3D life has taken its toll on Amun, but we’re back with our favorite amputee and spooky company!
First of all, Saki. I haven’t seen a supporting character this good since Kilua’s introduction in HxH. I think introducing her at this point is brilliant, since we’ve become a bit accustomed to Kotoko’s peculiarities. Also, having a normal professional at this point is refreshing, given that the recent cast consisted of a giant snake and a human shaped yokai poison capsule. Plus, Saki seems capable, level-headed, hot…all the things Kotoko is not (shots fired).
I guess I should address Steel-Lady-No-Face-Idol. This arc of face smashed idol is neutral so far to me. I think it’s a serviceable backdrop, but I get the feeling it’s going to be pushed more front and center (most literature surrounding this show features the faceless idol). As long as this avoids getting into a treatise of idol culture criticism, I’m happy with it. As with many supernatural shows, I get the feeling that the Steel Lady is being forced by the will of the masses or some other nefarious actor…which is an overdone storyline to say the least. Let’s stick with Saki and Kotoko here.
Finally, Kotoko is truthfully bae. From her hilariously random statements to strangers to her blatant manipulation of her spirit underlings, Kotoko has to be one of my favorite protagonists in recent memory. Even the wandering story to the serpent – quite a reversal of the Eve narrative – makes her truly a unique character. I’m tired of flat (no offense) female leads – In/Spectre’s use of Kuro for that overpowered-but-boring role feels a better fit. I think the contrast with Saki going forward is what will make this show really shine.
Okay, but serious Saki is bae too, let’s be honest.
