Some Quick First Impressions: Fairy Tail, Aoi Bungaku and Table Cat

Fairy Tail

Short Synopsis: Our lead character destroys entire cities and ruin thousands of people’s lives with his powers. And is supposed to be the good guy…
Well, so here we have another one of those shounen fighting series. And to be honest, it feels like a rather half-assed attempt. You can really see that the creators are trying too hard for this one: at every single opportunity they get they try to be funny by an incredibly exaggerated facial expression. Some of those attempts are indeed funny, but in most of the cases they just lack comedic timing, feel lazy or just aren’t funny. The lead character also feels like any other 14-year-old shounen lead out there, without hardly anything that sets him apart. As for the fights, they mostly consist out of people throwing flashy beams and punches at each other until one party goes down. I’ve gotten bored of those ever since Bleach abused them. Right now, I’m a bit done with those shallow shounen series.
OP: Decent J-rock, but nothing special.
ED: Bad j-pop song.
Potential: 20%

Aoi Bungaku

Short Synopsis: Our lead character meets the love of his life as he runs away from the police.
Ah, yes. It’s obvious that this is going to be the least popular series of the season. I suspect that this series mostly going to be ignored, if Mouryou no Hako’s reception last year is any indication. It’s going to surprise me if there are actually subbers going to be interested in this series. Nevertheless, this series has the best character-designs of the new season, it has the best atmosphere of the new season, it has the best graphical direction, the most complex and difficult to understand script, and very much my favourite first episode of the Autumn Season. I love the way how it slowly plays out, with the atmosphere only getting bigger and bigger as it goes on. It’s about adults, rather than a bunch of teenagers, and the fanservice for once feels mature, rather than stupid like most other series this season. I really like the concept of animating six short stories inside one series: it’s going to provide variety, and make sure that the series is never going to drag. If I had to describe this episode, it’d be Kurozuka minus all of the freakish action and plus some actually good characterization. It’s taken a while, but I’m really glad to see another interesting concept from Madhouse!
ED: Nice ballad.
Potential: 90%

Table Cat

Short Synopsis: Our lead characters are a bunch of talking cats and dogs.
Okay… this is the perfect example of “so annoying it becomes funny”. I think that anyone who watched this episode wanted to kill that freaking poodle. Her voice actress just would not shut up. In fact, this entire episode (three minutes, okay) was full of the most hyperactive dialogue since the Excel Saga, combined with some really weird and spastic animation techniques. However, I can’t deny that I laughed. 😛
OP: Very cheesy and pointless for an anime with only three-minute episodes.
ED: Again, just a cheesy song that takes fifteen seconds…
Potential: 20%

  1. Very nice from the raw-cappers to wrongly label their files.

But yeah, I thought something was fishy when a show titled “usarusan”-was about a bunch of cats and a poodle.

  2. Huh? You found something I knew nothing about? WoW!
    Good job.
    Ill check it out.

Ill go back to my index marathon now,
    Thanks.

  3. I’ve read the No Longer Human novel, so I’ve been looking forward to the adaptation. The visual style looks pretty (same character designer as Death Note..!). I just hope it will get subbed sometime.

  4. “It’s going to surprise me if there are actually subbers going to be interested in this series.”

If you take groups who sub the same shows ten times and split them between all underrated series… Anyway, amount of attention to this anime is just depressing. Hope you’ll be bloging it.

  5. Aoi Bungaku is probably the series that I’m most excited to see, since the stories are some that my friend had been talking about a while before I realized they were being made into this anime. Sad that you don’t think there’ll be much subber attention to it, but I could see why you’d think that. I’ll still hope, though! Really, really hope..

  6. Series like Kampfer and Yumeiro Patissiere are being subbed and one of the few shows of this season I was looking forward probably won’t be subbed. Really, I can’t understand people’s taste in anime.

  7. We german fansubbers would love to do the subs to this series and I think, that the problem with MOURYOU NO HAKO was, that this series was so hard to translate. Hopefully this isn’t the same with AOI BUNGAKU! ^_^

  8. I’ve been looking forward to Aoi Bungaku above anything else this season, and was just saying the same thing as Nomus today, that it’s really baffling why there are an excess of subbers for some series, and why they would rather be known as the 15th most popular subber for Haruhi than the 1st most popular for Mouryou no Hako.

