Nurarihyon no Mago – Sennen Makyou – 24

Bah, the creators couldn’t go through with it. In this episode, Nue is defeated… and retreats, along with the other evil youkai around him. It’s a shame: this would have been a great point to just close off this series.

But this also settles it: for me, this series has ended right now. The thing is: Abe no Seimei retreated in order to recover. This will take about 1 year. So yeah, we’re going to do the bloody cycle all over again, and train for a full year to get stronger in order to be able to fight him again. I do not have patience for that. Even if there will be a third season, I’m not going to watch this. This is just right for a conclusion, I don’t want to watch this drag out any longer. This shows that even with a director who really fits this series, there’s only so much you can do with this kind of source material.

And besides, this episode was really good apart from the retreat. With this, this show at least left a good taste behind, rather than what happened last year. The fight against Nue was the action packed climax I had been expected, and Rikuo came with a very good way to defeat him: just use the power of all of his comrades at the same time. Things got even better in the second half, in which a dream sequence reunited all three generations of the Nura-clan. That kind of closure, I can live with.

Also was this really Studio Deen? I mean, the animation throughout this entire episode was really good here. The camera angles were just excellent, the use of colours was really good, and especially the sparring match between the three Nura-commanders was quite nicely animated.

After this though, I really do hope that Studio Deen will get back to what they were good at. They once were the studio that might be bad at animating, but made up for it by picking up a lot of shoujo and seinen, daring and original premises and deliver a lot of bold and new storytelling ideas. The last show that had that was Giant Killing, and even that show came after a long drought. Nurarihyon no Mago was nice, but it wasn’t why I became a fan of them. It’s such a shame to see talent go wasted like this, especially after how Gonzo is showing that you CAN crawl back up from these depths.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. The first sentence is really grong, Nue was never defeated, Also his no suffer any damage for any of Rikuo attacks, I really thing a lot of people dont understand what really happen here. And i thing was wonderfully animated to dont´ understand. The thing is, and he say in the chapter is that his body is no fully prepared to live in the real world, a lucky deux ex, but is clear that the nura clan lose this figth, Abe was summoned, also his servant´s now are whit him (in the inferno meanwhile), and now they have nearly a year to prepare the final confrontation the things are not very good for the good guys here.

I was expecting, waiting for the psgels comment, Is a shame. I fell a very superficial analisys.

Studio Denn make a excelent work here.

Also. I dont know to much English. Exccus my selft.

  2. I agree with above. Seimei wasn’t ‘defeated’ he just wasn’t prepared to escape fully from hell yet, his body began to fall apart in this world.

The hundred Tales arc that occurs after this one is pretty solid and enjoyable imo so I have a feeling the anime will be continued at some point.

  3. Well, the thing is not just shounen series that got dragged out, many shoujo&light novels also the same, especially if those tittles are the ones that selling well, like skip beat, alice, etc. You should try reading mangas sometimes psgels, then you’ll see for yourself that many were dragged on their story. The reason is simple, so long is still selling well, then why not prolong/milk it anyway.
Speaking of this ep. at least deen did a good job here, but I doubt they’re going to rapidly go back in making excellence&masterpice series like they used to be with simoun, marimite, giant killing, higurashi, etc cuz admit it some of those not selling quite well for them, but I also wish they can go back to those times before just like gonzo is now, cuz tho I’m female but so far none of their bishies series are enjoyable for me, most of them like hakuoki, starry sky, etc are mediocre, dull & totally boring.

  4. @hikari: In case of WSJ, they usually don’t even like a thought of ending a Manga before it has reached 400 or 500 chapters (unless they are canceling it of course…).

    1. Aah…I see, yeah I know that every magazine/publisher has their own rule anyway. Btw, 400 0r 500 chps is equal to how many vol? 20-30? Cuz, as far as I remember Rurouni Kenshin is very popular at that time but they(Nobuhiro sensei)ended it at 28vol&they never try to milk it anyway, well they can if they wanted to, so are other titles like Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya(if I remember the last arc after hades is being canceled by shueisha for whatever reasons), Eyeshield 21, Hikaru no Go, Death Note, etc. Thx for the info anyway.

      1. They did try to milk Death Note. We got the Near and… that other guy. Bakuman Manga even shows how authors would have rather ended the Manga early than do that.
