October Summary

This season? Delightful! A-1 is on fire with six series at the same time, two of which are the best of their respective season. After years of begging, there are two Akitaro Daichi series airing at the same time. After years of complaining, Shounen Jump adaptations suddenly show their best sides since the OVA of Hunter X Hunter. After years of complaining, Shoujo suddenly is prominent again with actually good characters. There is very little bad fanservice stuff, and there are plenty of series that treat its audiences as adults. Hell yeah, bring this on!

#38 (new) – Onii-chan Blahblah – (2/10) – I refuse to spend any more time to try and get the name of these godawful incest shows right. Dropped.
#37 (new) – To Love-Ru – (2.6/10) – Just make this a hentai already! Dropped
#36 (new) – Busou Shinki – (3.1/10) – This one really was surprisingly bad. I mean the OVA was decent, albeit unremarkable. This was nothing but the most blatant of wish fulfillment with some of the dumbest characters of the entire season. Dropped.
#35 (new) – Aikatsu – (3.5/10) – The CG! The horrible, horrible CG! Dropped.
#34 (new) – Liche Light Club – (3.9/10) – A proper studio should have gotten this. What could have been an incredibly dark and twisted comedy got reduced to badly delivered sadism jokes. Dropped.
#33 (new) – Monsuno – (4.25/10) – Very cheesy kiddie shounen series that moves way too fast. Dropped
#32 (new) – Girls und Panzer – (4.6/10) – Why, Girls und Panzer. Why did you take yourself seriously? Did you seriously think that that would survive in this season? Dropped.
#31 (new) – Wooser no Sono Higurashi – (5/10) – Has a nice idea, that wears off after 30 seconds. Dropped.
#30 (new) – Hidamari Sketch – (6.25/10) – Hidamari Sketch never really hit me. It’s a combination of Shaft and characters that never really appealed to me and never really caught my attention. Dropped.
#29 (new) – Hayate the Combat Butler – (6.5/10) – I still haven’t found a reason to watch Hayate the Combat Butler. It wasn’t particularly annoying or anything, but absolutely nothing grabbed me over the three first episodes that I watched. At this point this series has gotten way too long for me to want to bother with it. Dropped
#28 (new) – Chousoku Henkei Gyrozetter – (6.75/10) – Hilariously bad. Seeing little kids who handle actual cars like they’re total pros was worth quite a laugh, but there is no way I’m going to continue with this. Dropped.
#27 (new) – Chuuninbyou demo Koi ga Shitai – (7/10) – Really good animation, but apart from that I have little reason to continue with this show. The characters are annoying, and there is just too little that happens for my tastes. There is much more interesting stuff going on this season, especially considering that there are so many other romance shows airing at the same time that may not be as well animated, but have much more compelling characters.
#26 (new) – Bakuman – (7.25/10) – If Bakuman was just 26 episodes long, it would have made a killer series. I don’t want to bother with it for 75 though. Dropped
#25 (14) – Sword Art Online – (7.4/10) – Well, here is one show that jumped the shark. I really liked the conclusion of the Sword Art Online arc. After that though, the new arc just kept making no sense (I don’t care if it’s explained in the novels), it has the most stereotypically evil villain and I really hate the way in which Asuna has been reduced to a mere damsel in distress, allowing Kirito to expand his harem even more.
#24 (new) – Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun – (7.4/10) – My problem with this series is the male lead. He’s way too forced: on one hand he’s too perfect, on other he’s too flawed. He’s trying to be everything in just one character, making him an unlikable asshole. The female lead deserves better. Because of that I’ve dropped this series. During a quiet season I would have watched it, but there is too much competition that is just more interesting.
#23 (new) – Medaka Box – (7.5/10) – The second season of Medaka Box is… boring. To me it just feels like a parade of over the top characters with crazy powers, but it lacks personality or any kind of engaging story other than “High School” and “Let’s evolve humanity by killing off lots of people”. The new villains aren’t compelling at all and are very much of the same. Will this really end well?
#22 (new) – Ixion Saga – (7.6/10) – My standards for comedy are high: I really want to laugh when I watch one, and Ixion Saga just wasn’t funny enough and it repeated itself a little too much within the three episodes that I watched. Dropped.
#21 (new) – Little Busters – (7.6/10) – I’m beginning to fear that this will end up more like Kanon, rather than Air and Clannad: nice, but ultimately lacking. Air and Clannad were amazing because they went beyond the formulaic “group of sad girls”. With the build-up that we’ve recently gotten here, I don’t see any hints for the same with Little Busters. It’s funny and enjoyable, but the girls have got some major issues. Their acting is pretty bad at points as well, especially the ditzy girl.
#20 (new) – Teekyu – (7.6/10) – … I’m still watching this series. Why!?
#19 (new) – Code: Breaker – (7.75/10) – My problem with Code: Breaker is this: what the hell is this series about? Witht he other series this season, I know what they’re trying to do and convey. Here though, we’re three episodes in and the only thing we know is that a guy is killing bad guys and a girl is trying to stop him. There is no depth to this so far and the terrible comedy during the school scenes isn’t really helping.
#18 (new) – K – (8/10) – K doesn’t have much depth. What it does have however is the best animation of the season and it’s very fun to watch in the way that it combines lot of different plot threads together. It could have been a bit more ambitious with these ingredients, though.
#17 (new) – Sukitte Ii na Yo – (8.1/10) – Here is an interesting romance: it neither claims its male lead nor its female lead as perfect. Everyone is flawed in this series. Also, unlike Kimi ni Todoke, it doesn’t take bloody ages to get somewhere. Its drama is a bit forced at times, and it tends to get a little overboard with jealousy, but it’s quite a charming series.
#16 (new) – Gintama – (8.1/10) – Gintama still has its problems, like how it’s still formulaic how everyone gets beaten to a pulp with lots of drama, only to walk away fine moments late, but the creativity still has me, especially the way in which the Kintama arc ended caught me by surprise.
#15 (new) – Magi – (8.1/10) – Magi is an adventure show. It can be a bit silly at times and it tends to have one-dimensional villains, but it’s fun, and it’s full of creativity. It’s also got an engaging main cast to follow: Ali Baba and Aladdin have a good chemistry together.
#14 (new) – Btooom! – (8.1/10)Btooom shows the ugly side of humanity. It’s got the bad luck that it airs right next to Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure though, because in terms of adrenaline it unfortunately lost by a long stretch. Still, it works as a suspense, even though the bombs aren’t quite realistic. The atmosphere of everyone trying to kill each other works well.
#13 (7) – Shirokuma Cafe – (8.25/10)

