Random Anime Recommendations

Hey guys, I’m currently experimenting with a new format, inspired by the podcast I did together with Deadlights, Scammp and Juno. It inspired me to do a bit more with podcasts, but instead short ones. I’ve always had the idea of writing some kind of recommendation post: I mean I’ve written a lot of reviews at this point, but for most people looking for new stuff to watch it can be very intimidating to search through everything, so in these podcasts, instead of discussing the new shows I thought it’d be an interesting experiment to just recommend some older series that I’ve watched.

What I did, is that I’ve created some random generator of all the series that I’ve seen. After deleting some obvious sequels that list totals 964 series, movies and OVAs together. For each series I get, I’ll give reasons why it is recommended, or why it’s not to be recommended. I have no idea what series will come out of it, so it’s going to be completely improvised. Yes, I like to torture myself sometimes.

Also, I apologize for my accent. I’m Dutch, but even then I know it’s terrible. ^^;

These are the series that came out of the random generator this time, in order:

– Akira
– Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu
– Melody of Oblivion
– Love Hina
– Dororon Enma-kun Meerameera
– Kowarekake no Orgol
– She and her Cat

Also, apologies for ending so abruptly. I screwed around while cleaning up and accidentally removed the last few sentences. And feel free to discuss the series that I’ve mentioned. 🙂

  1. Hahaha nice Accent 😛
    Obviously Dutch
But is it just me… or is the video kinda quiet?
I set my volume higher but then I heard more static…

I quess I’m going to look into “Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu”
    Thanks for the random recommendations!

  2. Long time lurker here, the accent surprised me haha but its nothing to be worried about. Was interesting to listen to, keep it up.

  3. You have the perfect voice for this XD. Didn’t mention this before but I love your accent. I wouldn’t have imagined it to be dutch though.

Hey, Legend of Legendary Heroes is top tier! Ha ha, well it might not be the best of quality but it’s definitely one of my favorites. Well worth the time in my opinion.

As for Youtube, I’ll recommend you 2 things.
1)Descriptions should be quite descriptive and full of keywords. The youtube search engine cares more about descrpitions than tags, though I’m not sure how much this has changed in recent years.

2)Creativity will go a long way. Good anime recommendations are actually an unfilled nitch, with extremely few places on the internet giving good ones. And most poeple blurt out lists without structure by genre, types, and stuff. So, well, there is potential there.

Anyways, I think it’s cool that you are willing to try new things. I’ll try to learn from you and get off my lazy bum more often XP

  4. I’m finding the same thing with the volume as quirx is, then again my computer may have poor sound output.
You have a lovely voice actually.
Akira, now that takes me back, was far too young for that when I watched it, the violence was an issue I recall but I’d reckon a rewatch would land me somewhere around your views on it.
Densetsu:Your review of this got me to give it a second look after initially disliking the show, I’m glad I did because despite really wanting that second season I liked the blend/balance of action/comedy/politics here.
Oblivion: This one, especially the ending were like a trainwreck, not exactly a good show but the bizzareness of me for better or worse had me engrossed.
Love hina:Watched/read this back in the day where I was less comfortable with female fanservice, may deserve a revisit someday.
Enma-Not usually one for Go Nagai but I died laughing at this.
Orgol:…I actually found this a very cute short we some feeling involved at the end.
I think you are doing very well so far with this as well as with deadlights podcast. Your a lot more confident and clear sounding than you may think, I can recall you saying once you were a bit shy in terms of your personality.
Never saw she and her cat, will give that some thought.

        1. I fundamentally declare that kyoani hire psgels to voice the cast of free! =P
Heh about the girlfriend thing, these things have away of just happening and coming your way, it helps to seek out but sometimes it just occurs and you get lucky.

          1. Yeah, in these terms I have unfortunately been very unlucky I guess. It can be quite frustrating sometimes, unfortunately.

  5. Yesssss. Please keep this up!

I will agree that the sound quality could use some improvement. But other than that I really enjoyed it.

  6. Enma-kun is actually a 1973 series, not 1980s. The reboot is actually based on the manga (although not every part of it as you mentioned, it takes the enbi-chan character from a one-shot). The original anime was more suspenseful and way less ecchi.

Also, this year is Enma-kun/Cutey Honey’s 40th anniversary. Last year was Devilman/Mazinger 40th anniversary, also by Go Nagai.

  7. Oh man, very much agree on the lack of conclusion for Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu. I was so desperate I went and hunted down the light novels on amazonjp

I’ve been reading reviews on your site for a while, and I like this new idea you’re trying out here. My only comment is that I had a hard time getting it loud enough to hear.

