Steins;Gate – 06

I like this show a lot, but its characters do take turns in annoying me. Last time it was Mayuri, this episode it was Hashida. I never really liked watching anime about anime otaku, and this series unfortunately did not change that. I don’t mind this guy when he’s useful, but this episode didn’t have any role for him, so he just kept making bad sex jokes and kept reminding me why I’m glad that I am not an otaku myself…

In any case, watching this series shows how different a good visual novel adaptation can be from other anime. The big difference is that Visual novels come out all at once, compared to mangas, light novels and anime, who have to sell themselves with their first installment. The result is that this show can take its time in building up. Of course I’m going to rant if it turns out that the creators took too much time for these first episodes, but that’s something for later.

In any case, the previous episode was meant to leak out what Cern has been doing. This was probably meant to leak out what the lead characters have been doing. It perhaps wasn’t the most interesting episode, though I like Shining finger’s quirks for now, especially in combination with Hououin. This show may not have the best chemistry between character of the season (that award is reserved for Tiger & Bunny), nor the most likable eccentric main character (that one goes to Hyouge Mono), but the dialogue remains well written. Now it’s up to the rest of the series to actually make use of it.

The thing that intrigues me the most about this episode was that dream. Was it simple foreshadowing, or more than that?

  1. Trying to decipher what niggerlord cum-master excellent said…

“You are blogging about Anime and claim to not be an Otaku?!”

Well, if thats what you said then let me just say this: Otaku is not exactly the same thing as a Fan.

  2. ^^What was cum-master even talking about?
In any case, this episode really makes me wish that next week could come sooner. I have to admit that I don’t really like Moeka as she seems to be too similar to Nagato from Haruhi but doesn’t have the same pull.
I talk about this a bit in my blog in my Stein’s Gate review

  3. I confess I like most of the jokes here

    “Stop creating a Yuri Field”

LOL and the VA for Okarin is amazing… So over the top, he really captures the insanity of the character

  4. I am almost running out of interest in the show. It’s not a comedy, it’s not that funny.
    What Happened?
It set up to be a very cool mystery at the beginning. This one feels like it is not going to do itself a good deed and tell an interesting story. All the nice time twist are gone and we are left with ….

character development ……..which for me has not been that good. They keep repeating the same old jokes and nothing really new is added.

One more episode will make or break this one for me anyway.

Sorry to sound so down about the show, others may really dig it. I find this pattern in anime happens much too often for my taste. So by the end of 12 episodes I wish I had dropped watching it sooner.

  5. I love when they’re trying to come up with a name for the e-mails. “Back to the mail.” “DeLorean mail.” “The mail that leapt through time.” Mayushii really is an idiot and is probably my least favorite thing about this show. Part of me is thinking that there’s more to her than her ditzy character lets on.
Although I did enjoy the texting instead of talking part when she was right outside the door. If anything, this episode was pretty entertaining. (Oh, and when he sent the banana back and started cackling like a madman.)

  6. I gotta agree with you jzar. What started out as intriguing is turning into something random and boring. This type of show doesn’t do well in the character development area and really needs to keep the story strong to stay interesting.

We’re talking about a guy who watched 1000+ anime series here.

  8. Problem is all the characters in the show are 2-D so far. They haven’t really changed from the moment they were introduced, and the series is taking its time adding one character at a time to the lab. Next episode we might get the part-timer added as a lab member, and the episode after that, the shrine kid. After the whole cast is finally set up, then things will probably heat up… I just wish they had cut some of the fluff and put it in an OVA instead.