This month hasn’t been Polar Bear Cafe’s best, but it still managed to deliver its typical dry humour, sarcasm and corny wordplay. Highlight was the halloween bit.

#12 (new) – Robotics;Notes – (8.25/10)

This show had a slow start, but it’s fun and interesting. The male lead needs a bit of work, but the female lead is quite compelling to watch, and the characterization of the side characters is also pretty good. I’m not going to expect the next Steins;Gate here though.

#11 (new) – Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo – (8.25/10)

This show has really good chemistry. Its characters are all interwoven with each other and even though they seem like really bad clichés at first sight, they soon grow to be much more than that, and much sharper than I imagined.

#10 (new) – Zetsuen no Tempest – (8.25/10)

Fantastic soundtrack, and this show had the best first episode of the season. After that it lost that status when it went a bit too much into building up, but nevertheless this show has great characters, an interesting back-story and excellent action. This can really turn into something amazing with time.

#9 (10) – Poyopoyo Kansatsu Nikki – (8.4/10)

It’s pretty much the same story as usual for Poyopoyo: it’s still delightful slice of life with lots of small relatable scenes that are also really hilarious.

#8 (new) – Jormungand – (8.4/10)

Jormungand’s second season really surprised me with how much it improved over the first one. The characters are actually good, and the villains stopped being snarky and generic. The plot twists were particularly impressive here.

#7 (new) – Psycho Pass – (8.4/10)

Psycho Pass is fascinating. It aims to create these complex moral dilemmas that aim to really make you think. On top of that it’s got some great suspense and an amazing soundtrack to boot.

#6 (15) – Saint Seiya Omega – (8.5/10)

Saint Seiya has really gotten good here. Even a simple recap episode had me at the edge of my seat. It’s simple hot blooded action, but this was done so well in this month with the conclusion of the first half of the show.

#5 (new) – Kamisama Hajimemashita – (8.5/10)

Out of all the romances this season, Kamisama Hajimemashita by far has the best execution. Perhaps the story itself needs a bit more time to get going compared to Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, but the delivery is just perfect: it is really good at combining comedy and drama together, and every single episode is wonderfully built up, ending at an incredibly charming conclusion.

