Guin Saga – 15

Haha! To think that some of the best romance of the season (only surpassed by Phantom) comes from not a slice-of-life series, not a full fledged romance show, nor a drama, but instead a series that advertises itself as an epic fantasy series. I did not see that coming, but what makes the romance in this episode stand out is the fact that it’s completely void of any wimpy characters and for once kissing becomes something normal, rather than something sacred that should only happen once or twice.

My biggest surprise here is that Istvan and Linda have become a couple now. I especially loved the look on Remus while they were making out: for once it’s not the look of some siscon (which seems to be really common in just about every anime that has siblings of different sexes and similar ages!), but rather it’s the look of someone who dislikes inefficiency, and would wish that the two of them started to think about things that mattered.

And of course, Guin turns out to be fine, but what interests me is that even he didn’t remember what the heck it was that happened to him: he just… woke up at that island, nothing more. It probably has to do with where he came from, but apart from that I have no clue of what went on.

There was also plenty of eye candy in this episode. The island had some wonderful designs, and the newly introduced characters (are they? or did I forget about their introduction) all look great, with even the unimportant side characters having distinctive designs. The fight scene this episode also rocked, and for once it didn’t look rushed, which also was a plus. I’m really excited about this series right now.

So, how about a second season?
Rating: ** (Excellent)
Lots of romance, plot development and eye candy. Exactly what this show is good at!

  1. I love Guin Saga. It is what a epic fantasy series should be avoiding the pitfalls of many current fantasy epic series. It reminds me of The Heroic Legend of Arslan in that it combines adventure+traveling+politics+war+and romance as well as not a weird wardrobe style.

  2. Yes, I completely agree, I found this episode extraordinary, just extraordinary in every way!!! And I loved the scene with Naris and Amnelis, they form such a great couple! If I understood correctly, Naris really did fall in love with her despite the fact that he got close to her only to use her later ( well, at least I hope so, if he doesn’t play an act!) , whaoh!!!

  3. Oh yes, the romance is probably the main reason for me to watch every episode of Guin Saga like crazy 😛 Few weeks ago I even felt the sudden urge to find out who’ll end up with who (I mean getting married, having kids and stuff like that), so I went and got myself spoiled by reading Japanese wiki… I wouldn’t want to give anything away, so I’ll only tell you not to become too attached to the current couples, as things’ll get really interesting later and you’ll be very surprised, to say the least. Assuming that anime will ever get that far – it’ll definetely cover the material from the first 16 novels, but I’m not sure if there will be a second season. It probably all depends on how popular the series is in Japan…

  4. firstly, isnt rinda a kid? and how old is ishtovan? OMG wtf!!!! that whole romance thing was much tooo soon and i never got the feeling in all the previous episodes that rinda felt passionately about ishtovan (in a love love) kind of way….and in one episode its gone from 0 to 100….romance between a grown man and a kid is odd for an epic fantasy, unless this is a lolicon epic fantasy 😛

secondly, that whole seen to me seems like ihstovan is taking advantage of a little girls emonational state…doesnt that make him a terrible person? sure he is a good guy for wanting to protect her, but as a person its wrong…

also hopefully they will make things a bit more clear on how guin god on the island and what that ship was…

Rinda and Remus are 14 years old at the beginning of the story (so I wouldn’t call them kids anymore), Istovan is approximately 20 and Amnelis is 18 (no idea about Naris)…

  6. If you think medieval age, ppl get married 14, 15 years old that is very normal.
It is very wired to judge this fantasy by our modern world value.
You should read many history books and fantasy novels if you do not understand this story.
    (not anime!)

Well inbreeding was also somewhat common in medieval times but it doesn’t make it any less creepy.

What I’ve been wondering is if Istovan and Naris have ulterior motives. I am starting to think Naris might not be the great guy everyone seems to think he is and Istovan has always been questionable. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Yeah, I feel that Naris is kinda sneaky and
he is complicated person. It is interesting
to watch him. I think things wont be that simple with the story and Naris.

  9. Well, I’ve said this many times before, but though I love the anime, the novels do cover a lot more ground and with the thoughts being put behind the characters, the romances do not feel as rushed.
I look forward to what this anime has in store~

  10. My favorite episode so far especially because Rinda let Istavan kiss her *heart heart heart heart* kyaahhh >o

  11. I really hope Narisse is still just using Amnelis. I think he’s cool and that if he started obsessing over her like she does him, then it would make his personality… suck. D: Plus, I think he’s key to reviving Perros D:
