Mirai Nikki – 06

Um. Yeah. So I did hope for more time to flesh out the characters. With that however, I did not mean to just devote an entire episode on romantic hi-jinks. That’s just boring. At least try to blend things in a bit. So on one hand this episode was just annoying, with Yukiteru’s mother and all. It’s overdone, it’s not very good, and could have been done much better. It was full of bad cliches from your standard romantic comedy. What also really bugged me though, was that this episode had no build-up whatsoever. We just have a bunch of random hi-jinks, followed by a shot of psycho Yuno, with no attempts to build up atmosphere. The same goes for the new diary holder. You’re supposed to introduce these characters with an air of mystery. Having a kid as the next diary holder is a surprise. It doesn’t work when you don’t build up this mysterious atmosphere around her and just have her immediately show these dolls of her that have been in the OP for ages. The problem with this show is that nearly every character is crazy. You can’t just throw in yet another crazy character and just hope that it’ll automatically work. Rating: – (Disappointing)]]>

1. thought the episode was fine personally 😛
I liked seeing how Yuno reacted in ‘normal’ situations, and the lead in the the next diary holder was pretty good in of itself, next episode should be amazing considering yuno’s around

2. That’s an interesting take. Personally though, I found the past two episodes a little too intense, so it’s about time to gear down a bit. The audience also got a glimpse of the next diary holder, and what he is capable of. So I think that’s sufficient build up by itself.
As for your complaint about the “dolls” appearing in the OP for ages, well, the kid (along with everyone else) made an appearance at the end of the first episode (in shadows, but his figure and voice were too obvious)
Not to mention the ED sequence. Call it official spoiler if you want.
Having read the manga, I originally anticipated this episode to end at a certain point, which would probably be somewhere close to your ideal mix of rom-com and thriller, but trying to time it, I think it will take another 7-8 minutes, while cutting OP, ED and omake would only save you about 5 min
And what’s more, if we move this segment to episode 6, episode 7 would be over in around 15 min before we reach the end of this arc. I’m sure they will try to finish the entire arc in the next episode, making it quite packed with action.
Overall I have to say the anime team did the best they could timing-wise.

3. The main problem with this show is that the plot holes are getting bigger and bigger as it goes along. The mother was concerned about the cult but not the fact that her son’s school was blown up and a pile of kids killed? The fact that her son was targeted in that incident? I can’t see how in any universe she would not know about any of that.

4. @ Scruffy. I don’t see how tiny, mundane details count as “plot holes.” She obviously called him, since she has been at work this whole time, but the show realizes it doesn’t have 50 episodes to cover every tiny detail and cut it out. And Fourth obviously covered up the details (Yukiteru, Yuno and Minene) so the other Holders don’t find out about them in the news paper.
And this arc is a little awkward to handle but I think the studio does a perfectly fine job

5. @Scruffy, here are the magic words to get you though Mirai Nikki.
“Just go with it”
Cause the plot holes are just getting started. You wouldn’t believe some of the stuff that’s coming up.
@Lostsage, It’s a pretty unbelievable feat to cover up the deaths of tons of children. I wonder how Fourth convinced all those parents to stay quiet about their dead children…

6. I always found this arc to be the least well done in the story, but it’s worth gutting out to get to the rest.
Oh… and you might want to consider the possibility that only crazy broken people would be given a future diary. Maybe being crazy is one of the prerequisites.

7. After saying last week, how I thought the skits at the end were good, this week they shoved in a completely pointless skit about miso soup OTL

I have to disagree with psgel about this episode being disappointing, the mother was a bit too much, but I quite liked the contrast between the rom com hijinks with the psycho Yuno. The bit when she’s in the bath, and then she does the crazy eyes, sent a tingle down my spine, especially when we realise that she came with murderous intent.
As for the little boy.. puppets creep my out so, he’s already creepy for me, I liked the bit where he mashed the two puppets together and made breaking noises, and the sudden murder attempt was surprising, but I think it made sense. He’s a bit too loud, and reminds me more than a little of Yuno, I’ll have to see if that gets too much for me.
Overall, I think it had enough so that I wasn’t bored, it even had a scene with 9th, but having said that, it felt rahter short. Maybe not enough happened, but it still left me anticipating the next episode. I wonder what the little boy’s diary does!

