DanMachi2 is the kid in class who everyone knows is smarter than their grades reflect. If only they would get it together and take things seriously. In the finale of this mess of a second season, DanMachi finally rouses itself and delivers an episode worth watching.
Season 2 has focused primarily on a central theme: the relationship between deities and mortals. From the whimsical compulsions of Apollo to the more carnal use of Ishtar, DanMachi2 explores what happens when parties of vastly different lifespans become entangled. Of course, this centers on the flag”ship” of this show – Bell x Hestia.
Episode 12 brings out something I’ve been waiting to see for a while now: an old adventurer who once belonged to a deity. While I was afraid they would make it more tragic, DanMachi really did a nice, heartfelt job here. I had feels, and I was glad to have had them. It’s also nice to see Hestia and Bell work out their contrived conflict from the previous episode. I’d also like to point out that since Bell is at least a quarter deity (I’m assuming), this is sort of a strange conundrum to have, but I’m sure we’ll see more of that later.
Now the complaints – Ais. I’ve waited an entire season – just to see Ais get 3rd wheeled?! And what’s that about – “he’s a rabbit?” What on earth, Ais?! What does that even mean? I’ll admit, as a kid, I had an albino rabbit that strangely did resemble Bell, but that’s beside the point! What I’m hoping for is that this is Hestia’s moment and ship AisXBell gets back on course next season. Yeah!
Also, we saw Ais show more emotion towards the dragon scale (recalling back to Sword Oratoria) than she has in a while. Looks like an interesting setup brewing there.
So that’s it! We got through Season 2, which we waited years for. I’ll be taking a look back, but for this episode at least, we ended on a high(er) note, so I guess I’m a bit relieved there. Now we wait for the next season (and the beach!).
Also…did we just see the dungeon give birth? Yuck!
