Welcome to this week on oh-yeah-there’s-also-a-dungeon! Today we have an idiot announcer, magical syndicated network television, and what happens when management is in charge of logo design.
Welcome to this week’s Dungeon! We have thickening…plots! Also, Hestia shows up late, Bell gets beat up (and likes it), and Lili wins a high stakes drinking game!
For starters, let the record (and the previous blog post) show that I correctly predicted this episode would see the mechanics behind changing families. But boy was I wrong in how we would see it in action. I figured it would be with prize money from the Apollo family to buy out Lili. The multiple transactions and how they came about caught me off guard.
This week’s episode of Fire Force has obvious implications beyond anime – the KyoAni fire. I’ll be addressing this episode as it was without wading into any of the horrific tragedy or any censoring/changes that may have occurred.
Episode 3 starts off with long winded exposition and world discussion. Surprisingly, we meet the bad guys, the state of Earth, and the major players behind the scenes in the span of 15 seconds. Not my favorite way to introduce setting – I would rather be shown than told. From there we are thrust into the newbie online diner games, which I actually liked. Instead of typical shonen overblown tournaments for the local nose picking competition, these rookie games were something that felt like an inter departmental team building exercise – a nice realistic touch.

Welcome to DanMachi Episode 2 a.k.a. “Extreme Apollo Obstacle Course.” One of the things that I enjoy most about DanMachi is that they put it all out there, unashamed. Some shows spend 30+ episodes and have only the subtlest hints of relationship advancement or expression of how the participants feel – DanMachi is interested in no such thing. Confession during a run-and-gun fight? You got it! Getting friendzoned causes you to march right up the enemy and demand a duel. Okay!
With BEM released we come to the end of the First Impression period and the real beginning of this Summer Season. With 2 new writers on board I am happy to say that the 1st Impression had gone smoother and much faster than ever before. To make it even more exciting, we have 2 good news for you readers. First, this season Star Crossed Anime will cover a total of 12 shows, which if my memory serves right is the highest since psgels left the site. After many behind-the-scene black-market deals and fist fights and Mexican standoffs to make sure we can cover shows we wanted, this is our Summer 2019 blogging schedule:
Mario: Kanata no Astra – Cop Craft – Carole & Tuesday (carry-over)
Lenlo: Vinland Saga – Dr. STONE – Kimetsu no Yaiba (carry-over)
Wooper: Mix: Meisei Story (carry-over)
Amun: Fire Force – DanMachi 2
Armitage: O Maidens in Your Savage Season – Given
Helghast: Lord El-Melloi II-sei no Jikenbo: “Rail Zeppelin” Grace note
Second, it’s the new bloods’ idea to give First-Episode Awards where the staff vote for their favorites and worst (Credits entirely to Amun for the concept, layout and those lovely icons) so you readers can have a better grasp on the seasonal reception so far. Let us know if you like the idea and which category you would like us to include in the future. I’ll stop writing now and just let the awards speak for themselves.
Welcome to Fire Force! I’m your infernal host for the season (and hopefully many more), Amun.
Fire Force kicks off as the highly anticipated sophomore work of Atsushi Ohkubo (known for Soul Eater). The most pressing concern I’ve heard so far is the show couldn’t possibly maintain the level of quality from the first episodes for all 4 cours that are slated. Episode 2 helps extinguish some of those fears, although I can see areas where good direction decisions reduce the amount of animation required. The director is a veteren of the Monogatari series, and some of the decisive cuts remind me of that – in a good way. The scenes pack more punch and probably take substantially less effort to make – a double win in my book.

Hello! Call me Amun – good to meet ya!
The kind bloggers of this site have graciously allowed me to join their ranks. A bit about me – I’m a 30 year old Happa who is gainfully employed as a programmer/manager/pointy haired boss/whatever (you’re here for anime, not a resume). As discord embarrassingly revealed to the other writers, I currently play League of Legends, though I was sufficiently addicted to WoW in the past (afl lock, yessir).
My anime instincts tend to wander towards shonen, with good characterization and world building as musts. I’ve been watching anime now for about 15 years (I tend to be anime only with resorting to manga when there is no hope for future seasons *sniff*). The show that got me hooked was Hikaru no Go, and I haven’t looked back since.
A picture’s worth a thousand words, so here’s a small banner for some of my top personal picks.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy my thoughts and if not…flame me until I get better! (+1 for everyone who can name all anime shown in the banner…+2 if you caught the previous pun).
Let’s watch some anime together!