8. @kero The next episode if well done will blow your mind. It’s actually pretty funny.
@psgels Next episode I think you’ll have to turn the brain off, it will actually be the most ridiculous episode until this point. Try not putting much thought into it.

9. Here I must disagree with Psgels. While this episode was def rom-com & less intense than the previous episodes that was necessary in order to properly build up anticipation & drama for the new story arc. U downshift when u focus on character. Otherwise u only desensitize the audience with a fixed pace & end up flattening the suspense.

10. Yeah, as a manga reader this is one of those episodes where the author’s need not to spoil various upcoming surprises kinda checkmates the ability to tell the story in a sensible way (can’t say much without SPOILER). Better writing could’ve made this work a lot better.
The guy upthread who talked timing is right: this arc is kinda crap, but it also doesn’t divide cleanly even if you cut out the OP/ED/omake, so it’s bad pacing but understandable given the flow in the original material. Next episode should be an action whirlwind.
I didn’t find Yuki’s mom that unbelievable; I wouldn’t act that way, but it’s pretty understandable “I feel like a bad parent so I’m going to try to hard to be a cool parent” behavior. See it all the time with my friends who’re divorced and/or with jobs that keep them too busy to spend much time with their kids.

11. @ Aidan I never meant he covered up the whole thing, simply that he kept Yuno and Yukiteru out of it, so no one knew that Yukiteru was the main target.
It just seems that people nit-pick the crap out of the show since it has a realistic setting, but everyone realizes they have diaries that tell the future?

12. @vonter is it something to do with the puppets? it’s a puppet diary?
If there ever was such a thing Mirai Nikki would make it so.
@lostsage, people just have different levels as to what they accept, even if future diaries aren’t real, there ought to be a set of internal rules and an internal consistency.
I think @scruffy makes a valid point about how, everyone seems concerned about the sacred eye suicide, but there didn’t seem to be that big a deal about a terrorist plot and half the school being blown up. It is interesting to find what is same/different from the manga. But at the same time, if it’s not shown in the anime, it doesn’t make it less inconsistent or problematic, just because it’s in the manga.
I’m not having many (or any problems) with Mirai Nikki, and I don’t care so much because I have super low expectations in terms of plots, and the horror thriller and I wonder what the next diary holder’s power is! element is enough to have me hooked.
but there are other shows where things just bugs me, and I express my opinion on it.
@guest, interesting point about absentee mother trying to act cool, I never thought of it like that.
I wonder if the fact that her mother is a game developer plays some part in the storyline, it’s a pretty interesting job role, and I could see it relating to the future diaries somehow.
Or I may be reading too much into it.

13. The miniature plot holes i can go with, but something is wrong.
I mean, a God called Deus ex Machina who can’t fix his own decaying body? He’s a GOD for crying out light.
The only possible explanation is that Gods have a limited lifespan so they can’t be God forever – they need to find a successor before that.
Anyway, really enjoyed this ep, found it funny but I was creeped out when I saw Yuno’s original intentions and foreplanning… and those eyes…

14. This is my least favorite arc, but they still did a good job animating it. psgels, just bear with it for now, it will get more whacky and less comedy-like. I think your assessment that everyone is a psycho in this show is not far off.
Mirai Nikki does have some plot holes, but some of the things cited as plot holes here really aren’t.

15. A lot of things are actually spoiled in the opening, including one of the biggest mysteries in the series, but the people who’ve only watched the anime won’t actually know what they’re spoilers for.
Also, Reisuke is a boy. Yukiteru’s mom specifically said so in the episode itself.

16. i liked this episode. a lot. i think the borderline schizophrenic way they’re swinging between action and almost romcom is really interesting, and kind of reminiscent of yuno herself.