#4 (new) – Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure – (8.6/10)

This series definitely is not for everyone, but it really has been a while since I saw an anime with so much adrenaline as in this series. There really have been moments in which I just wanted to yell loudly alongside the characters. This show is just so completely over the top in every single way, and the creators look like they’re having so much fun in the process. The voice actors as well ham it up, but they ham it up with so much passion that it becomes an incredibly addictive series.

#3 (6) – From the New World – (8.75/10)

After one month, this is the series that has made the biggest impression on me. Its setting is completely original, but what also struck me is its consistency in its characterization: it just keeps building further upon the characters and they make this show compelling. I also absolutely love its variety: every episode has been significantly different so far.

#2 (1) – Uchuu Kyoudai – (8.9/10)

The past month for Uchuu Kyoudai has been slow, but incredibly detailed because of this. Especially the latest episode was just amazing in how well it portrayed the shuttle launch, and everything leading up to it. I didn’t get bored for a single moment here.

#1 (3) – Hunter X Hunter – (8.9/10)

This show has surpassed itself yet again this month. The spider troupe is for me the single best evil organization in any shounen ever. They’re just so professional and work so well together. Kurapika on the other hand got some amazing development. And we haven’t even reached the best part yet!

Aikatsu

Short Synopsis: Our lead character wants to become an idol
Oh god no! After the past spring season I have been spoiled by good idol shows with AKB and Natsuiro Kiseki’s idol subplot. But this season serves to remind us that there also is a lot of crap in the genre. When not about idols, this show is decent: just your average slice of life, nothing special but nothing really bad. When the idol performances begin however… oh dear lord. The CG! The horrible, horrible CG! Make it stop! Make it stop!
OP: No CG, interestingly enough.
ED: Nice idea to use a record for the ED. Boring song, though.
Potential: %

Psycho Pass

Short Synopsis: Our lead character weilds a gun.
Well, one season, two series with a fantastic soundtrack. First the audio of Zetsuen no Tempest blew me away, now Psycho Pass did the same. This is the kind of soundtrack that I can listen to over and over again even outside the series. For some it’s a bit too much on the foreground, but that’s something I really like. Beyond that, Psycho Pass just is a really interesting series, and this episode was an excellent example of that. This may be the umpth time in which we see a story from the perspective of a rookie, but this episode really was there to drive home how naive this rookie is. I also like how this episode wasn’t told from the perspective of the main character himself; they used him well for that, especially near the end of the episode. Beyond that the animation is for most part of the episode very nice, but there are a number of scenes that have visuals that really stand out. The gore is very detailed in this series, but also random scenes of really detailed lips caught my attention. These are the kinds of scenes that add so much to the visuals. And at this point, this season’s Noitamina aren’t the biggest budgetted series in terms of animation. Instead they’ve got very solid writing and characterization. Psycho Pass and Robotics;Notes first episodes were in any case much more interesting than the opening episode of Guilty Crown, and this looks to be far from the trainwreck that that show was. Thank god, because what we really have here is unique: not one, but TWO series on the Noitamina timeslot that go on for 22 episodes!
OP: Creative use of sounds and vocals.
ED: A bit too poppy, but quite energetic and fits the show.
Potential: 90%

Robotics;Note

Short Synopsis: Our lead character is a gamer and high schooler.
Okay, let me get one thing straight: Steins;Gate had an amazing opening episode. Robotics;Notes does not. Instead, this show is more of a slow burner. We’re probably going to have to wait a while before this one really kicks off, but in the meantime Production IG delivered some solid characters and a varied cast. The two leads work well together and they’re well acted, even though they’re just teenagers. It’s a good set-up, especially with another Noitamina series of 22 episodes again. I still don’t like how this show is meant to glorify games, but this episode did a good enough job of dancing around that issue and highlighting some of their other parts, and this is far from as bad as with The World God Only Knows. There is this bit of realism in the characters that helps too, not to mention that even though the characters are teenagers, they don’t try too hard and instead their charms are natural ones. All in all, this can work out quite well if it knows its build-up.
OP: Solidly made, but too plain.
ED: Entirely dedicated to one character who only made one short appearance.
Potential: 75%

