Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso
Short Synopsis: Our lead character plays/played the piano very well.
Impressions: We get shows like this every few seasons. You know, the ones that are generic to the core, yet they do the generic shit pretty well? See, this episode was very formulaic: we have our genius with a troubled past, our main character’s best friend, childhood friend, and the mysterious new girl who our protagonist will most likely end up banging. I could compare this to Bokura wa Minna Kawaiisou from Spring’s lineup, but that wouldn’t do this show very much justice-because unlike Kawaii Complex’s premier, this first episode wasn’t a total piece of shit. In fact, it was consistently solid, and A-1 Pictures seems to have done their best with the crappy premise handed to them. If the story and characters weren’t so much of a damn cop-out though, I could see myself enjoying this anime for what it is: a teenage angst drama. This is the first time Kyohei Ishiguro is directing a show by himself (Unlike Psycho Pass, My Little Monster, Amagami SS+, Hourou Musuko, Kyokai Senjo no Horizon, & Fairy Tail, where he was an episode director), so I guess I have to congratulate him for making this episode decent at the very least. However, if I learned anything from the past few years, it’s that generic shows like this quickly fall apart.
OP: Generic, nothing to see here.
ED: Generic, nothing to see here.
Potential: 40%
Man, your writing style is annoying and low level “banging”, “crappy”, “piece of shit”, what are you, a teenager? You’re trying too hard to be edgy
I miss psgel already
agreed
Agreed
Disagreed. We’re not in the Victorian era here, both in terms of word economy and censorship (thankfully).
Can’t say the premise for the series interests me and considering that I did like Kawaii’s first episode, not sure if it’s my cup of tea. I’ll keep my eye on it to see if it’s a sleeper though.
And what are you? 10?
Grow the fuck up, people do swear and people do use crude words, psgels like him enough to give him a spot so just accept it and move on.
As for the post itself, completely agree with you, except on the Kawaii Complex comparison, and the reason were the characters, at least half the cast wasn’t made of teenagers, boy, teenagers piss me off, casts full of them just make shows unbearable for me these days.
Oh yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed Kawaiisou’s manga as well as the second half of the anime. I merely docked Kawaiisou for it’s first episode.
Well I think I’ll be going else where for my reviews from now on if this is the level of writing this site has been reduced to. Needless swearing, rather than saying things like “ending up together”, or “falling in love with each other” no that would be to much effort and instead go with “banging”. Are you in high school? You barely talk about the show at all in this “review” and what you do say about this show is that the entire episode is generic and follows a formula, which is fine, but then you don’t expand on that at all except for the brief mentioning of the characters in show. Nothing about the shows setting, nothing about the themes of the show, where the show might be heading other than the two characters banging it up.
Psgels even if you write one post a week, I would gladly take that over a thousand posts a day by these so called writers.
Hey Ramp, I’m sorry if you’re not a fan of us new writers. I understand that psgels has a unique review style that’s hard to replicate. That’s why I’ve been a fan of his reviews for so long and that’s why I wanted to write for this site. He really is a talented, dedicated guy but unfortunately, he is very busy with things other than anime. That’s why he wanted some new writers to help him out by filling out the content of this blog a little. But even if you don’t like the new reviews, psgels will still be writing and publishing his first impressions and reviews on this site. You can see his most recent post here: http://psgels.net/2014/10/09/some-quick-first-impressions-akatsuki-no-yona-and-donten-ni-warau/
I don’t think you need to replicate his style exactly. Everyone has different tastes and we’ll eventually learn what a review from you means. However, you do need to put a little bit more effort into making your reviews more informative. Tell us about the character development, the themes, the story, the acting, the animation quality, the soundtrack, etc. For example, you told us that this first episode was generic but decently executed. What was good about the execution?
Finally, a constructive comment-much appreciated. I can do reviews, but I’m rather inexperienced in writing first impressions. I said quick first impressions, but I suppose it was too quick for your tastes. I’ll that into account.
I think the length is fine, but the focus could be better. Writing concisely and precisely while avoiding being vague in both criticism and praise.
If the show sucks, say it sucks and move on. Kudos to the author of the article.
That way people like me can get a sense of which shows to watch.
Pretty much this. Give a show the respect it deserves. If it deserves no respect then give it none.
Well, StarCrossed is done for me. At least with psgels we knew his anime tastes, his tendancies. Now with this kind of quick impressions, we’re at the deepest basics ever.
Out of the 20+ new shows i’ve watched this season, it’s easily on my top 5. But whatever.
On a constructive note, maybe each new blogger should post a presentation, at least we could discern more accurately their anime background? Myanimelist maybe?
You don’t know our anime tastes yet? Well, all you have to do is stick around and you’ll get to know them. As for my favorite anime, if you look on top of each post to the “posted by” header, you’ll see the link to that author’s bio. It has my background and a top ten anime list.
You don’t seem to like the genre, so why bother posting a first impression?
This was easily one of the strongest first episode of the season. It was wonderfully executed. It was a rock solid first episode. I can imagine anyone who liked shows like nodame cantabile, hachimitsu to clover, Anohana or toradora, will be loving this show.
It’s speaks about the knowledge & appreciation you have of the genre, when you so casually throw the show away without even noticing all of it’s good qualities and all the potential it has.
Random Curiosity posted a first impression that’s worth reading.

Eh. After Honey and Clover all other shows of this type are dull.
Also, high school students. Gaaaah. Need more shows about college students.
So basically you disagree with the post, because of that you’re done with the site and the writer sucks.
Wow.
I lol’d at your first sentence man. You’re probably right about the direction of this, it looked rather formu-lame-ic to me.
In fact if not the word “banging” I would continue to think the author is Psgels :D. You need a lot of patience to watch generic stuff like that every season… every year.
