Star Driver – 15

The first episode in which no cybody appears whatsoever. And at the same time it’s also one of the best episodes so far. I mean, how many plot twists did this episode feature on one single character anyway?

This entire episode was dedicated to Mizuno, and only at the end do we get to see the part that the previous episode was building up to: the Crux Brigade making their move. The rest of this episode was all about character development when Mizuno finally realizes that Takuto is into someone else and also where her mother returns home, after abandoning her children years ago. By far the best part of this episode was when she tried to leave the island though: that’s where her character really came together.

And those weren’t even the only plot twists in this episode. First of all it’s finally revealed that Head is indeed the painter R. I mean, there was no way for him NOT to be, but after finally having this confirmed it does have some interesting implications: this episode again hinted at how this guy is supposed to have this huge history. On top of that, he’s actively trying to recruit Sugata again, but this time without using mind control. Sugata meanwhile finally decided to break off his engagement to Wako (if Takuto wins a duel from him, at least). This episode was really hinting at how something is going to happen to both him and Takuto. But yeah, this is Star Driver: whenever it’s trying to hint at something, it’s actually hinting at something completely different.

Oh. And who the hell were those sudden new members of Vanishing Age?
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. Head’s finished painting was signed with an R in the bottom corner. Didn’t Takuto say in episode 1 that a painting with the R marking was made by his father? Someone who would have to be quite older than Head would appear to be?

Have we ever seen Head and the older goatee guy together in the same room? If you notice in this episode they mention how every member of Vanishing Age other than Marino is in the room but goatee guy is mysteriously absent.

Are they one in the same? Perhaps a first stage similar to the school nurse? Or maybe it’s a lot simpler and Head is just copying an artist he admires…

  2. I’m pretty sure the two (not so new) new members of Vanishing Age are the two girls that were on the screen in Kanako’s room. Apparently ones name is Kou Atari (Eureka-colored hair), and the other is Madoka Kei (curly blonde hair).

  3. Mizuno’s time loop = Endless 8 done correctly.

Anyway, Mizuno > Wako. Something is wrong with galacticly gay pretty boy for choosing Wako over her?

  4. Well, finally we’re going somewhere. This whole episode was very well-done, and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen. To be honest I felt that the show has lost its focus in recently, but now it seems it’s back on the right track.

@qwerty: Head and the goatee guy can’t be the same, they have different voices.

  5. oh wow yea in the first episode he takuto definitely said the painting with the girl was painted by his father. Plot twist? haha

  6. And did anyone actually question that Head was the painter? His first name is Reiji, which starts with an R. The mask he wears doesn’t even cover his whole head. There’s no one else who has purple hair in the entire show. I mean, really now.

  7. This episode was one of the best so far, definitely! Mizuno’s time loop was awesome.

I still don’t get why both Mizuno and Marino appear in Mizuno’s memories, but only Mizuno shows up in Marino’s. Is it clear for anyone at this point?

Is Marino Mizuno’s first phase or something? Some kind of self-protection mechanism? If she is, then she might disappear at some point, when Mizuno goes into the next phase.

  8. The three new members look like Kou Atari,Madoka Kei, and Takashi Dai. The first two appeared on Kanako’s TV way back in like ep 3?

  9. does it also count that the chairman of the glittering star brigade or whatever’s name is ryunoske? it was something like that, but his name also starts with a “R”

  10. If the West,South and East Maidens-Mizuno,Wako and Keito can’t leave the island, how did the North maiden Fish girl leave the island?

  11. “how did the North maiden Fish girl leave the island?”

Because she’s no longer a maiden. Sam pierced her squid, as they say.

  12. Anyone notice that Tauburn in the new credits is different from the current one? eg. White collar compared to existing all red; shorter neck compared to current long; different mask design; new red linings all over limbs…..
Wondering if Takuto/Tauburn will upgrade as well. That’ll be cool.

  13. @Fai
the north maiden had her seal/mark pierced or broken you can say in the first episode when she had her cybody destroyed

  14. My favorite episode so far. It really is foreshadowing that Takuto’s gonna lose the next fight. Will it be against the painter… or against Sugata?

Also, the “groundhogg day” reference. Very funny stuff. It picked up a lot since its lowest point (the boxing episode) and it’s finally delivering. Glad I didn’t quit that series.

  15. Definitely one of the strongest episodes of the season. I really liked how scary that Time Loop was and how it prevents people from leaving the island. I’m also curious as to why Waka has to do ‘cleansing’ while none of the other Maidens seemingly don’t. Does that mean each Maiden has her own duty, and Wako’s just happens to be purification?

That said, next episode is the one I have been waiting for quite a while- Takuto’s past. We’ve seen pretty much everyone else’s except his and I’m intrigued as to why he left the island in the first place (and why can he?) Also, while the purple haired guy is R, so he’s Takuto’s father? Interesting.
