How could you screw up this badly, Rikuo? Shinako just got finished telling you to be more assertive in episode 7, and now you bail at the first sign of hesitation after she’s invited you up to her apartment? I know you’re both awkward as hell, but all the situation called for was a reminder of her earlier request. Just teasingly say, “You’re the one who said I ought to be pushy,” give her a smile, and you’re probably golden. Even if you can’t manage that kind of line, at least generate some conversation as she’s leading you upstairs. For Pete’s sake, do *anything* other than what you did at the start of this episode!
Tower of God – 8 [Khun’s Strategy]
Hello all and welcome to another week of Tower of God! Apologies for the wait, been a busy few days, but not near as busy as our leads. As this week we see Team A’s test, Khun lay plans within plans, and Quant get publicly humiliated. So without further ado, lets jump in!
Starting off, the visuals. I always bring it up in some form or another, positively or negatively, so this shouldn’t surprise you. This week however I felt Tower of God was rather… lacking. The art style is still great, I love the inconsistent line work and bright colors. It still looks like nothing else really airing this season, what little is left. But as far as the animation goes? For what was seemingly an action packed episode, so much of it just felt flat and weightless. From Quant movements to the struggles of the Regulars, nothing really “wowed” me. There were some decent effects, like Quant after images, but the animation behind his movements did little to sell it sadly. About the only cut that I really liked was mid way through, at Khun’s “fall”. Beyond that though? Well, lets just hope they are saving their efforts for next week.
Princess Tutu – 17/18 – Throwback Thursday
2 more episodes, and 8 more to go for Princess Tutu! This week on Throwback Thursday Princess Tutu returns to form in the most unexpected of ways. Meanwhile Rue and Mytho get some much needed conflict and my OTP takes another step forward. So lets jump right into it!
Starting off we have episode 17, Crime and Punishment. It’s been a long time since I started an episode so poorly, and loved it so much by the end. You see, at the beginning, I couldn’t stand Femio. Everything from his VA to his over the top nature felt out of place and fit Princess Tutu poorly. You need look no further than his interpretive dance, a perfect representation of my problems with modern at, for proof. Yet by the end of this very same dance, his place in the episode and the story became clear. Effectively lamp-shading both Kraehe and Mytho and the current state of their characters. I thought this episode was effectively going to be filler, to be honest. Yet like Princess Tutu is wont to do, by the end Femio fit in perfectly. So without further ado, lets talk specifics.

Arte – 07 [The Venetian Noble]
Apologies for the slight delay in posting this week’s episode review. I have been busy preparing for my end-terms (yup, the world’s in a freaking pandemic but we still gotta give exams!) so, taking time out to write reviews has proven to be a bit difficult. I hope you’ll excuse some other possible delays in the coming weeks. Though, I’ll try my best to adhere to schedule.
Anywho, this week on Arte, the soon-to-be-full-time-working-and-money-making artisan, things get shaken up a little with the introduction of two new characters: the sweet-talking Yuri Falier and Leo-san’s old friend(!), Ruthanna. How does Arte deal with their arrival? Let’s talk about it.

Yesterday wo Utatte – 04-07
Yesterday wo Utatte is my favorite spring anime, so please don’t take my delay in covering it as a sign of disinterest. It’s one of only two shows that I watch on the day it releases (the other being Kaguya-sama). Its ability to introduce new characters and immediately dimensionalize them is exceptional, as it demonstrated in two of these four episodes. It also has a keen sense of where to aim its lens each week, using individual spotlights or telling stories in parallel to get the most from its cast of characters. Yesterday wo Utatte deserves better than this post (and this author), but here we are, a month behind due to self-quarantine blues, and I’ve got to publish something or I’ll never escape this rut. If you’re digging this show as much as I am, hit the jump for abbreviated thoughts on episodes 4-7, in that order (no lazy list post this time).
[Manga Musings on Mondays] Voices in the Dark – Review

Created by: Junji Ito
Chapters: 7
Greetings, fellow manga fans. As is norm, every new week, a new monday rolls around and as has now become tradition, a new manga review comes along with it! This week, we talk about Junji Ito’s short story collection Voices in the Dark. Is it genuinely scary or overhyped like some of the creator’s other works? Read on to find out!
THE PREMISE:
Seven horror short-stories filled with plenty of nightmare fuel.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT:
For anyone even remotely read in popular manga, the name Junji Ito needs no introduction. Even if you may not have read his works, you surely must be familiar with the notorious reputation he’s amassed over his illustrious career. His works have become iconic pieces of Japanese manga which are deemed impossible to translate to screen and that’s why, any attempts to do so up until now have expectedly, been failures. Hence, it’s become common belief that there’s nothing quite like reading a Junji Ito manga. That’s why, a couple of years ago, when I started reading Gyo, I was all braced up to descend into the dark world of sleep-depriving atrocities.

