High School of the Dead – 02

As for the series I’m not going to blog:
– Shukufuku no Campanella… who the hell found that a good idea?
– Seitokai Yakuindomo just keeps repeating the same jokes over and over again.
– Mitsudomoe has some actually funny moments. But it’s also utterly disgusting and it tries way, way too hard.

High School of the Dead of course has its problem, but in terms of atmospheric zombie bashing it’s a pretty solid choice this season. Tetsurou Araki, the director of Death Note, Kurozuka and that story with the really long title in Aoi Bungaku was the perfect choice to animate this thing and make it as atmospheric as possible with his unique style.

This episode wasn’t as good as the first, though. Mostly, this can be blamed on some of the new characters. The school nurse is just about an exact carbon copy of any other school nurse out there. Now first of all, this is something I’ve been wondering since ages: why are school nurses necessary in Japan? Really, at our high school the janitor knew first aid, and whenever an accident happened (which really was not often), he would take care of everyone. Are Japanese schools really so accident prone that they need to reserve an entire room for it, and hire someone who doesn’t need to do anything for most of the time?

But yeah, the big problem with that nurse is that she’s really annoying, along with that annoying sound that her boobs make whenever she does something. I really hope that we don’t have to listen to that for the entire rest of the series. Still, I’ve got to give credit where credit is due: she was decently fleshed out in this episode, and she isn’t an entire stereotype.

The other annoying character was that pink haired girl. Again, a collection of moe cliches: genius, tsunere, twintails, glasses, etc. The worst though was the part in which in she made NO ATTEMPT TO HIDE HER VOICE. She had the right intentions, she didn’t hide in the obvious places, she’s careful on where to go, she carefully analyzes the situation around her and yet she fails to think of one of the most obvious ways to give her away. Yes, it’s a zombie outbreak people. Let’s start yelling to everyone! Again though, credit where credit is due: her breakdown at the end of this episode promised good stuff. As long as she doesn’t continue yelling like that throughout the rest of the series, I’ll be happy.
Rating: * (Good)

  1. Actually, in Japan, the nurse’s office is more a place where you can rest if you’re not feeling well. I don’t know, do they do that I USA? If you’re not feeling well, do you get a bed to rest on?

  2. I’m not sure how this is in the USA, but in the Netherlands we never need to do such a thing. If you feel sick, you just call in sick. If you get sick halfway through the day, you do the same and just go home, or you get picked up by your parents.

  3. My highschool had a three nurses. most of highschools in europe usually have nurses. its a common practice. Of course “country’s brightest medics” NEVER get to work in schools. Its regarded as “last minute choice” job. Its either those too old to get a better job or those too stupid/obnoxious to actually have the guts to climb the ladder of the horrible dangerous jungle known as health system. 😉

As for Saaya(meganeko girl) – I think that was a point. She thinks she is a genius, she tries to act like one, but not everything can go as you think it should go. Hence as the time went by she made a mistake, and then another one which nearly cost her own life. She realizes that she can no longer be as “perfect” as she was in the normal life. However there’s a reason on why she acts as she does.

As for nurse – so far she is there because, well, duh, she is pretty much THE ONLY person with abilities to drive. Don’t expect her to start smashing zombies with baseball bats. she is their support/healer/driver.Of course certain character traits will get revealed soon and etc, but she’ll be just support/driver till her character starts to be developed. Which sadly(if this anime really will be only 12 episode long) will have to wait till the next season.

Let’s just say that neither character trully IS as he acts first episodes. Pretty much EVERY character in this series has multiple personality layers, character and personality traits hidden by the “masks” they themselves created while living in perfect and orderly present-day human society, that does not allow failures, flaws, obsessions or weaknesses.

  4. “but in the Netherlands”

What if you overdose on heroin during class ? One would think in the Netherlands such things happen fairly often.

  5. Yes we have nurses in HS in the US. If you are just feeling slightly sick they might have you just rest for a little. If you are really not feeling well they will call your parents to take you home.

Of course the nurses know first aid too.

  6. God I was worried about her from the moment she appeared in the credits. As the sexy/comic relief character, she’s totally out of place UNLESS she quickly ends up as a zombie toothpick, which isnt going to happen.

The boob noise reminded me of an interview with Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima: he’d told a programmer to add ‘boing’ noises when the player wall hugged in front of pin-up posters in GS2 and the programmer didn’t do it because he thought he was joking. Because anyone would think he was joking because IT”S A TERRIBLE, CHILDISH, DISTRACTING and out of place idea.

I just hope I can stick it out because I really enjoyed the first episode of the series

I don’t think anyone will be upset for a lack of Shukufuku no Campanella, Seitokai Yakuindomo or Mitsudomoe reviews. (your sum-up pretty much …sums them up as a whole)

  7. Japanese schools don’t have custodial staff as we might be accustomed to, since day-to-day cleaning is all done by students and teachers. The nurses at my schools seem pretty busy with being health instructors and looking after special needs students on top of running the infirmary.

None of which justifies an annoying character, but you asked a question that I could answer. 🙂

  8. We have school nurses in Finland. Though, most people just go there in hope they can skip part of class or get to go home.

Don’t listen to klacid guy, I read manga long time ago and I remember it being pretty good.

  9. Yeah, I like how the pink haired girl is supposed to be this genius, figures out the zombies can only sense sound, and then goes around screaming shit unnecessarily.

