That would have been the perfect ending here. That was how this episode SHOULD have ended. I mean, the creators wouldn’t be crazy enough to actually try and revive Ciel, right? They’re not going to do something as stupid as negating the entire ending of the first season. They couldn’t, right?
So yeah, we got trolled here; big time. Dear god, reviving is one thing, but get this: in his last moments, Alois forged a contract with Johanna that turns Ciel into a demon. Because he is a demon now, he can’t die, yet his contract with Sebastian is still running, even though there is no way for Sebastian to absorb Ciel’s soul. So yeah, Ciel and Sebastian will actually be able to live together FOR ALL ETERNITY. Bloody Nora, they actually went there. This series actually was entirely meant to realize the wish of the squealing yaoi fangirls to have those two together until doomsday.
I’m a bit bewildered by all of this, especially on how I’m going to write the review for this series. I mean, was this episode bad? It was perfectly told if you ignore the things it tried to tell: everything took its time to let all of the revelations play out, the second half of the episode was well produced in how the creators portrayed Ciel saying goodbye to everyone. I have no problems with that.
Now, whether or not the big twist is bad, here’s the thing: I have seen a ton of bad endings at this point, and this episode really looked like none of them. Usually, the endings that disappoint me are either the ones who lack ambition (as in, they resolve things fine but the way they do it does no justice to the build-up that it has gotten), ones that fail to resolve anything (it really depends on the rest of the series and how those delivered whether I dislike or accept those) or ones that are just too rushed.
This episode was neither. The creators knew exactly what they wanted to do (dammit!), they knew exactly which revelation they wanted to save for when, and they knew exactly how to plan everything out, not just in this episode, but throughout the entire series. I mean, how often did this series troll anyway? It feels like it trolled both the fans of Ciel and Sebastian as well as the fans of the new approach, twice or even more.
I’m really going to have to sort out my thoughts for a bit for the review of this series.

Hmm, I honestly expected you to like this episode. Maybe I saw a certain tragedy in it that you did not see, or maybe I’m blinded somehow.
But that was a bad end no matter how you look at it and no matter how you toss and turn it, it was no happy and for Ciel and Sebastian at all.
The real Ciel died, just like the card said. He left his emotions and everything behind and is now a demon and Sebastian can’t even put an end to this because of the contract.
Ciel also left behind all of the characters in a much more cruel fashion than what happened at the end of season 1. He even said to the servants that he did not care for any of them anymore. If they had fulfilled the wish of the fangirls I think they would have chosen a way to let Ciel live and Sebastian be bound for him again (like wishing for an alternate world and just returning to manga continuity).
Well, just wanted to say this, because I’m honestly a bit surprised at how you understood the ending. But of course nobody can be forced to like something…and hey maybe I’m wrong here ^^°

Ciel died. Y.Y and it’s freaking sad.
The difference between Ciel and Alois, well, at least one of the many differences, is that Alois discovered that Sebastian had nothing to do with his brother’s death and that both Sebastian and Ciel had nothing to do with anything, but that was never important to him. He was just cruel and selfish. He didn’t allow the other to have whatever they want, their lives/deaths as they planned, their dinner… nothing. And maybe that’s just what Claude saw… an impure soul… while Ciel’s soul would do anything whith those who were in his way, but if they were not to blame, they would let live in peace…
And you can see Ciel is sad when talking to Alois. He knows his destiny and he just want to see Sebastian’s face and reaction.. That’s his only motivation after his real death there… and when he sees.. he’s just a demons who saddens Sebastian. You can see Sebastian’s sad face when Ciels talks about burning the house and memories been worthless.
It would definetly be perfect if Sebastian had his dinner after all.
Gosh… So much fighting and cooking Ciel to… the end… be their perfect food frozen forever…
Well as you can see I’m really a fan of happy endings. But if I follow the idea of “making a pact with the devil always goes bad for one’s side” it’s a moral lesson…
…but screw that.. I wanted Ciel’s soul inside Sebastian!!! grrr…
That’s what I’m on the edge about a bit. The more I think about it, the more I indeed end up liking the twist, but what got me was that the creators ended up finding some kind of way to have Ciel and Sebastian together. That’s about the only reason why I’m negative about this episode.
Still, you have a very good point, yeah. In fact, the more I think about it, the more I like this episode and how it didn’t pull that reset ending.
Okay, I thought as much.
Maybe it was because I was dreading a ‘reset and return to manga continuity’-ending more than a ‘Ciel and Sebastian together’-ending. Maybe that’s why it was easier for me to like the ending.
In the end the pairing of Ciel/Sebastian is as much as set in stone by now, so I can live with that. At least their not happy with each other, dancing through the mansion and returning to the happy filler life we saw in episode 2 of this season.
But I can understand your reason for that first impression a lot better now. I was just a bit surprised when I first read it. And thank you for replying, it’s always nice to see comments being taken seriously.

Did not see that one coming and if you think like Sebastian that ending is bad. I mean, he spent all that time to get the soul perfect only for someone else to eat it; he took his time reviving Ciel only for the soul to be incomplete; after a whole load of battles Ciel’s soul is finally ready but now Sebastian can’t have it.
Seriously! If it was me i would be screaming for someone to return my wasted time. If he’s bound to Ciel forever does that mean he can’t even look for another soul?
I want them (Ciel/Sebastian) to be alive!
If it’s so then both Ciel and Sebastian can eat souls. What is more Ciel can make contracts with human.
As for Sebastian..pure daemon! he lost his “perfect dinner” ^_^ )) However I think that it’s some kind of revenge. Maybe I’m too cruel but imho it’s all Sebastian’s fault.. he lost Ciel’s soul in the 1 season, he made a f**n’ secret contract with Claude, he lied to Ciel, he didn’t save Ciel from the “soul exchange”!!
I actually really liked this ending. Like some people above have said, it seemed like the worst of both worlds. To me it seemed that Sebastian was really frustrated that not only can he never eat Ciel’s soul but now he’s contracted into eternal servitude. Plus now Ceil’s revenge is fulfilled all he’s left with is an aimless existence for all eternity. Yeah, Hannah trolled them good. ^^
In my impression, even though you could say that this episode is aimed for the yaoi fangirls, I kind of disagree. It is pretty disappointing for yaoi fangirls because in the very end Sebastian states that he is now cursed for eternity. Which shows his unhappiness in having to serve/to be with Ciel for the rest of his…well, for eternity. And I don’t think that is a comment a fangirl would squeal at lol.
i like the twist in this final episode. at first it seems like a ‘fangirls ending’ where Sebastian and Ciel live ‘happily ever after’. but it is a lose-lose situation. Sebastian is stuck as Ciel’s butler for eternity, while Ciel has to live aimlessly as a demon.
I agree with the others who lean to the tragic side. This was a no-winners twist. In fact, it was an all-losers twist. Not even a draw. I liked it a lot.
Ceil actually got what he wanted in the first season (once he remembered it in the second season). I kept expecting a happier ending, that Ceil would outsmart them all — which would give Sebastian hope in getting the soul he wanted. I am glad the anime went the other direction. It is tragic, which should always be the case when making a deal with the Devil (demon, or whatever you want to call it).
But in this way the Devil tricked himself. Sebastian *hoped* to kill Ceil before he arose as a Demon, however, he failed. I’m not sure if Sebastian knew about his “last order as a butler” — perhaps that’s what he was trying to prevent. But in the end, he’s now in eternal servitude. It was hard to tell by the tone of his matter-of-fact voice if he was okay with that, or not.
I have to say I loved how this ended. Seeing Sebastian getting trolled (hardcore at that) for once, was probably the most refreshing thing of both the Kuroshituji seasons.
I’m happy for Alois pulling off something shrewd and dying off on a positive note. Despite being a brat, you could at least sympathize with his from the gutter past, unlike the trust-fund baby that is Ciel.
I think this was truly a fitting ending. The series played well to the fans – I think this series did what it aimed to do, keep the fans mesmerized, put in a couple of WTF episodes in the beginning to whet out our appetites, and then start the ride at full speed. At the end of it all, Sebastian was portrayed perfectly. He is a demon, his aim is to consume Ciel, and kudos to the makers to blur the line in their relationship: was he helping Ciel due to a genuine growing fondness for the boy? Was Ciel in any way fond of his butler? The reality is that Sebastian, in his Machiavellian way is only dead set in achieving his goal: to obtain Ciels soul at any cost – “I only know the taste of a human soul”. Thank goodness the creators didn’t humanize Sebastian; to take pity, or spare Ciel his fate. One does pity the demon at the end however, (he looked pretty pissed during the whole episode)- cursed to eternal servitude
Just out of curiosity. What happens to Sebastian if Ciel dies? like let’s say he’s been killed also by a demon sword?
damn… i’ve been reading review for the last episode like crazy and is still haven’t come to an concluding as to whether i like it or not @___@ i dont like how they made ciel into a demon. i dont know WHY exactly, but the thought of ciel as a demon and living forever… looks wrong in my mind. i think he should have ided and sebastian should have taken his soul. DAMNNN.. WHY DID CLUADE HAVE TO INTERFERE !!?!?!?!? AHHHHHH…

I agree, this is a good ending.
Also I think the writers were very smart in playing out the whole “once you lost something, you can’t get it back” theory, which is Ciel’s belief. Sebastian lost Ciel’s soul, he tries to get it back throughout the course of the second season, but even after he did, Ciel’s soul is different, and there’s no way Sebastian can have the original soul of Ciel because he can’t take a second revenge on the angel who is already dead. This is just my thought, I don’t know if they actually intended it to be that way or not.
I fucking hated the ending! I wanted sebastian to kill ciel but no ciel had to go and become a fuckig demon. now he’s going to have to live forever with that little bitch! poor sebastian i feel so bad for him and i’m a fucking yaoi fangirl who loves pairings like those two but i wanted ciel to die so bad i nearly cried when he didn’t.

I feel that the ending was fine not to mention terribly funny for me. I loved the fact that the twist was so drastic and I enjoy the idea of Sebastian forever being in Ciel’s servitude. I felt that he is a demon and he somewhat deserved it. Though, I also think that they could have left off with the first season and been done with it. I’m glad they didn’t though, because I wouldn’t have been dying from laughter at Sebastian’s predicament. Then again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
Ugh hated this entire second series and the awful ending was just the icing on the cake.
What was the purpose of the reapers in this season? Griel’s mildly annoying antics were intolerable here. Sebastian and Claude’s behavior read like a jealous catfight; not sexy. And neither Ciel nor Alois were likeable characters. The only character I found myself mildly routing for was Sebastian. I wanted him to kill Ciel so bad. Then for him to be bound to Ciel’s bratty ass for all eternity; awful any way you slice it. And what was with all the contract, rulebreaking nonsense going on here? Why build up this contract and order business to such a great degree only to have the demons regularly break it? If that’s the case then how is Sebastian suddenly bound for all time to this asshole kid? Ultimately Sebastian fulfilled his end of the bargain. He should get to kill ciel.

It’s just a way of saying “daemon’s contracts are tricky” .. don’t do one…
And the worst part is that Ciel wanted Sebastian to have his soul so bad!!!
