Kurenai OVA

Well… yeah. As it turns out, this is aimed entirely at the fans of the manga. None of the things that made the anime so memorable return, and instead we’re stuck with an episode of random hi-jinks and fanservice. Blegh.

In the end, this OVA turned out to consist out of three random, unrelated stories. In the first, everyone is at a pool in which some sort of terrorist fails with a very flimsy plan. The second story is entirely focused on a broken laptop and the third forces the characters to go exercising. It’s all way too forced, especially that third part, and all of the dialogue feels incredibly shallow and pointless.

I love the way how the original series really tried to improve on the manga and made it much more mature, especially with its excellent voice acting. But yeah, with this OVA that actually tries to be faithful to the manga… everyone feels completely out of character. Shinkurou gets reduced to an obnoxious teenager, Yuuno has transformed into a walking boob-joke, Murasaki’s bodyguard has turned into an obsessed caretaker and Murasaki herself changed from a kid who was way too mature for her age into something that more resembles a cute mascot character. Overall, it makes me even more glad to see the huge changes that the anime made.

And it’s not like this OVA was funny either. And to think that the anime featured one of the best filler episodes out there.

  1. While I haven’t actually read the laptop or the exercise chapter, if there even is one (is this perhaps an OVA original, I certainly can’t recall the exercise dunno about the laptop). I do recall the pool chapter. Shame they went for essence of what the manga originally is. Oh well least we still have the anime.

  2. The manga is quite good, albeit fanservice-friendly. Still, you taste sucks so i´ll asume this ova is decent at the very least.

  3. NUOOOOO!! I want the subs NOW!! XD
I loved the serie and i started reading the manga today, therefore the existence of this ova is a nice find

  4. well I personally thinks that the Kurenai TV series is very much, much more inferior compared to the manga. Not to mention the change in character design, though. It is absolutely terrible.

This OVA only heightens my rating on the TV series.

  5. Meh, I’ll gladly skip this special epi entirely. I loved the anime, a lot, just because to me it was different and such an improvememnt over the manga :/ .

  6. Oh… wow. I’m skipping this OVA entirely. Besides the fact the characters look like complete SHIT in this, it’s fanservice-y? If that’s how the manga is, I now know the manga is shit as well.

The tv series was one of the most endearing series I have ever seen. The character designs were something different, and a lot more realistic when compared to all the other moeblob crap they put out. Shinkurou and Murasaki’s relationship was sweet and heartwarming as well. A teenage boy taking care of this little girl, as if she was his own sister? D’aww. Kinda breaks my heart to know that the manga has no sentimental value. 😐 I guess it’s one of the few times an anime is better than it’s light novel/manga counterpart.

Yes, lets judge an entire light novel series on a side story OVA. Brilliant!

  8. Saw it already! I really liked the anime, as it added deepness to the chars development with respect to the manga. I also liked how they animated just a single arc and dindn’t go for all of the novels.

But, i’d rather like they animated another full serie out of it. Maybe they tried with a single ova, to test the audience response before making another serie.

The oav lacks any depth the serie ever showed and goes on with a couple of uninspired episode at that.
The only manga episode, the pool episode was threw in without any concern. It showed us new chars without any introduction. The blod girl with the scarf and new Murasaki’s bodiguard are completely new chars introduced after the end of Murasaki’s arc. You watch them on the screen and wonder who the hell they are. Luckily i bothered to read the manga first or i’d be like WTF too.
The other two eps were original (i guess) and quite the bad too.
Who the hell cares about Ginko’s pc. Wasn’t really another interesting story to animate?
The last chapter was the worse of the three. It just destroys Murasaki’s char. Well, maybe Kurenai’s serie just developed her into a fine little lady too much, but, eww, now she’s been deprived of all charm and reduced to the brat she shouldn’t be! Poor kid :/

  9. Sigh…and I was so delighted to see a sequel had been made. But ‘fanservice’ is a big bad sign, that’s for sure. I have no familiarity with the manga or light novels but thought the anime was excellent. So nice to see a protective, familial approach instead of romantic (which is overdone), and Murasaki was such a great character…well, now I’m just repeating what many have said before me. Very disappointing, and maybe there will be a better next time. In the meantime, at least I didn’t spend roughly an hour and a half finding out.

  10. Yeah, I actually stumbled upon this OVA first before episode 1. I was about to drop it the moment I saw the OVA, but episode 1 caught my interest right away plus the rest of the series I find is very interesting instead of the generic crap that is the OVA.

This is bizarre and one of the first I see the OVAs are worse than the running series. Anime adaptations, when they wish to change the story & art direction, should be done this way and defeats the original in a very positive way. Also, I’m not judging it just by the fan service factor, but they shouldn’t include it in every other damn anime especially in golds such as this series. Other series aren’t very lucky as this one.

  11. This OVA isn’t anywhere near as bad as many are making it out to be. Outside of animation quality its a good episode.

  12. well this OVA targets Kurenai manga version-readers only, so previous audiences of the anime will be a little pissed off if they haven’t touch the manga yet. So I recommend read the manga 1st before watching OVA to understand characters better. Let say anime and manga version like alternative story of each other.