Medaka Box Abnnormal

Short Synopsis: Our lead character fights a bunch of strong characters.
Hmm, I just realized a very big danger for Medaka Box with this episode. I mean, the reason why I liked the first season was that it went from a perfectly normal school series to over 9000. In this season, though, I fear that it’s just going to be nothing but these over the top fight with nothing to contrast it with. Especially because this episode introduced your typical cliched gang of rivals that Medaka probably all has to fight at some point, and they all probably have some kind of gimmick. The problem with that is that it grows old after a while. Will the creators be able to keep all these fights interesting? How will this show avoid that formulaic path that it’s dangerously close to now? Will there be more to this than just fighting? Take for example the girl that was shown in this episode: the way in which she talked in numbers was nice and all… but that also was her entire gimmick. Beyond that the fight wasn’t really that interesting.
OP: Generic opening with the upcoming characters.
Potential: 70%

Jormungand Perfect Order

Short Synopsis: Our lead character sells weapons.
Jormungand’s biggest challenge will be managing its characters. The plot is bound to be interesting: this episode showed that with the central focus being weapon dealing. However, that will be a big waste if the characters just all look the same. This episode made a good start by finally showing Koko as an interesting character, but there still is a lot to do for this show, because the side-characters nearly all have the same personalities. On top of that this episode finally introduced a major villain (or at least it looked that way), and her personality is like all the other female characters, only more extreme. This lack of variety really bugged me in the first season, and I really hope that it will be handled better in the sequel. The best thing would be to just have a select bunch of snarky characters, while making the rest set themselves apart in completely different ways.
OP: I don’t really like the vocalist in this song, but it does serve as a rather strong opening for each episode.
ED: Bit of a random use of a piano, but the effect is nice.
Potential: 75%

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo

Short Synopsis: Our lead character gets to take care of a cute girl.
Well, there you have it. There is a lot of bad stuff in this premise. The show is riddled with fanservice. There are lots of cliched characters. The characters are not ashamed to be annoying, especially when it comes to fanservice… and it is really well delivered. I mean, it really shows that there are talented people working behind this. The direction was far from what you’d expect with these kinds of romance series: the characters were really well portrayed: they were full of energy and the direction is full of these small details that bring the characters to life. Think of the subtle movements of the various cats in this series. All the characters in this show have presence, and even though the nudity gets incredibly forced at times (I mean, this is a premise about a guy who lives together in a mansion with two girls who have no sense of shame), but the way it’s delivered is something else, and makesimpact. Also, I feel that JC Staff are currently quite underrated. Sure, they make some crap, but there are some very good animators among them. They really showed that with this episode where with the right director, they can really breathe life to characters in ways that most other shounen romance fail with their too restricted movement. In a way, this reminds me of Denpa-Onna to Seishun Otoko, but better and actually much less annoying.
ED: Very nice artistic direction. Shame for the dull song.
Potential: 80%

Some Quick First Impressions: Girls und Panzer, Teekyuu and Ixion Saga DT

Girls und Panzer

Short Synopsis: Our lead character rides a tank.
Girls und Panzer: why? Just why? Why did you make all these decisions for your direction? I mean, you’re a series about a bunch of girls that ride a tank. Shouldn’t it be obvious what to focus on? Your director is Tsutomu Mizushima, a guy who excels at being over the top. This could easily have been this really over the top series with a lot of brainless fun and action. So why on earth are you taking yourself seriously? No really, there was no comedic moment in this episode whatsoever. They rode tanks for like three minutes, after which they switched over to some school. Add a lot of different characters to that… and yeah. This is Strike Witches without the fanservice!
ED: Montage ED with boring song.
Potential: 20%

Teekyuu

Short Synopsis: Our lead character plays tennis.
What the HELL was that?! I mean, you know Studio Mappa, right? The studio that was just founded from former Madhouse employees and did Sakamichi no Apollon past spring. Well, their next act is a 2-minute series with a complete lack of any kind of inbetween animation about two girls playing tennis. I mean, this was just bizarre: the characters talked incredibly fast and hyperactively. The jokes were like a shotgun: some kindof worked, and some didn’t work at all. It’s very hit or miss. The animation was… interesting. The episode was full of different drawings thatlooked dynamic, but lacked movement. Yes, the effect is really weird with the incredibly hyperactive pacing of this show. I’m not really sure what Mappa was going for here..
OP: Super-deformed and crazy.
Potential: 30%

Ixion Saga

Short Synopsis: Our lead character gets transported into a game.
You know, there is one thing that I did not know about Ixion Saga in advance: it’s a parody. I was fully expecting this to be this really cheesy fantasy show that should be passed up immediately, and this really looked to be the case at the start of this episode. And then… it just stopped taking itself seriously. Now, that alone is not immediately a good thing. Anime has so many terrible comedies out there, so this could have made this show even worse. But this brings me to the director, who previously worked on the first 100 episodes of Gintama. And yes, this was funny. This episode definitely had some parts that were bad, but for all of those moment it also had parts that were so bad that they turned good, and it had quite a few well delivered and actually hilarious jokes in its arsenal. The question now is to see whether or not they can keep this up. Shows like this generally can manage first opening episodes, but to keep up this quality for an entire series is quite difficult. Let me get beck on this one next week.
OP: DT! DT! DT! DT! DT! <- who the hell found that a good idea?

