Toward the Terra – 24

And so it has ended. Like expected, the final episode wasn’t better as the epic episodes 21 and 22, but it still was satisfying enough. Again a bit of predictability was the culprit, though that only was the issue with the main characters. The side-character’s conclusions were excellent. Grand Mother just had to die, no question about that, and to be honest, Jomie’s and Keith’s deaths lacked the impact of Matsuka, Sam, Artella or Blue. It’s clear that their time was over, and that they were ready to give off their role to their juniors. This could have been saved if the production-values or the pacing would have gone all-out, like with El Cazador or Noein, but instead a “normal” pacing is chosen, and this pretty much looks like a normal episode, aside from the extreme details in Jomie’s and Keith’s final moments. What I liked, however, were the elders. Both for the humans and the Myu, and how they sacrificed themselves for the younger generations. Their time has really been over, and they’ve felt out of place with the youngsters for a long time now. They’re the ones who really managed to convey the final message of this anime, which is to think about the next generation, and to sacrifice yourself so that your children can live happily. And how right it is. Seriously, of the shows that arrived in the new spring-season, a huge amount of quality-ones emerged, and Toward the Terra became one of the best of them. In two weeks, we’ll see Gundam 00 taking over the timeslot. It’s definitely got something to do if it wants to live up to the shows that preceded it: Toward the Terra and Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi, two thought-provoking and excellent series. Will it live up to them or will it go down the path of Code Geass? I hope it’s going to be the first!]]>

  1. final episode was really great but in some ways I thought it could have been better.
I loved the plot twist at the beginning about the true nature of the SD plan. That was very shocking

  2. The ending is HARDLY disgraceful. It was well done, but again the show had such highs it was hard to top it all. Overall the whole show as excellent and will remain one of my favorites. Thanks so much for blogging it. I also don’t think Gundam 00 can live up to Terra E… I think Sunrise will go with the proven forumla as usual. They have dvd and figures to sale.

  3. Well thats the final that i waited.
Ese es el final q esperaba.
Thats a great serie, thats a great anime, thats a clasic.

  4. I think the ending is very well done… well, I stopped watching after episode 17 because I want to watch the rest all at one go (which I did, watched 18-24 about 10 hours after I got them downloaded)
I like how the anime ending is not as cruel and sad as the manga ending. I like how Keith managed to bring himself together and NOT shoot Jomy like he did in manga (ARGHHGHGHHH)… I didn’t quite buying that Jomy would get killed by that sword (even though it does seem to have got his spine)… it seems that he simply chose to just fall asleep and let Terra take his life. However, I like the part where he hands over the headgear to Tony. It was pretty sad in the manga that Tony and the other children have to leave, and I really like how he is now in realization and is protecting everyone else. The ending is not a happy ending, but it’s indeed much happier than the manga’s ending. The Mu and Human will help each other out from now… and that should be what we all want to see ^^ Personally, I like the anime much more than manga (even though I did bought them, WITH TAKEMIYA KEIKO’S SIGNATURE and my name on every volume

  5. Oh my god I cried so much I hardly saw the ending… but it was so much better than any other anime conclusion I have seen.

  6. i just finished terra…. omg… man…. dude i havent been that devastated since i saw gungrave. could this be the best anime of 2007??? man… terra is Goddamn mudafucking fenomenal. seriously…. it is why we watch anime.

  7. I finally watched this series, mostly because you kept posting about it. 😉
It was truly epic, in all senses of the word.
The last few episodes had to be watched with a box of tissues at my side. Even the site of the earth at the end made me bawl again. ^^; Sure, sometimes it was cheesy, sometimes it was a little too blunt with its message, but this story has all the elements of an epic myth–no wonder it’s being retold again, all these years later.
Thank you for blogging. I loved this show!

  8. I saw the last episode today. It’s a really great manga, even if it’s not known by many people.
I haven’t read the manga, but the anime ending was also pretty sad. (Unfortunally I only got the last three episodes in french, so some people wondered why I was sitting before my computer crying my eyes out while holding a dictionary.)

  9. LACK IMPACT? Their deaths were greater because we knew them quite personally unlike the Type Blues who…I rarely get speechless, and now I am.
All I can say is I am incredibly glad you rated this 90+, so I encountered the anime. Just amazing. It was tragic – but it didn’t make me cry. I tell you, it is EASY to make it cry for something EPIC at this level.
No, I was SPEECHLESS, stunned. Just…

  10. Yeah well, like Tan Tan, I’m one of the late comers to this damn awesome anime. Wished I had known about this anime earlier, it truly doesn’t get its widespread recognition and love it so deserves!
However, contrary to the reviewer and some of the comments here, I found this last episode to be the MOST stunning of them all. Episode 22- Matsura’s death, well, I thought he had to die somehow. His death didn’t surprise me.
However, killing off Jomy, our main character really surprised me. Up to the very end I was hoping he lived somehow and continued. I didn’t feel at all that his time was over. I found it much more emotional and touching than episodes 21/22.
Overall, despite the differences, I love this anime to bits. I love the main character, Jomy, and of course, I love our psgels, for reviewing this fabulous anime so clueless people like me have a chance of finding such a massive GEM!

  11. In truth I only looked at this series because of the recommendation from this blog and I must say that I am GLAD I picked it up. The series as a whole was truly epic and despite the discrepancies and predictabilities of the final episode I could not see it or really wished that it would in any other way.
A truly emotional series, and that is a hard thing coming from animes these days. I’ll definitely have to put this in the archives.
Thanks for the blog and for putting me on to the series. I look forward to the next.

  12. Thanks for blogging this, without that I would have never watched it. I really liked the final images at the very end of the episode, after the credits. Specifically the image of the cross-shaped weapon (I can’t remember the name) as kind of a ruin in the restored Earth. For me, that made the ending incredible–it gave off a message of hope, but still left things open ended. It showed that Terra was able to revive itself, so from that I can assume that the humans and Mu were able to work things out as well. The story wasn’t tired out with a definite conclusion.
