My Hero Academia – 81/82 [School Festival/Prepping for School Festival is the Most Fun]

We’re back with our heroes, and we have class 1A trying to act normal, Eri progression, All Might’s Lesson, and….Gentle. Oh boy. Let’s go!

First off, I think I have gravely misunderstood the Overhaul arc. As it happened, I was a little confused as to where this side-story and character creep was going. Sure, the League of Villains was tangentially involved, but the whole arc felt a bit out of place: a story of pro-heroes in a high school setting. Seeing the visit to Eri, I realize that I’ve been set up: the entire arc was an introduction and MHA is about to unload a whole lot of FEELS on us. Which, I am on board with – when Eri pulled her face trying to smile, I….was unexpectedly not good with that.  Not even a little bit.

The entire Eri visit is….man, honestly unexpected. I thought they would stash her in a coma for a future arc, but nope, we’re doing this. This episode was another first for me: I have never been more willing to climb into my screen and offer assistance as I am for the inevitable break-Eri-out-of-the-hospital plan. Like, I’ll distract a guard, drive the car, sit in the local Japanese jail, no problem – we’re breaking her out if it comes to that, no questions asked.

Class 1A’s culutral festival decision seemed nicely normal, considering the other events. I like how Jiro is getting center stage here – we haven’t seen as much of her. I’m getting the feeling the other members of 1A are going to get fleshed a bit more as this season goes on.  Also, side note, her song was amazing – I don’t normally go for songs in anime, but that was fire.

Bakugo is always right for the wrong reason.  I wonder if there’s a term for that – so wrong, you’re right.  Any ideas?  If not, whenever that happens from now on, I’m calling it a “Bakugo”

Finally, who else is hyped for the harem part of this dance?

Now, the villain we’ve all (well, really Lenlo) have been waiting for: Gentle. We have…a refined gentleman looking fellow, who is literally a villain Youtuber.

LITERALLY.

I’ll admit, this is a first for me – I don’t think I’ve ever seen a villainfluencer in any other media. MHA, you got me on this one. Also, I’m absolutely dying at the windswept tea on the rooftop – anyone who has been on a high rise roof knows EXACTLY what’s going on that other shows (looking at you Fire Force) completely ignore.  The cops watching the video are all of us – I’m not sure if Gentle is actually serious or just messing about.  Either way, he’s hilarious.  He’s definitely going to break into the cultural festival…and be ridiculous.

I guess I have to wrap this post up somehow, but really I’m just having a good time with MHA right now.  Oh yeah, All Might helped Midoriya with a bit of a combo attack or something- that’s sure to be important later, but it just feels like busywork honestly.  The real stories here are Gentle and Eri – with some background music of Jiro and crew.  No doubt this will be a memorable festival, regardless of the outcome!

  1. MY BOY GEEEEEEEEEEEEENTLE IS HERE!

Seriously, I love this guy. One of my favorite characters in the series, and we are gonna start finding out why quick. The guy is just a lovable goofball who takes everything so seriously, yet is presented in such a silly manner. Meanwhile his actual place in the universe, story wise, is 100% serious and the implications/things he represents in hero society are incredibly poignant.

As Horikoshi’s in-universe representation of the Silver Age of American comics, the guy also fits his role perfectly. This is the era when Superman shot Rainbows, DC gave us Plastic Man and Lex Luthor stole 40 pies. It was an incredibly silly time that is wholly unique, and Gentle has just the right amount of silly and serious to nail that. Even down to the femme-fatale in La Brava (who I should mention is 21 by the way, and Gentle is… early 30’s about).

So yeah, I fuckin love the guy, and Kouichi Yamadera’s voice is just pure sex.
