Level E – 03

That. Was amazing. Seriously, this show completely blows 95% of all comedies completely out of the water. These past three episodes have been absolutely fantastic.

I was really wondering how the creators were planning to top the first two episodes. Somehow, they did, with one heck of an awesome anti-climax. To think that a show would start with an introductory arc that was pretty much one big joke, I just love the guts that this series has. All of the build-up and the bloody drama of the previous episodes was rendered completely useless. In the last episode I noted how this series really knows how to plan ahead. I didn’t think it would be to such an extent, though.

I also remember noting how, before the twist, some of the aliens were acting a bit weird, and how the Diskonians were getting a bit too one-sided when their attack begun. To think that they were all acting this. Even the prince’s outrageous behavior now totally make sense when you think that throughout the entire airtime of these first three episodes, he pretty much was nothing but being one giant troll.

What also made this such an amazing episode was the characters who were on the receiving side of the prank. You could really see that that prince completely got on the nerves of his three subordinates and it was completely awesome to see that one bodyguard’s eyes twinkle at the prospect of getting to kick the prince in order to attempt to restore his memory.

The time-skip of three months is also getting interesting (I also like how the main character actually got a tan from practicing outside so much). After this the main storyline should probably start. With this kind of series, it can really be anything. Level E has been by far my favourite show this season, and to think that this only was the introduction. Seriously, it’s been a long while since I’ve seen a show that had SUCH a good start: there have been plenty of series with excellent first episodes, but the ones who can keep this up for three whole episodes are really rare.
Rating: **** (Fantastic)

  1. *can’t stop laughing*
Dammit, my stomach already hurts but I just can’t stop…. XDDD
    Awesome episode, really!
And the fact that Captain Kraft has the same voice actor as Jade Curtis from Tales of the Abyss doesn’t really help either! (for those who don’t know him, Jade is also in charge of a prince that likes to tease people. Although in a MUCH lighter way… but thinking how the always cool Jade would snap the way as Kraft does only makes it all the more hilarious!)

  2. I think no one could have seen this coming… After seeing the whole prank, I thought “Gosick, this is how its done”… Its funny how a comedy show beats a mystery show at their own game

I actually didnt find this episode as funny as the first two, it was more of a wow factor than anything… But everything is in place now, and its set to be one of those animes where it will be fun watching the characters do whatever because they are just great

  3. I loved this episode so much, this show only increases in quality and amazingness, which is in itself amazing considering how very few anime shows can do that. Hopefully there won’t be a disappointing swerve or fall down the way. 😀

  4. I am so on board with this title as well. Should have known they’d throw us another curve after the first episode’s “true form” cliffhanger came to fruition as nothing more than a joke. Wonder if they’ll keep pulling our legs or if there is an actual plot… part of the fun of watching it is to find out!

I picked up on the 3 month tan as well but also enjoyed how the casual relationship between Yukitaka & Miho is evolving. Thumbs up on the preview for episode 4 as well… keeping us completely in the dark as to where this series is going.

  5. I love that they’re sticking to the manga exactly – I was wondering how they were planning on animating Baka-Ouji’s secret diary, and they did it really well.

Also, the video game that Miho is playing? It’s a funny self-reference of what’s coming. It’s great that this series will be even better when re-watched.

  6. This episode was absolutely hilarious. I was laughing nonstop all through Prince’s video record. Its gonna be a loooonng wait till next week..

  7. i was crying, for many reasons x,D i swear i haven’t been this excited for the next episode of an anime for a while. This is just so good!

  8. For someone like myself who watches very few shounen anime. This is episode was just off the charts halarious!

The first part was all suspense until they revealed that everthing from the first 2 episode was all a big prank by the Prince, an excellent twist. It made me go, OMG, that is soo cool and halarious at the same time.

Episode 2, in my opinion felt awsome than fantastic but this episode really deserves the fantastic rating 😉

  9. Not as funny as the previous episode but awesome nonetheless. Epic troll is epic troll. XD

Prince Baka is my favorite character of the season. Hehehe.

  10. I actually was disappointed at the first two episodes. Togashi Yoshihiro is a genius as a mangaka and has the most original ideas and utterly brilliant mixed sense of both dark humor and creativity. Thus I expected this anime to be as original as the manga, in its own way. But the first two episodes did was the most conservative way, simply copied from the book. It still worked and was attractive to its first-time viewer who never read the manga before. But it worked because of the manga and Togashi Yoshihiro, not the animation itself. But I am glad to see in this episode the creators of the anime were willing to challenge themselves and tried to interpret the story in its own visual imaging way. (not as successful and unpredictable comparing to the manga, btw ^^;) But still, they tried. And I am happy with that. From what is showed in the preview, it seems the creators would like to take their challenge a little further. So I am excited for the first time, to see the next episode of this show coming.

  11. What made me laugh the most was how the aliens had ‘fixed up’ the hole in the wall. Its the little details like this that make this a seriously awesome anime.

  12. Funny and unpredictable so far, I really like it. At the same time I have this premonition that the series won’t be able to keep this up. I can’t really substantiate this, but it probably results from the fact that so many comedies initially enjoyed quickly started to feel repetitive. I really hope this time will be different. Keep it up, level-E!

  13. lol i only have one warning for u -> u’ll be disappointed if u thought the main storyline will start from now. Y u ask? =D because the prince is the real protagonist and not Yukitaka. Anyways I’m in the mood for predictions so here goes. In the next few episodes you will realize you have been utterly deceived but you’ll be enlightened to realize you really don’t have to read too deep into a comedy. However, your view on this anime will continue to be challenged in the latter episodes and you’ll begin to appreciate yoshihiro togashi’s ability to create amazing stories when he feels like it. But shockingly you will find yourself in a state of both awe and disgust at its reinvention of cliches; to the point where you want to criticize it but be somewhat satisfied at the way it’s presented. Yet you won’t be able to bring yourself to say either of those things but instead praise it for originality =D Just kidding that’s just how i would feel if the anime followed the footsteps of the manga =). So far, 1 chapter per episode isn’t so bad, though the pacing is getting little bit erratic since it had to convert all the written things in the diary into visuals.

  14. Of the five or six arcs in Level E, I honestly like this first one the most. The others are a bit bland in comparison, although they are still worth reading and will likely be worth watching.

  15. I’d appreciate no one speaks about the manga and how the direction may go in the future.
Let us see how it unfolds not knowing how many arcs or who is the protagonist.
The RollingCamels are hot headed, and if anyone tries to spoil the show any tiny bit, We’ll Crush THEM!! j/k abot the crushing part.

  16. Agree totally blown away so far this season by Level E, also following “Freezing” but..this show is building up to be a combination of total brains, absolute comedic timing and “above the diagonal” in a good kinda of way.

Hopefully, it lives up to the brilliant start. 🙂 I think I will go check out the manga now 🙂
