Odd Taxi – 07/08 [Trick or Treat/Bless You]

Sorry everyone – I’ve been travelling (and can’t sleep in a face covering on a 9 hour flight T_T). Worse than that, I failed to acquire an Odokawa shirt (I found out there are “good” and “bad” Aloha shirts…I guess Odokawa has “bad” ones that apparently people get insulted if you ask them for).

I haven’t even seen the latest episode as I struggle to catch up, but let’s talk about the previous two!

Episode 7 (Trick or Treat) had a lot of setup, but also felt refreshingly self aware. I know I yelled a bit at the tease of the closet. Yano feels a bit contrived as a character so far…which is a shame, because all of the other characters (yes, that includes Kakihana) have real depth. Yano just rhymes all his words and rides around on a scooter to be “different”.  Not my favorite.

Odokawa’s drawings are the best part of this episode.  Looks just like my whiteboarding.

The big confrontation caught me by surprise – it didn’t occur to me that people would dress up like Dobu, since it obviously wasn’t Dobu…but the rest of the world didn’t know that. Nice bit of writing there – to not get sucked into the “what-the-audience-knows” trap.

This episode, and the next, delve a bit deeper into what’s happening in Odokawa’s head – seeing people/animal auras. Can’t say that I terribly care about the mechanism, I’m more interested in the story. I feel like there’s going to be some psychological explanation, but who cares, honestly. Just say it’s for art/furry’s sake! I did think that the psychological tests were really clever – plus I died at the kink shaming.

Episode 8 started getting a bit spicier. Kakihana buying the ring made me sad though – that was too far, feels bad. The most important bit here is fleshing out of Yano’s plan.  I….think it’s alright.  It feels a bit too tidy (and destroys my idea of Dobu being an undercover cop), but I guess it’s okay.  At least it doesn’t feel as random as the introduction of the Dodo killer.  I guess I’m a little worried that everything’s going to be nice and tidy, with every possible person someone we’ve met before.

Being honest, these weren’t my favorite episodes.  There was a bit too much backstory, forced plot development, bad rapping, and punching monkeys for my tastes.  Still, there’s plenty of clever left in this show and I’m invested, so we’ll be seeing this through.  I swear, that closet better be opened soon, though.  Now to watch the next episode before next week!

  1. I like Yano. He was so unexpected and kinda refreshing. Also I do not mind seeing the backstory of the twins. They are part of the cast so it be wrong to just ignore them until the last minute. I am curious about the length of the show? Does it have 12 episodes or 13?

  2. With the reveal that they found a corpse (which is most likely the missing person) I feel more and more that they are fucking with us and the thing in Odakawa’s closet might indeed just be a normal cat (in which way the OP would have spoiled it from the very start).

Btw. I only found out about this now, but the wikia contains transcriptions and translations for the audio drama episodes. They shed some light on the characters (Shibagaki is my favorite) and might hint a few things, and also explain what’s up with the Giraffe guy and the mysterious red pen that can be spotted throughout the series:

Even more ominous even is the web novel here:
