Les Miserables – Shoujo Cosette – 52

What an awesome way to end such an awesome series! Even though there was nothing of Thenardiére and Azelma, we get something that’s even better: the death of Jean Valjean. I didn’t believe that this series would be able to make me cry after the revolution ended, and thankfully I was so wrong about this. Jean’s end was incredibly well-done, and is it me or did the graphics look better than ever in this episode?

This episode starts with a time-skip of what I’d guess are a few months. Gavroche and his two brothers are settled into their school, and especially Gavroche is making a lot of progression. Cosette and Marius have just moved out, into Courfeyrac’s old apartment. It’s at that point where they get a letter from Jean, and with that they finally manage to find him back.

The guy has indeed wilted away, and has become sick in the months that he was away from Cosette. It also seems that he stopped using fake names, and he’s known to the people as just “Jean Valjean”. He also stopped hiding the chandeliers from everyone, and he actually grew a small beard. When Cosette and Marius meet him, he finally has the courage to tell Cosette about his own life, and of the times he served in jail (it was awesome to see Jean in his twenties, by the way). After he finishes telling, it seems that he’s finally content enough to stop caring about his own life, and dies.

In the aftermath, we see Javert again as well, when he comes to give a quick visit to Jean’s grave. The anime ends with a few flashbacks and shots of the different characters passing out food and clothes to the poor, and the final scene goes three or four years into the future, where Marius and Cosette along with their daughter, a very reminiscent scene for the first episode when Cosette had her final moments with her mother.

To close off, I would like to thank Irene, angedemystere, Tania, Dookers and R for keeping the comments coming. Out of all the shows I’ve been blogging, Les Miserables has had the most discussion going on in the comments, and it was a lot of fun to read them for every week. I’m not sure if you’re going to watch Porfy’s Long Journey as well, but I’m definitely going to follow it. 🙂

  1. I’ve just watched this one and you’re so right, this one is just wonderful !!! Valjean’s death is so moving ! And Cosette saw her mother for one more time , this moment is great too! Well perfect ending for a perfect serie ! Just one thing : they didn’t conclude for Thenardiére and Azelma but maybe it’s better cause we could always imagine some conclusion for them. Azelma will, from now on , live with her mother, that’s what explained in the 51th. Then, maybe, Gavroche one day would come to announce them Eponine’s dead and Azelma would cry a lot , her mother too. But then she’d find happiness and marry someone too , Gavroche would be at the wedding.
Well, thank you very very much psgels for this wonderful blog and for your comments. And I will definitely follow Porfy’s Long Journey even if I don’t know when exactly it’s going to be aired. I think it’s going to be a good one too.

  2. *gasp* I was SO hoping that Javert would visit Valjean’s grave at some point. Now my life is complete. Well, not really, cuz then I’d just die like poor Jean. 😉 While the ending of Les Miz in book-form is sad per say, Valjean’s death is, in its own way, a triumph, a transendence from pain and suffering. So it ends more like a heroic drama than a tragedy.

I THOUGHT that girl might be Cosette and Marius’ daughter. I wonder what her name is.

Anyway, thank you for blogging this series, otherwise I would have absolutely no idea about it. You have rendered us a great service. I hope this will gain more recognition in the Les Miz community as well as the anime community. This series’ uniqueness in terms of not being your typical anime is what makes it so special. I just hope it’s subbed and possibly dubbed soon. It’d be kinda cool if they did some sort of marathon thing or whatever with this on channels like Cartoon Network in the U.S. Well, ciao!

  3. Echoing angedemystere here – I’m very happy Javert ended up visiting Valjean’s grave in the end. xD All in all, I think this episode wrapped everything up quite well.

And thank you for blogging about Shoujo Cosette despite the lack of subs! It’s been great following your thoughts; reading the comments of someone who isn’t familiar with the source material has been very refreshing indeed. 😀

  4. You can find foreign subs for the first few episodes, I think. There are some non-torrent sites that have some episodes, too.

  5. There are the Korean subs. They’re all up to date (to 52). I can translate them… but there are so many… x.x

  6. Wow, Valjean was kinda hot when he was young . . . not that I didn’t think he was adorable when he was older. 🙂

Man, I wish I knew what Javert said at Valjean’s grave. I thought it was so cool he got the last word there. Woot!

  7. DIALOGUE SPOILER

Javert: Jean Valjean… the man who’d led such a rough life… Life and death is by nature, just as night comes when the sun sets.

That is what he said. Rather figurative.

  8. I bet that’s based off what was written on Valjean’s gravestone in the book. He actually requested that his name NOT be put on it, so someone ended up writing that inscription. It’s never made clear who wrote it, but I think having Javert say it is extremely appropriate.

    Thank you, Kim!

  9. Is that really what he said? xD I can’t help but be reminded of Sythar’s “The Graveyard.”

    Thanks, Kim!