The drama all seems very cheap and forced to me. They somehow still find the time to monologue during a zombie invasion.

  10. In India there is no nurses in HS but again the janitor and sisters can take pretty good care in case of any health emergency problem. It is refreshing to know that students clean the pool and the whole school in japan.

  11. Also, school nurses in the US are usually… sorta old. I wouldn’t be surprised if that were also the case in Japan.

The problem I have with fanservice in anime is I don’t think it’s hot. Are cartoon women with boobs bigger than their heads really attractive? I mean, I’m pretty sure if I saw that in real life I’d be freaked out (in a bad way). I’ve heard people say this show is about fanservice and fun zombie killing. But I’d rather watch the next crappy Jessica Alba movie for fanservice than this, and the zombie killing is mediocre at best.

  12. So… how are the production values? Still good?

The only reason why I’m even watching it is because of the awesome animation, so if it’s still as stellar as the first episode, I guess I’ll stick around.

  13. Hey, what about the geek? This episode is the indicator that he has the potential to be an awesome character. I’ve read the manga, though, so I will say no more today.

  14. I remember whe hadn’t any nurses In Italian High School. One time i hurt myself during a soccer match at school, i just went directly to the hospital.
Anyway we also hadn’t any lunch room, computer rooms, labs, music hall and so on. Thus we had a libary (where i rem i entered just once in 5 years and didn’t find any useful book) and one gymnasium for each sex dender.
Oh yes we also had tha nice nice soccer court…

  15. Heh… That nurse… The moment she appeared on the screen I just shaked my head and thought to myself “if this goes on its dropped”

The questionable character designs were already something, but now this? Lol WTF is that boob noise? The violence and all has this B-movie feel to it which I dont mind, but man… If they dont get rid of the ridiculous fanservice (and I know they wont), Im dropping this next episode

  16. I’ll save you some time, Frost bro. Drop it now if you can’t handle fanservice.

Highschool of the Dead is zombies and tits. Not this serious survival horror shit that unfortunately many people keep thinking it is.

  17. For real Gene? Uhm i was thinking since the overboard fanservice was toned down a bit, this show could start improving!

  18. The fan service wasn’t nearly as prevalent in this episode as the first – I think Saya’s panties flashed three times and Rei’s once, as opposed to Rei’s panties being flashed 50 times in the first episode (I know, it’s an exaggeration) But seriously, the only annoying thing about the fan service that I have seen is that obnoxious boob bounce noise for the nurse – they need to fire the guy who thought that would be a good idea. As for the rest of the series, I can say that yes, this actually does get into a much more serious zombie survival horror mood. As it is I think it has done a pretty good job bringing the manga to life and letting us, the viewer, know that shit got real. I can’t wait until they get off of school grounds and start making their way through the city.

  19. I don’t understand panties fixation. It’s like, a girl can be wearing something completely un-sexy, but as soon as we see panty it’s supposed to be awesome? Give me a break.

Michiko to Hatchin does it best. Michiko is always wearing something hot. Eff panties.

  20. I bet my ass that if you dumbasses were in a zombie apocalypse you’d be less than half effective as any of the main characters, even the nurse.

  21. In Uruguay if you feel sick you don’t go to school. If you feel sick halfway through the day your parents are called and they have to pick you up and take you home. If you start to feel really sick halfway through, they call your parents plus an ambulance to check you out.

I’m not sure in everywhere else, but here there are hospitals, and apart from them there are “medical services”. Medical services are all private and let’s say you’re sick at your house but not feeling so bad to go to the hospital. You call them to go to your house, check you out a bit, tell if you need to see a certain doctor, etc. They also serve to send you from your house to the hospital if you need it I think.

I’ve always found nurses in highschools to be completely pointless IMO.

  22. I don’t really remember any nurses in my high school days here in the US. Though knowing me there probably was one but I just never saw him/her. The most I remember there being was a small-ish room with basic medical supplies and a little bed for you lie down on if you’re not feeling well/wait for your parents to pick you up.

  23. “I bet my ass that if you dumbasses were in a zombie apocalypse you’d be less than half effective as any of the main characters, even the nurse.”

    You’re making yourself look ridiculous.

  24. This episode left a bad taste in my mouth thanks to the pink-haired (obnoxious) girl. The drama felt forced and pointless.

  25. I thought the drama felt pretty pointless from episode 1. Main character finds out there’s a zombie outbreak and stomps into classroom. Ignoring his best friend (???) he snatches Rei’s wrist and tries to run away. Then after said best friend dies, main character pretends he actually gives a damn and tries to saunter off to exterminate zombies when Rei insults their supposed friendship. Okay, I don’t mind watching a show about an asshole, if that sort of character makes sense within the setting, but a phony is 10 times worse >

  26. Who watch this with brain intact anyway?
All people already know that you need to deactivate your brain and just enjoy the ride watching this anime.

  27. oh wow… sorry then.
I really never know someone is hoping for a good drama or story in highschool of the dead

  28. Production quality is generally low, and the “tits and ass” annoy me. Less still pans in the 2nd ep and I did see a few golden seconds. Like when The school nurse (im american, we had one)was rescued and they slammed the door to the room. At the slam there was a wee “splash” animation. So I can confirm they are doing little things.

Apparently someone needs to hire me to animate.
