DanMachi2 Anime Review – 40/100

“Is it Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon” burst onto the anime scene as something of a B-tier cult classic.  2015 saw Season 1 massively outperform expectations  – ignoring the occasionally shoddy animation – to bring excitement and mostly fan service (and the cosplayer favorite: the Hestia ribbon).  Now, four years later, the much anticipated sequel has concluded.  How did DanMachi2 do?

To answer that question, a word on my grading criteria.  For me, each show has 50 points to earn and 50 points to lose. Points are earned by going above and beyond the norm – showing me something I hadn’t seen or making me feel something unexpected.  Something that makes me applaud.

Points are lost when I feel a component of the show was below average or less than acceptable in terms of animation, storyline, etc.  Something that takes away from the show as a whole.

Let’s take a look!

DanMachi2 – Episodes 9/10 (Berbera/Argonaut)

DanMachi, you’re making this hard.

Overall, this season has been incredibly disjointed…the latest episode (10) is a perfect example of that.  It’s like half the animation team is working on one fight, while the interns get the other (and debatably more important one!)  In the same episode!

DanMachi 2 – 8 [Killing Stone (Ephemeral Dreams)]

Hi everyone. Everybody okay after that episode? I think everyone who watched this week’s DanMachi needs to take a moment and have a circle hug. Just some nice pats on the back, some nice happy thoughts.

Alright, if everyone’s feeling a little better, let’s talk about this episode a bit.

DanMachi2 – 7 [Fox Person (Renard)]

I respect when a show doesn’t treat the viewers as idiots. What that means in practice is not writing out easily contrived situations where someone acts illogically, just as a plot device or to get out of a pinch. This week on DanMachi, I would say everyone acts logically as the episode comes down from the night in the Pleasure Quarter.

DanMachi2 – 6 [City of Lust (Ishtar Familia)]

DanMachi, as an anime, grew up this week. From the show that brought you the cosplaying mechanic of the “Hestia ribbon” comes an episode dealing with largest taboo in hero anime, and in some ways, Japanese conservative culture as a whole. Watching DanMachi this week is like this: you have a friend who you hang out with for laughs, but one day they come up with something profound and life-changing out of nowhere. You remember it, just because of the juxtaposition with their normal personality; it’s jarring.

DanMachi2 – 5 [The Hearthfire Mansion (Home)]

DanMachi, you have me scratching my head. It takes you less than 20 minutes of air time to wrap up a 4 episode built, fortune changing battle – and then you spend the next 20 discussing Hestia’s Homebuilding. And what’s more – it was a very enjoyable Fixer-Upper-At-Your-Enemy’s-Expense episode. Just…a bit puzzling pace. Let’s take a peek (>_>).

DanMachi2 – 03 [Gathering (Conversion)]

Welcome to this week’s Dungeon! We have thickening…plots! Also, Hestia shows up late, Bell gets beat up (and likes it), and Lili wins a high stakes drinking game!

For starters, let the record (and the previous blog post) show that I correctly predicted this episode would see the mechanics behind changing families. But boy was I wrong in how we would see it in action. I figured it would be with prize money from the Apollo family to buy out Lili. The multiple transactions and how they came about caught me off guard.