Some Quick First Impressions: Magi, Code: Breaker and Bakuman 3

Magi

Short Synopsis: Our lead character likes boobs.
So this is going to be the new series to occupy the prime time slot of anime: Sunday at 17:00. It’s a tricky time-slot: you can get access to a lot of viewers, but this also resulted in Ayakashi Ayashi being cancelled halfway through due to disappointing rates. For that, Magi has come up with a solution to make people talk about it: boobs. It’s a shame, because people will now remember this show as that show with the really bad boob jokes, rather than remember this for what it is: a Japanese take on Arabic folklore. The animation near the end also was pretty damn good and this episode had a pretty exciting conclusion, but the comic relief on the other hand was just BAD and felt really out of place. It still works somehow though and this episode had a lot of interesting stuff amidst the stuff that makes you facepalm, to the point where I’m willing to see where this one is going.
OP: Couldn’t you really have come up with a better song? I mean, you’re in Arabia for god’s sake. Make use of that opportunity to show some influences there!
ED: Same here: why go for J-pop if using classic Arabian instruments will make it stand out much more?
Potential: 75%

Code: Breaker

Short Synopsis: Our lead character meets a mysterious transfer student.
This opening episode was slightly different from usual. The standard for these kinds of episodes is to be all ove the top and throw in a lot of action. Not here: this episode was more dedicated to show that this series knows its build-up. Most of this episode was quiet, right until the end, where it delivered a number of very solid and intense scenes. That pay-off rocked. The rest though… needs work. The problem with this series is that it tries to be funny by using overused and forced romantic cliches. The entire school aside from the lead couple was very annoying to watch in the way they deitified that main couple, and how they just kept going with it. Still, this feels like a problem that with time will become less significant. This show at least had solid acting for the lead couple, and as long as the school setting will play a very minor role in the rest of the episode, it should be fine.
OP: A bit cheesy, but works as the opening for an action series like this.
ED: This one had a lot of overused j-rock cliches, plus the visuals were mostly just a boring slide-show.
Potential: 80%

Bakuman 3

Short Synopsis: Our lead character writes manga.
Well, I can be very short about this: I’m not going to continue watching Bakuman. Of course it’s interesting to watch a bunch of manga authors work together, but with three seasons, it’s just way too long. This episode reaffirms that I’m just going to waste my time if I want to keep up with this, because it wasn’t about creating mangas, but again focused on these soap opera plot twists that have really gotten old at this point. I guess it was a nice idea for the lead couple to have such an idealistic view on becoming a manga artist and voice actress respectively, but I feel like I’m getting beaten ove the head by all this. That’s why I just couldn’t continue with this show, even though I managed to finish Phi Brain: at least that one knew where its strengths lied and delivered upon that. Bakuman really would have made an amazing anime if they went with a story that fits in 26 episodes. This just goes on for waaaay too long.
OP: Granted, this was the best OP for Bakuman so far.
ED: This is just cheesy J-pop
Potential: 60%

Some Quick First Impressions: Sukitte Ii na Yo, Little Busters and Kintama

Sukitte Ii na Yo

Short Synopsis: Our lead character falls in love with a bishie.
This was really good! I mean really: this is a very good season for shoujo here. Perhaps Tonari no Kaibatsu-kun was a mysoginistic cliche-fest, but both Kamisama Hajimemashita and Sukitte Ii na Yo finally responded to some of the issues I have been having with the genre for years. This series finally has a main couple that is different. It takes its characters seriously, and the characters are not the same characters you see everywhere. The lead female here is socially awkward like Sunako, but the whole theme behind this is for once not purity. Instead, it’s distrust, and living in a state being constantly afraid of harassment. Heck, for once the creators actually found a use for the “annoying perverted best friend”-cliche. The lead female also dares to show some of her weak sides, rather than just being bland and not do anything. Sure, she gets protected in the end, but she reaches out for the guy out of her own accord, rather than being swept away by some random bad boy. That male lead also very clearly sets himself away from that: he neither falls in the cliches you see of bishies that the lead girl has to choose from. Instead he is this outgoing guy with a strange taste in girls.
ED: I dislike J-Rock. But for this ballad I make an exception due to the vocalist who is pretty good there. Although he clearly has trouble hitting the high notes.
Potential: 80%

