they saved the surprise for the last possible moment and went with a sudden revelation (Romeo and Juliet anyone?)

And those disguises! There are basically two rumours about the Shinigami Bee floating around, and Tina and Bergerac go and investigate the first one, while Rita and Galahad go for the second one. The latter two need a disguise for that in order to avoid suspicion, and both of them looked so awesome. Especially the sunglasses and new haircuts did it.

Wellber no Monogatari ~ Sisters of Wellber – 18

So, this was clearly a building-up episode, but that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t an excellent one. I really can’t believe how well the second season has progressed thus far, and I’m loving every minute of it.

This episode was mainly meant to develop the love-triangle between Galahad, Rita and Tina, when Sherry gets sick and the group is forced to make a pause. It’s clear now that both Rita and Tina love Galahad, though Rita is the only one who finds out that Tina too has feelings for the guy. Because of that, when Galahad confesses to her, despite how he’s still lovesick from Jamill, Rita declines.

Meanwhile, in terms of politics this series has also progressed. The king of Greedom has finally created a peace-treaty between the kings of Wellber and Sangatras, but in the meantime, he has plans, along with the king of Sangatras to screw the king of Wellber over behind his back. Guernia may be dead, but his father is still alive. I’m wondering when we’ll see Rita’s brother again. After all, he’s number one on my list of “guys that could have killed Tina’s parents”, and at the same time, he probably won’t like it when he finds out the plans of Greedam and Sangatras.