State of the Season – Spring 2020

Amun: Welcome to this lost spring of anime 2020. I hope everyone is staying safe and watching this B-team of a season. While we didn’t get the heavy hitters of Yahari Season 3 or Re:Zero, there are still some bright spots – Kaguya-sama S2 and the surprise newcomer isekai: Hamefura. Despite my early criticisms, Tower of God has gained some traction – fellow writers seem fairly positive on Yesterday wo Utatte. So this season isn’t a complete wash! We have turtles, villainesses, crows, books, and zodiac animals! Join us humble Star Crossed writers as we take a look at the good, the bad, and the funny of Spring 2020 anime. (But seriously, Hamefura is really good, go watch it).
What show are you enjoying that you’re not reviewing?
Amun: I’m liking Tower of God quite a bit. Feels like every episode fleshes out the world, develops the characters, and pulls you deeper into the tower. Animation is hit or miss, but the story’s moving along nicely now. Little concerned about character creep, but that’s a minor gripe.
Mario: I’m going with Yesterday wo Utatte. Sure, there are other two shows that are equally impressive (Kaguya-sama 2 and the other one down the list), but Yesterday wo Utatte keeps surprising me every week. 4-way star-crossed romance isn’t normally my thing, but so far the show hasn’t put any wrong step, and the characterization for the main cast is off the chart. There’s a lot of details put into their mannerism, figure of speech and their movements. Hopefully the main relationship doesn’t get too convoluted for the sake of drama.
Lenlo: I’m not actually watching much this season. The only non-cancelled seasonal I still keep up with is Kaguya, and BNA I suppose, but I haven’t been enjoying that. Regardless, it is a decent enough rom-com, and I hope that we will actually get to the point where they make some actual progress in a relationship. Rom-coms are only good if you actually include the romance.
Armitage: I love grounded character dramas more than any other genre in anime. Though, such shows have gotten ever so rare these days. That’s why, to see Yesterday wo Utatte do what it does week-in, week-out gives me hope that more such series can be produced down the line. It’s a mature show which cares for its characters and that, in turn, instills a sense of sincerity to the story it’s telling. More importantly, even if it doesn’t stick the landing by the end of its 18-episode run, it might end up paving the way for the adaptations of the many other stellar seinen manga just begging for an anime.
Wooper: Kakushigoto. The show’s absurd flavor of comedy is nicely balanced by its familial themes, and that combination makes it a pleasant weekly watch. Its sixth episode is what really sold me on the series, though, telling one connected story instead of splitting itself into chapters, and really getting to the heart of Goto’s relationship with his work. I’d say it’s the show that has improved the most since its premiere.
Kaguya-sama S2 – 05-06
What’s this? I’ve fallen behind on Kaguya-sama again? Well then, I guess it’s time for another chapter ranking post (this time with seven entries instead of six). Behold the fruits of my procrastination!
Tower of God – 7 [Lunch and Tag]
This was a wild week for Tower of God. From cut content to changed scenes to crazy pacing, we are moving quick. So without further ado let’s jump in and talk Shinsu, Jahad and Best Girls!
Starting off, the pacing. Jesus Christ the pacing. I said from the beginning that the narrative would be tough if they tried for the whole first season. 78 chapters in 13 episodes is a ridiculous pace, and it looks like Tower of God is trying to meet that. As this week we burn through the position classes, cut entire magic system explanations and condense/change character moments. I’m sure many of the anime-only readers are noticing it to. After all, do we know what a Lighthouse is yet, or how it works beyond being a position? What about the floating cubes, why they use needles instead of swords or the entirety of Shinsu? I would be really interested to get an anime-only perspective on this. Because for me, at this point, I don’t see how you could be anything other than confused. At least they explained the Princesses well.
Princess Tutu – 15/16 – Throwback Thursday
Another week, another double feature of Princess Tutu! This week see’s the Raven start to make some moves, Fakir get ostracized and Mytho struggle internally. Does any of it work? Lets dive in and find out!
To start, these two episodes are perhaps the most disappointed I have been in Princess Tutu since we started. Everything about these two, or arguably 4, episodes were rough. The pacing is off, the content is either to rushed or to slow, and its rather repetitive. No doubt this is all tied back into how this 2nd season was originally aired. Rather than 13 full length episodes, it aired as 26 half-length episodes, and were cut up accordingly. This meant though that each half length episode required its own beginning, middle and end. So when you stitch the half length episodes together, you get this weird mess where it starts and ends twice. Compared to the mostly phenomenal pacing of the first cour, it’s a complete let down. I can only hope that Princess Tutu finds its dancing legs again soon, or else this 2nd cour will fall short.
