Soul Eater – 03

So, this episode concludes the introduction of Soul Eater. We’ve no seen all the three couples, so it’s time for this series to start building up to its real potential, rather than the McGuffin involving the 100 souls to become a death scythe. My guess is that the next few episodes will show the different couples working together on one mission. Something tells me that the banter between these people will reach epic levels when they’re combined.

In any case, this episode is the proper introduction to Death the Kid (really interesting names some of these people have). He’s the son of shinigami himself, so of course you’d expect a perfect student here. When I first saw him, I thought that his weakness was that his weapons weren’t talented, or how he kept arguing with his weapons to the point where he stops caring about his targets, but it turned out to be something much funnier: the guy’s obsessed with symmetry. Now that’s really fitting of the “perfect” student.

If I had to mention a bad point about this series so far, then it’s the CG. Bones is talented in a lot of areas, but CG isn’t one of them, and they’re nowhere near Gonzo’s level at this point. Blassreiter, for example, has some really nice CG, but the shingami castle, the grinning moon and the laughing sun (among others; the different hallways also suffer from this) have lost their freshness by now, and with that the bland CG starts becoming a bit jarring.

  1. The moon is CG? I mean, with the sun I can just about see it, but the moon? Are you sure? In any case, both of them look fine to me.

That castle I hated from the get go, though.

  2. The CG looks fine to me, I don’t know what the problem is. It blends with the art style quite well.

I’m sure if they wanted better CG they could do it, but they didn’t need anything particularly detailed for this anime’s simple art.

  3. and the 3rd couple appeared 😀

anyway i think the cg was good but i think you still have not watched the best anime of gonzo that has cg elements so i would not say they are the best cause from what i see I.G are definitely superior in that aspect and Blassreiter probably is not that popular because they use to much cg and the fans still are not used to seeing it that much or they just don’t want it

  4. Yup the next few episodes should go into a team mission if they’re following the manga and they’ll meet two interesting side characters =p I like the style of this series a lot, CG and all XD;; Just seems refreshing and good, I’ve always loved Bones’ animation because they use bright and fresh colours in their animes (Ouran, even Darker than Black had a really smooth and nice look it it IMHO) And in your post about the alst episode, it’s not that Soul chooses to just change into a scythe all the time, it’s just that Tsubaki (the female ninja weapon) is a special weapon with different forms, while Soul is a standard one-type weapon XD

  5. Gonzo are pretty crappy when it comes to implementation of CG. Mostly because they just go over the top with it, using fully moving robots and crap that just don’t intergrate with the 2D animation.

I think that CGI works best with 2D when you’re using stationary objects. For example, CG vehicles are fine, the Mugann from Gurren-Lagann were good, the buildings from Soul Eater look nice.

Basically, it’s not as drastic to use simple CG items, compared to fully moving Mecha-dragons and humanoid robots.