Little Busters

Short Synopsis: Our lead character is a high school boy.
Hmm, I’d say that in terms of Key opening episodes, this one ranks above Kanon and Clannad, and below Air and Angel Beats. I mean, all those shows had their problems (Air probably the least), but what impressed me about this episode was the characterization of the five lead characters: their chemistry was quite enjoyable to watch, making this my top pick this season for school-based series this season. Their chemistry was both fun and engaging: their characters worked quite well together. This episode did have its problems though. There were a couple of very badly portrayed females. That laughing girl for example is the carbon copy of a stereotype that I have never seen done right. At the end of the episode another girl also appeared who was trying way too hard to be naturally charming, and of course this show has school idols. This show needs to work a bit on making more believable characters, but that was a problem with Air, Kanon and Clannad as well: the females looked incredibly superficial at first sight, only with their development that came much later in the series did they stand out.
OP: Some very overused OP cliches saved by a good vocalist.
ED: Same good vocalist, but this song just doesn’t work with me.
Potential: 80%

Kintama

Short Synopsis: Our lead character has straight golden hair and is loved by everyone.
Something I did not expect happened here. I mean, my relationship with Gintama is a bit of a shaky one: I absolutely loved the first 100 episodes. After it changed director, it stopped being as funny to me, and I ended up dropping it because it was too long, and I’d rather remember the best parts than to keep going with it while comparing it to the first. The same happened with the second season: it had some nice episodes, but I just didn’t find it as funny anymore. I expected the same thing to happen here. Instead, this was my favorite episode since the change of directors. Tomokaze Sugita, the voice actor for Gintoki, really was on fire in this episode, and his rants throughout the episode really reminded me why I fell in love with this series. Not due to the excessive violance or toilet humour, but rather because of its incredible sense of dialogue. That returned here. I remember how early on in the first series, Gintoki noted that everyone should be glad that he wasn’t named Kintoki, because they wouldn’t be able to air the show like that. A lot of stuff changed in the meantime, up to the point where the creators pretty much managed to get away with naming their show Testicles. This really was hilarious.
OP: Very nice, one of the few OPs that are actually funny.
ED: Eccentric but interesting vocalist.
Potential: 80%

Hidamari Sketch Honeycomb

Short Synopsis: Our lead character is an art student.
Well, the fourth time I check out Hidamari Sketch, and the fourth time in which I got no incentive to keep watching. This just is the type of slice of life series that just isn’t meant for me, and to be honest this was a bit of a chore to watch. This episode combined random slice of life scenes, with characters who were all really trying to be cute. It’s different from how Chuuninbyou did it, but the effect is similar, in which we pretty much get a cast that’s trying too hard. In a slice of life series like this in whih the cast is the single most important matter, it’s a bit of a problem to have none of the characters stand out. It’s all just so dull, hardly anything intersting happens. Beyond that: does this series really deserve so many sequels? Wouldn’t it just be better to make this a short but sweet series instead of dragging it on like this?
OP: Very obnoxious J-Pop, but at least the animation has some nice moments.
ED: It looks nice, but it’s also surprisingly plain and normal for a Shaft ED.

Onii-chan Dakedo Ai Sae Areba Kankeinai yo ne!

Short Synopsis: Our lead character has seduced his sister and the entire student council.
Urgh Japan… when will you ever quit making these utterly horrid incest series? This is the umpth one in the line and really: they still are terrible in every single way aside perhaps from the animation. This episode was nothing but the lead female hitting on her reluctant brother, and the worst thing is that this show frames this as if it’s the brother who is not normal. As the episode goes on it throws in three more girls who all have just one defining character trait that they keep flaunting all over the screen. I mean this was bad. By far the worst of the season and I am not going to waste any more time on this.