Mouryou no Hako was brilliant, and it’s an utter disappointment that the last episode has never been subbed.

  9. I KNEW YOU’RE GONNA LOVE AOI BUNGAKU AS WELL!!!!!!!!

    YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s really so awesome~ I’m happy to see you’re blogging it xD (90% is almost guaranteed, right? =3)

Only Trapeze is left on my most-anticipated-fall-09-anime list~

  10. Mouryou no Hako was incredibly amazing. It certainly is a shame the last episode has yet to be subbed. Key word: Yet.

On the related post, I certainly hope someone will sub Aoi Bungaku. Glad to see you’re enjoying it Psgels!

I hope some fansubber will take mercy upon us, and sub this. Really, besides DtB2, Kimi ni Todeke (though first episode was pretty dissapointing) and maybe Trapenze, this is what I’m most looking forward to.

  11. I hope there’s will be some subbers who will do it someday. It got the character designer from 3 (very) popular shonen manga : Takeshi Obata (Death Note),Kubo Tite (Bleach) and Takeshi Konomi (Tenipuri).

    I thought,with these 3 uber-popular mangakas,this series will gain popularity easily…looks I’m wrong.

  12. mds:
    “I thought,with these 3 uber-popular mangakas,this series will gain popularity easily…looks I’m wrong.”

Seems that way. For Mouryou no Hako Clamp made character designs and Nightmare wrote OP\ED…

  13. Fairy tale seems like a hopeless series. I can see why some of the shounen series are popular (naruto, bleach, one piece) but Fairy Tale seems pretty mediocre in comparison even to those. The world is uninspired, the characters are generic, the story is dull… it seems like a generic “japanese” fantasy. I dont understand why it’s such a popular manga.

  14. aegd: I’d say that if you want to understand why it’s a popular manga, you should read the manga.

Everyone, this is a pretty generic thing to say, but it gets better.

  15. i have read some chapters of Fairy Tail a long time ago and it was quite fun to read. When it comes to the anime i expected it to look at least a bit better and honestly,i hate the voice acting,Natsu is not nearly as funny as i remember him to be…

  16. I didn’t even knew about Aoi Bungaku untill you posted about it.

I will be very glad if you will be blogging it. I will be following this. ^_^b
The main characters past and life really seem, I don’t know word to use actually. Seems like those women did things to him when he was only a kid and then there is something about his family. He must feel very hollow.

It made me sad how both of them went: “Will you die with me?”
Made me immediately think after the episode: “Why must it be: “Will you die with me?”,why can’t it be: “Will you live with me?”. They could still die together if they both lived long enough to old age…
I know they are both trapped, empty, sorrowfull and so. Still it made me think it.

Well, just have to keep watching and see where this is going. I get the feeling this will go into lot of despair.
Wish I could read the novels, or where the stories were originally adapted from?

I really like the feel, direction and the look of this show. Overall it’s going to be more than great when it continues like this. 🙂

  17. I’ve just watched the first episode of Fairy Tail and… well, I’ve had really mixed feelings about it. There were some ideas that I found interesting, but on the other hand, most of the jokes weren’t funny to me. I felt like I’d already seen all of them in One Piece, only done 100 times better. And yeah, it’s noticable, that Fairy Tail is heavily One Piece-inspired, but I think it’d be better if it tried to be more original, since I’m sure that any attempts at copying One Piece are bound to fail miserably anyway. After all, One Piece is one of a kind 😉
Maybe it’s too soon to judge only after one episode. It’s not that unusual for first episodes to be slightly generic and not that interesting. The first episode of One Piece probably wasn’t all that special either… although, while watching it, I had this strong feeling that I’d end up loving the series (which indeed happened, even sooner than I thought), whereas while watching the first episode of Fairy Tail, I felt nothing of this sort, so…
Anyway, it’s not like Fairy Tail doesn’t have some kind of potential… and it can really go in any direction from now, so I’m not going to give up on it just yet… But I agree that there wouldn’t be much sense in you blogging it.

And I wish some subbers would pick up Aoi Bungaku soon, ’cause your review really got me interested…

  18. omg,, i was expecting AOI BUNGAKU! and for some reason.. i don’t know why isn’t someone picking it up..maybe it does hard to sub, well, let’s challenge them then! lol..just kidding.. but i hope there’s gonna sub it though..or if there’s not, let SCRUNCHYLOL chub it! >_
