To be honest, I’m beginning to get a bit bored with this series. You could see that this episode was really trying to be sad here, but to me it still felt like it was missing something. If you guys aren’t going to let me drop Katanagatari, then be prepared that I’m going to stop blogging this series after the start of the Autumn season in favour of a more interesting series.
It’s not like this series is becoming unbearable to blog in the same way as Kimi ni Todoke, and this show is nowhere near bad, but I am getting rather tired of it. Last week I blamed the side characters for this, but I don’t think that that’s everything. The reason I’m a big fan of the fantasy adventure genre is because of the creativity and variety of the really good series. And that’s something I’m missing here, with this episode being a good example: in this episode we yet again see Shion strategize about some random problem, we yet again saw Miran scheming something, and most importantly: we yet again saw Ryner battle some random mages and angst over his past.
Especially that last part is something that has been getting on my nerves. Yes, we know that the guy had a sad past, can we move on now? That boy with Alpha stigma just felt too forced. It’s like the creators went: oh, look. We killed his parents in front of his own eyes. FEEL SORRY FOR HIM. It didn’t really work for me.
This show could still turn out much better in its second half, but I just don’t trust this enough to be honest. Still, the setting is still solid, albeit unimaginative. And I can very much see it as the director’s best TV-series so far.
Rating: * (Good)
Well, from what I have heard, this series becomes really awesome in it’s second half, especially the last few volumes. Let’s see how it turns out though
I’m not sure whether to drop this or Nurarihyon. I’m veering towards Nurarihyon, because it’s nothing special but promises nothing special.
Personally I think I’ll give it a few more episodes, even if all of the episodes are starting to bleed together into the same thing repeated over and over.
Most of the other mediocre series are ending soon anyway, including Katanagatari. So it’s tougher to drop them. But I can see why others would want you to watch and summarize them, so they don’t have to watch them 🙂
I’ll be happy if drop this one instead of Katanagatari. Katanagatari is about to come to an end so it’ll be good if you give it a chance for at least another episode.
In my opinion this season so far hasn’t been outstanding in anyway… DnYnD is interesting but nothing memorable, Nurarihyon is suffering slight adaptation distillation, comedies and love comedies are simply not to my liking… I’m waiting for Shiki to end and your opinion before giving it a chance. Hopefully fall will be better.
Dropping this series for the reasons you gave seems pretty effing stupid. For one, the setting isn’t boring or generic, it’s actually pretty epic, especially when you read and learn more about it. As for the other stuff, it’s just building up the setting and characters with the adventure/problem of the week style, putting emphasis on their motivations, pasts, strengths, and weaknesses. We will start seeing longer more involved arcs as it goes on and shit starts getting real.
The next episode looks alot more interesting though
you, sir, are fucking retarded
badmouthing almost everything since more than 2 years
you know that, most of the people, are not satisfied with your fucking opinion
they are only visiting this fucking blog because of the previews
I’d say drop this series. Although I’m really enjoying this series, it is clear that your heart isn’t into it and it shows in your last 5-6 reviews of this series. It is like you are approaching each new episode with such a negative mentality that you end up focusing and nitpicking on minor stuff and make it out to be something much greater than it should when you’d normally just brush it off.
Probably best to just drop it for now and maybe come back to it at a later time.
I agree with Cerrian. It feels like you’re just nitpicking at this point. I’m not such a big fan for the political side of things, but I still felt the emotional parts were done quite well.
Defade, Cerrian: yeah, that’s what I’ve been noticing as well. I guess that I’ve been spoiled by that third episode, but I just can’t seem to find anything about the past episodes that I really liked.
hmmm…just drop…both.Denyuuden and Katanagatari.Or all three of them (plus Nurarihyon). There seems to be a LOT of interesting shows next season.
I have to agree with your review of this episode. It felt like the entire episode (with the exception of the political scenes) was devoted to reinforcing the whole Stigma prejudice thing, which had already been covered with half of the episodes thus far. I seriously hope that generic noble returns to cause major problems in the future, if just to make this episode more relevant.
From everything I have read about the light novels, Denyuuden will be an amazing ride. I think the anime has serious pacing issues – we’re at episode 11 and yet we’re still in setting-up-the-story mode.
I don’t think you should force yourself to blog it if you don’t like it. I tend to find your end of month rankings more useful than the episode reviews anyway. Your episode reviews tend to be more about opinions rather than episode summaries, and opinion is really useless since we will all have our own. And when you write about your distaste about a particular episode it comes off sounding whinny which doesn’t make for pleasant reading. So if you’re going to continue complaining about it, best thing to do is drop it.