To Love-Ru Darkness

Short Synopsis: Our lead character is the romantic of every girl in existence.
There’s one line from the main character at the beginning of this episode that I find to be… peculiar: “…to someone like me, who is not used to being with girls.” DUDE! It’s been more than forty bloody episodes. What the hell have you been doing in that time in which you succeeded to seduce every single girl who laid eyes on you?! Beyond that, what do you want me to say? It’s porn. This time they dropped all pretense and just changed the premise into trying to get the lead’s harem as big as possible. There was some drama, and I guess it’s an improvement over the stupidity that was in the first and second season, but it’s still horrible and annoying to watch. Every scene seems to look out for ways in which it can stuff the male lead’s face in some sort of panties, like he’s some sort of panty-magnet. Just turn this into a hentai and don’t make me watch this for god’s sake.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

Short Synopsis: Our lead character is a rich noble’s son.
Well, there you have it. The fourth awesome opening episode of the season. I mean heck: this was absolutely delightful. It just screamed retro cheese, but it was so incredibly over the top that it became stunning. I mean, Dio Brando is such a great villain that every time he appeared on the screen I just sat there with a giant grin, but just about everything in this episode was done with incredible passion. Normally I’d complain about overacting, but the way in which this episode just took it over 9000 made it so enjoyable to watch. The show also has this reallly interesting visual style: like expected the animators didn’t attempt to make everything look clean and the characters often look off-model (not to mention the inclusion of some manga-style sound effects – really!), but the direction was so good. It knew what to animate properly, and the use of colours and poses was just delightful to watch. Why did it take so long to make a proper anime of this thing?
ED: Great song there, with great vocals and a very good use of a guitar.

Short Synopsis: Our lead character has this evil side that murders people.
Whoa, now this is a feast for the senses! The graphical style really shows that this comes from the same people as Mardock Scranble, but even then I was surprised by what a visual orgasm this was. And they made it look so easy. Every frame of this episode looked utterly gorgeous, but what’s even more impressive is that at times they actually bothered to animate the background art. Keep a look-out for the skating scenes, because those were particularly gorgeous. On top of that, this show has a very creative soundtrack: it’s diverse, has very catchy songs and comes with a ton of different styles. The voice acting though… not so good: Lotsa Engrish! Beyond that though, this is a show that was clearly inspired by Durarara, and that’s a very good thing: there were lots of different characters, lots of stuff going on at the same time. It very much was an introduction episode, and this can still go anywhere, but I’m glad to see that this show tries so hard: so many characters are difficult to balance well, but they can get some very good stuff out of this when they manage to pull it off. Some minor complaints: this show has bad hacking going on, and for some reason they did manage to include a school in this series. There are a few cliches in this show that just seem to be there in order to look cool. I know that that’s exactly what this show is trying to do, but there is such a thing as taking things too far.

Btooom!

Short Synopsis: Our lead character wakes up in a video game.
One of Madhouse’s specialties is adrenaline: creating those series that focus on building up this stuff. In that way, Btooom is the perfect series for them. It focuses on this teenager who ends up in a game world, but usually with these kinds of stories, the game is an RPG. This time, we’re talking about a full blown action game in which people kill each other with bombs. This is really what I’m looking for for a weekly dose of adrenaline: it got the emotions of the lead male right, combining bewilderment with this sense to survive. This episode already gave a bit of a taste of what the battles will be like, and they’re tense, but also completely unrealistic. It’s a missed opportunity that this series should have put some thought into its explosions, but right now they’re mostly plot devices. The soundtrack and animation are pretty solid though. I mean this isn’t going to win any awards, but if it can keep up this atmosphere then it’ll be pretty damn entertaining. Just handle the lead female with a bit of tact, okay?
OP: Quite stylish, but degenerates into a bit too much of a copy of other OPs as it goes along.
ED: Is that Chiaki Ishikawa? One of my favorite singers for these OPs and EDs. Not her best work, but still a great voice.

Some quick first Impressions: Zetsuen no Tempest, Busou Shinki and Hayate the Combat Butler – I Can’t Take My Eyes Off You

Zetsuen no Tempest

Short Synopsis: Our lead character has this terrible sense of hairstyles.
Holy crap! I didn’t think it was possible, but something actually matched From the New World’s first episode! Seriously, that’s three amazing episodes this season already. Zetsuen no Tempest has a great premise, great characters, a very sharp and interesting dialogue, terrific action and really good animation. That’s the base for a very solid show, but it goes further. There were a few things that really amazed me. First of all: the soundtrack. Oh my god, that was haunting! I mean seriously, this is a very strong contender for the best soundtrack of the year. It’s not just really complex and keeps changing, but there is so much emotion put into it. Beyond that though, this episode had something. I’m not sure whether it is actually true or not and I need more episodes to really confirm this, but this show might have the X-Factor. That really hard to describe feeling that happens when everything just comes together. Yeah, this is another one to keep your eyes out for.

