Hourou Musuko – 10

I am confused here. Basically, this link explains how this week showed a compilation of episodes 10 and 11, with the real episodes 10 and 11 being released when their DVDs get released. that’s nice and all, but what the heck is next week’s episode going to be about? The preview says that it’ll be episode 11 again. If I had to guess, then that will probably be a compilation of episodes 11 and 12. AIC probably ran into some delays in the same way that Madoka Magica has been delayed.

Setting that aside though, this episode was brilliant. It was just an amazing aftermath to last week’s episode and made even better by a time skip along the way that showed Nitori actually growing up. The condensed nature of this episode left out quite a bit, but the added a whole bunch of new stuff to this series. Never did this series address Nitori’s anxieties and the people who make fun of him so directly. This episode rocked because it did a truckload of new things for this series, and yet nothing felt out of place. Or apart from those guys who confessed to Takatsuki, perhaps.

Overall though, this has been an excellent season, and it has set the bar for the rest of 2011 very high in terms of romance, comedy and mahou shoujos. Hourou Musuko, Madoka Magica and Level E: all have just been brilliant. Hourou Musuko took a while to get going, but it can really call itself equal to Aoi Hana: they’re both amazing series, but both are in their own distinctive ways.
Rating: *** (Awesome)

  1. I think the last epidoes is really just episode 12 but named episode 11 when it is aired on Noitamina.
Either way it sure have caused confusion. >_>

  2. Well, from what I’ve understood, the series was originally planned for 12 episodes, but since Noitamina time slot can be only 11 episodes long, episodes 10 and 11 had to be merged together(they’ll be later released on dvds as two full, separate episodes). So, basically, episode 10 is a combination of eps 10 and 11, whlie episode 11 airing next week is, in reality, episode 12 from the dvd release…

  3. I did watch episode 10 the compilation (which was very good as Psgels says), but I’m gonna wait until the true episodes 10 and 11 (along with episode 12) come out before I consider myself finished with it. But one thing’s for sure with me now: I seriously HATE Maho and Momoko! They’re such intolerant little brats it’s unbelievable! I want to punch them both so hard in the mouth it’d wake up their dentists! But yes, this anime is still awesome!

  4. I think Maho’s not so bad, she’s got her brother’s best interest at heart. Or so it is implied by the fact that she tries to discourage him from dressing up, and the fact she appreciates her boyfriends ( again implied) support for her brother. She’s of course got flaws like all good characters do so she comes across a little self-centered/bratty, but unlike Momo she still loves her brother despite his faults.

The character I don’t really understand is Doi. I kinda get the impression he’s a little homosexual, and is working through his own issues. Not saying its a perfect case but if you consider his general embarrassment around Nitorin, and his frustration with Nitorin rejecting him as a friend, and consider his bullying/teasing as an immature way of flirting its possible that Doi is a little gay for Nitorin and encourages his cross dressing play since its not “as gay” to like a boy who looks like a girl.

  5. @Zyke What an interesting idea about Doi. I was wondering why he was so interested in Nitorin. This could the logic behind it. I’m going to read the manga after the next (and last) episode airs. Perhaps there will be more background on Doi’s motivations.

  6. Way better than Aoi Hana (which I still enjoyed), in every way.

And I agree with Zyke on everything he said, Maho’s not that bad – just a typical sister. Momo was being the worst kind of person.
