Some Quick First Impressions: Pokemon Best Wishes

Pokemon Best Wishes

Short Synopsis: Our lead character wants to be a Pokemon Master (at least, that’s what I think he’s still doing).
Here is my issue: with the huge amounts of money that Oriental Light and Magic (the animation producers behind Pokemon) have been making… they still don’t really put in much effort in the animation quality here. I mean, this first episode had a bunch of cheap effects and a number of scenes that could have definitely used more quality checking. What happened to all of the profits that this series has made as one of the biggest commercial successes in the history of anime? It’s been four years since OLM made any series that wasn’t just meant for children, and to be honest I find this really cheap. Take some risks, dammit. Anyway, about Pokemon: I used to be a big fan when I was but a small teenager, but the major problem with this show is that it’s just so damn long. Most of the episodes are pointless, filler and cheaply written, but I like how it managed to create its own world with its own culture and legends. That’s what really hooked my younger version, and helped me become a fan of anime. This first episode was again very safe, but I like how the new female lead doesn’t seem like yet another Misty-clone. Plus, there was one twist in this episode that could be showing that this series is willing to head into a new direction (as shown by Ash/Satoshi’s complete absence from the first promo-art), so I’m at least curious.
Potential: 10%

  1. I agree with you about OLM’s animation. It’s rather pathetic really. There are dozens of kid’s shows out there with much better animation than Pokemon and yet aren’t as safe to invest large amounts of money on. There should be more effort placed in this series if they want fans!

  2. what I noticed during the DP series is, that the animation quality of pokemon has a repetetive scheme: one episode is fairly good for pokemon standarts, another is alright and the next is really bad. repeat. same goes with their episodic stories, however they only have a really entertaining episode every…let’s say 5 episodes. Then there’ll be about 2 so-so episodes and another 2 boring standard ones…I wonder if they’ll improve during BW, since they already really improved during the DP season (imo.) I’m going to watch it, as long there’s a group subbing it. But then again, I’m a pokemon fangirl all the way.

  3. Wow I never knew you see Pokemon!
Well same here,I was a pretty much Pokemon fan.I saw the anime up to Generation 3 till I gave up.I wonder why they dont give this series a conclusion, now that there is generation 5!Who knows how many more generations they are going to make.
But I love their games! Will be waiting for B/W to be released in English 🙂

  4. I seriously can’t wait to see this! I’ve been a Pokemon fan since I was a kid and I still am to this day! I might get the first season boxset at the New York Anime Festival later.

  5. It improved during D/P? I never knew that. There was a pissy kid named Shinji who was pretty interesting, but other than that I can’t say I’ve seen much of it.

  6. @hoiut: well, YMMV. I thought Shinji was one of the major flaws of the DP season (next to, obviously, Team Rocket) And after Advanced everything is an improvement anyway.

  7. Since Pokemon is such an easy money maker, I think that contributes to the low animation quality–there’s no motivation to make it good.

I would love to watch this if it didn’t have Satoshi/Ash. I might watch to see how it goes though.

  8. ^I heard from many that DP was a huge improveme…I feel like I commented about this subject before.

I’m not sure how much money OLM makes off Pocket Monsters, really… Though I admit I have no idea how the process works er…how much of the DVD sales go toward them? Since Pocket Monsters usually makes it to the rentals…

It’s been said that BW will move faster than the previous series, so I can’t help but be excited for it~

Haruka and Hikari are Kasumi clones? Lolno.

  9. Hehe, yea even I have no intention of watching the anime though I had hoped someone would keep me tabs about it because I am still a fan of it xD especially the manga. Yes, the manga!

Maybe you should review the movie instead? I think that’s where SOME of the talent and money goes in. Movies are pretty amazing, but the last I watched was the Jirachi one. I was at the edge of my seat XD

  10. is there a series where Ash actually becomes pokemon master? does anyone have a link on pokemon anime episodes that list down which ones are filler episodes? i nver got to see anything after gym leaders in the first pokemon…

  11. I wish they animated the manga.. At least the main character there isn’t a complete retard who doesn’t have to be reminded how to catch a damn Pokemon after 600 episodes..
