If you follow the seasonal preview and the first impression posts, you get an idea on where I stand about P.A.Works originals as a whole. I have deep respect for an anime studio that prioritizes original contents over adapting popular-but-empty isekais and idols and all that jazz. At the same time, it’s a bit frustrating to see these series are quite there but never fully reach their own potential. Almost all of their previous originals start strong but fail to stick the landing. After 3 episodes of Aquatope, I can sense the same patterns – it’s thoughtful and resonant in small moments but doesn’t quite have a strong narrative to carry its fuel.

Kageki Shoujo!! – 04 [Tears Overwritten]
After putting the viewers through the emotional gauntlet last time around, Kageki Shoujo returns this week attempting a more balanced tone in narrative, adding in bits of slapstick humor interspersed between moments of self-reflection and painful reminders, while focusing on Ai’s stalker and delving into the reasons behind his mega-fandom of JPX.
Some parts don’t work as well as they could have but the ones that do really put the series’ strengths front and center.

Kageki Shoujo!! – 02+03 [Those Who Long to Cross the Silver Bridge | The Teddy Bear]
When I was little, six or seven years old, I used to wonder where babies came from.
The story about a hardworking stork carrying them around had started to seem less plausible by that age. Moreover, our home didn’t even have a chimney! No, no, it just didn’t add up. I had realized by that time that mummy and papa were tricking me and not telling me the true story of how I came to be on this planet. So, one day, I confronted my mother about the truth. “I would be tricked no longer. Hmph!” I must have thought to myself. I remember pestering my mother till she finally gave in and told me that it was she herself who gave birth to me. That after she had married my father, she had gotten ‘pregnant’ and a whole nine months later I had come out of her tummy. Which, truth be told, sounded even more preposterous than being delivered by a stork. But since she assured me that it really was the truth, I reluctantly believed her.
I had asked her how does a person get ‘pregnant’ and she’d told me that, “After a boy and a girl get married and start living together and fall in love with each other even more, they try to show their love by making a baby.”
“But how do they show their love?” I had asked.
I remember the question flustering her for some reason and her only response being, “When you’re older, you would understand”. Heh, little did she know that I was a real smart kid. I had seen plenty of movies to know that when a boy and a girl were meant for each other, they’d share a kiss.
That’s how they showed that they loved each other.

Odd Taxi – 13 [Where to?] FINAL
Sorry, did I say I hoped Odd Taxi would “stick the landing”? I didn’t expect them to REVERSE GRAVITY’S POLARITY WITH THE MASS OF THEIR – *cough* excuse me, I got carried away. As I was saying, this is clearly the anime of the season – probably the year.
Megalo Box Nomad – 13 [El con alas lleva al sin alas, y el sin alas bendice al con alas]
Welcome all to the finale of Megalo Box: Nomad! It’s been an interesting ride with ups and downs, both of which we will talk about in this weeks episode. If you’re looking for a final review just give me a few days, it’s almost done. So without further ado lets dive in!
First up lets talk about the visual aspects of the fight. By and large I would say it was… lackluster? Meh? I wouldn’t call it disappointing because the narrative beats were strongly delivered. But as far as fights go Nomad’s best action was still a sparring match. Its a really weird allocation of resources to me. Did they not want the spectacle to overrun or take away from the narrative of Mac’s fight? Or did they just decide that the simpler background and lighting of the sparring match was easier to handle? I’m not sure. Whatever the case though, this fight wasn’t a very “hype” fight and that was a little disappointing. Luckily for us that the fight wasn’t the main draw of the episode or even the show. That honor goes to the narrative.
Odd Taxi – 12 [Not Enough]
Who would win, 2 competing gangster teams or one walrus best boi?! The rest of this post is my random thoughts and conspiracy theories, so bear with me as we hurdle towards our taxi conclusion!
Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song – 13 [Fluorite Eye’s Song]
There isn’t a weekly summary this week and after writing about it for two months, it wouldn’t be fitting to have nothing published for the final episode of Vivy. Many times before, I would see anime that have great opening episodes before crashing and burning as it crosses the finish line. Frankly, I’m just happy if a show could manage to hold itself together the entire way. Thankfully, Vivy managed to stick the landing even if it was predictable with its excellent execution of its themes and Wit Studio’s direction.

Odd Taxi – 11 [If We Could Go Back To That Day]
Here we are, the presumably penultimate episode of Odd Taxi – All the mysteries are laid bare! Well, almost. Let’s try to figure out whodunit.

Odd Taxi – 09/10 [Hero’s Melancholy/We Have No Tomorrow]
Odd Taxi is coming down the home stretch, and it’s…a bit of a bumpy ride. Not that it’s bad, it’s just messy. Let’s get into it.

Odd Taxi – 07/08 [Trick or Treat/Bless You]
Sorry everyone – I’ve been travelling (and can’t sleep in a face covering on a 9 hour flight T_T). Worse than that, I failed to acquire an Odokawa shirt (I found out there are “good” and “bad” Aloha shirts…I guess Odokawa has “bad” ones that apparently people get insulted if you ask them for).

I haven’t even seen the latest episode as I struggle to catch up, but let’s talk about the previous two!