Busou Shinki

Short Synopsis: Our lead character lives together with four cute girls.
Oh boy, this one turned out shameless. Remember the young boy that appeared in the OVA one year ago? Well, he grew up into the same high school lead you see in every harem. The small figurine he met? Well, she turns out to be a complete moron. This entire episode was just fantasy wish fulfillment: “Oh master”, “Let me serve you master”, “Let me wake you up master”, “Let me trip and fall over and get covered in this sperm-like substance master”, “Let me put on a maid costume master”, “Let me keep this precious love letter of yours save master”, “Let me clean the house like a good servant should master”. I mean, this isn’t even the first time in which we saw a first episode about a girl cleaning the house while the male is away, only to make an even bigger mess. How oddly specific is that? And this show has four of those girls, all as mind-numbingly stupid as the other. Yeah, this pretty much was the worst episode of the season so far.

Hayate the Combat Butler – I Can’t Take My Eyes Off You

Short Synopsis: Our lead character is the butler of a cute girl.
Well, time to check if I missed something with Hayate the Combat Butler. And I have to be honest here: I just didn’t find this episode funny. I chuckled maybe once… during the juice joke. Apart from that the comedic attempts were… inoffensive. It’s not like there were many bad or forced jokes, but nothing to make me want to keep watching. Unlike the other episodes I watched (the first episodes of the first and second season respectively), there actually seems to be some sort of plot line to keep everything together beyond the premise of Hayate being a combat butler. The thing with going to Vegas, and Nagi’s father… has some slight potential I guess. But still it moves slow and the creators feel the need to pad things out with this really stupid kidnapping that even the characters are getting tired of. Kigimiya Rie also doesn’t really help, and on top of that: this episode seemed to indicate that this was the first time in which Nagi told about her father. Keep in mind that this is after like, 75 episodes. What have they been doing in that time?
ED: Some random side character with what I have to admit is a nice artistic direction.
Potential: 60%

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon 2 Review – 76/100

Horizon had so much going for it. In this season of creativity, it fit right in with its premise, and all sorts of weird powers for each of its characters, its unique sense of combat and its huge back-story. Along the way though, something went wrong with me. What went wrong, and why did this happen?

The thing is, that even though I mildly enjoyed this show, I could hardly bring myself to care about it. I barely managed to finish this sequel without dropping it and each week I had to push myself to watch another episode. It’s not like the episodes themselves were boring: there was enough action and creativity to prevent that from happening and this was far from as generic as Tari Tari was. Still, there is something in the style of storytelling that just could not catch my attention.

The reason behind this is something that I’ve noticed in a few other Sunrise series as well (they’re the one who produced this series), mostly Gundam: the action overload. This show wants to try so hard to deliver action that it keeps on delivering as much action scenes as possible. These action scenes are well animated, and they involve interesting powers clashing against each other, but there is so much focus on them that this show forgets about everything else. The balance is completely gone!

The result is that among all these creative action scenes, nothing really stands out. This show starts with a scene, then moves onto the next and then the next again, without any of them making any impact beyond mild entertainment. It’s like having a 7-course meal in which every dish consists out of some variation of chocolate pie: sure it’s delicious and all, but it’s just way too much and too monotone.

A nasty side-effect of this is that this show also refuses to spend time on fleshing out its cast. Every scene has to make an impact or build-up for the action, and we hardly ever get to know the cast beyond a few comedic skits that do very little in giving them any kind of character to sympathize with. The majority of them are bad boob jokes anyway. And I mean, there is this romance subplot that feels forced at best, but that’s the most character development we see in this entire series.

Horizon is a show that does one thing really well, but instead of using the rest to support this, it just ignores this. The complete lack of any attention to balance just made me unable to care about what was going on. The plot and setting are saved by good source material, but in the end I just can’t recommend this show because of this.

Storytelling: 7/10 – Lack of balance: this show is just action, action and more action without anything to differentiate it inbetween.
Characters: 6,5/10 – Great ideas behind them and they really try to be likable, but this show doesn’t take that further: every character in this show is completely one-dimensional.
Production-Values: 8/10 – Very solid, albeit that the character-design style still look quite ugly.
Setting: 9/10 – This is where this show shines: a huge plot, creative powers. You can see that the original source material spent a lot of time in making this stand out.
