And here we have Un-Go’s ending, which I must say pleased me a lot. There are some parts that never got answered, like what really went on in the previous arc, but this was very worthy as a finale itself.
Probably the weakest part was the motivation of the bad guy, which while plausible, also felt a little weak. I personally believe that he also had a grudge against Kaishou’s practices during the war, and that that together, along with coming in the possession of someone as powerful as Bettenou caused him to do it.
This was a great murder mystery though. What made it especially interesting was that Kaishou, despite being innocent in this case, still isn’t entirely clean. He could easily have pulled off something like what he was framed for, and I think that that was what made the previous episodes so believable. The string of revelations at the studio also was great. The pacing again caused the story to come together very nicely.
What’s also interesting is that this episode didn’t have the biggest budget. It was mostly just very good explanation and exposition, with one really big explanation. Suddenly Inga came up from out of nowhere and started chasing Bettenou with some awesome animation. It probably wasn’t even the case of a big budget here, but rather that Bones got themselves one really good animator, and specifically put him on that particular scene. It works perfect to give a bit of an action-packed climax here in an otherwise dialogue-filled ending.
Overall, this season was unique in the way that my three favorite series all somehow ended up airing on the same day: for me Penguin Drum, Hyouge Mono and Un-Go rank as the top of the past three months, and Aikawa Shou did it again. I really like this guy as a scriptwriter and with this, he also shows that he’s great at noitamina series. There still is a prequel OVA left, to which this episode dropped a lot of hints. Looking forward to it!

I can see why it would be a weak motivation, but it fit Hayami perfectly. He’s a bit too simple minded, he doesn’t have any grandiose illusions– he just wants Izumi to recognize him.
This ending was amazing though, I’d love a season two. Although the sales probably aren’t good enough to guarantee that.
I actually love Hayami’s motivation.
Sure it’s weak, but it’s unique. It’s not like one of those over-the-top motives you see in anime when a character commits a crime
this felt like the end of a first story-arc, not a finale. Also, I’d deduced most of Kaishou’s plan from the previous episode, but
1. I was still rooting for Full Circle, as they at least were great providers of lulz.
2. I still don’t get what Bettenou was exactly. Or what Inga is. Sigh, guess there’s that movie coming up.
3. Heh, the guy with the arrows pointing at him from the ED, heh heh.
Overall, anime just felt too short. Watched it in 2 days, first part (standalones + prison eps) felt superior to the Kaishou arc.
The way it ended I almost wonder if they got some advance notice that, say, preorders were suddenly higher than anticipated? I liked the finale but it seemed like a sudden turn to the “let’s do season 2” ending (like with Tiger + Bunny)….at least a man can dream, can’t he?
I liked it but I still want more. The OVA will be a welcome addition to the series! I’m surprised here that they let a main character be the villain, I wasn’t really expecting that. UnGo was a short and sweet series, I probably won’t remember it two years from now but it was quite fun to watch a new episode very friday 🙂

I thought Hayami might be the villain from the moment I saw all those arrows pointing at him in the ED. That, and the fact that he was with Kaishou when they were looking for Bettenou in the first place.
I actually really enjoyed this series. I watched this with Mawaru Penguin, but for some reason, I preferred this one to the latter. With Mawaru, there were too many WTFs and it felt like it was trying way too hard. In contrast, I loved the laidback atmosphere to this anime. Am certainly looking forward to the OVA.