  8. It was actually quite funny to actually hear you speak for once after reading your blog for quite some years now already XD (Cute accent :3 )

I would advise you though to maybe take a look at a program like Audacity to remove the noise and maybe raising the volume a bit, too.

Also, timestamps for when which anime is talked about would be really great! ^^

Aside from that, great idea and I’m looking forward to the next… uhm… 192 episodes of this! xD

  9. I am one of the lurkers for years and only came out my shell a few times, but this is awesome. No problem with your accent — in fact, it’s pretty cute — and love the idea. Seriously, I don’t care much about genre, so love to hear the recommendations from you…learning about why you liked a certain show or didn’t like it. You should so totally keep it up.

Akira — agree with you…highly recommend this one. While it was produced more than 20 years ago, this movie is better than many more recent movies in terms of quality and enjoyment.

Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu — it isn’t the best show, and the ending does hurt the overall enjoyment, but I like this show and got myself hooked.

She and her Cat — this is absolutely a wonderful and charming little story, and Shinkai’s unique ways of looking at things around us starts showing.

I haven’t watched the others but will give them a try.

  10. Like everyone says Psgels, you’re a great reviewer and you’ve a got a pretty awesome voice! 🙂

How often are you planning to do your Random Anime Recommendations and the Seasonal Anime Podcast? I really enjoyed them both and I’m excited to hear the next ones!

  11. Crazy how you can remember all these anime series and directors so well.

Another great thing about Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu is you get to hear Lelouche’s maniac laugh again. Really enjoyed the first half but the ending was indeed a let down.

    1. Starss y’know what the worst part of it is! Zexcs trolled us by doing Itsuka tenma (also by the densetsu author) and even did a cross over ova! The fiends.
Not saying Itsuka tenma was bad, just really middling.

  12. Great accent, great idea.

I sometimes feel that the era of greatness of Japanese animation is past us, and that oldies are more interesting. I feel that for American TV series too, with a few exceptions.

  13. I hope you do change the title of your youtube video. I wouldnt want to go through 138 videos all titled “random anime recommendations”

      1. It should be enough to just put Psgels in the title? Maybe add a date? Just don’t acronym your blog name in the title. I found it pretty funny in the aniblog tourney but SCAB is far from flattering.

      2. something to distinguish it at least. maybe a number or a date. or try not to make it completely random and get seven series within a genre or theme so you could place the theme in the title as well.

  14. Don’t worry about your accent, nothing wrong with it. You’re obviously fluent (fluency doesn’t mean sounding “native-like” mind you, some people seem to have this silly idea. English doesn’t belong to any one nation in particular… but this is off-topic, yeah XD) and easy to listen to. Also, I started to watch Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu thanks to you. I like this new recommendation format you’re experimenting with, keep it up! ^_^

  15. Forgive me but, the first time I heard your voice, my thot is like…..
did you just came back from Ente Isla….. :P? (Hataraku maou-sama)

  16. Thanks for posting this! It’s nice to hear what you sound like! Always enjoyed reading your articles and opinions, so this is a great addition. Your english is really great and quite suitable for audio/video reviews.

Also sorry for my ignorance, but this is the first time I’ve heard a Dutch accent so it sounds pretty awesome to me. XD

  17. She and Her Cat… Hnnng, so much feels. Shinkai’s narration is a joy to the ears and soul. And that unexpected interception of the female character… “Someone, someone please save me.” PERFECT.

I would love to see your myanimelist, btw. Because I’ve been looking for a series on-par with NGE, Dennou Coil, GITS, Kino no Tabi, and Honey&Clover. So far, I’ve been failing big time.

      1. and Natsume Yuujinchou and NANA which I always recommend with Nodame. He’s on MAL, just search psgels 🙂

  18. I really like the idea of your branching out into another avenue for your anime reviews. If you ever want to change things up with the randomly generated rec videos, it might be fun to hear some episodes based around your favorites list(s), specific studios or creators, or even certain genres. (I’m sure you would do well with any of those options since you do seem to know a lot of random trivia about some of these anime, their studios/creators, and their history.)

Of course, I’m probably jumping the gun with suggestions since you probably haven’t decided if making podcast/video reviews will be an ongoing endeavor of yours. At any rate, I look forward to hearing more in the future!

  19. She and Her Cat: hunted this one down and it is indeed a charming little short, but very disappointed the duration is barely 5 minutes. It’s a short I’d love to see as full length ova episode. While I’m dreaming, also have the woman’s story told in the second half and collected with the Otona Joshi Time ovas. (Kawamo wo Suberu Kaze + the three new ones)
