Kimi ni Todoke – 03

You know, I’m starting to get into this series. Or rather, I’m starting to care about the relationship between Sawako and Kazehaya, and Sawako’s quest in trying to connect with the class. I’m starting to see her desire to be liked, clashing with her desire not to be hated. On top of that, Kazehaya is finally starting to show some flaws, so I’m liking this series more and more.

But on the other side, Sawako’s facial distortions still are pretty annoying, especially when repeated over and over again. It’s a problem that a few other shoujo-series have, but ironically I ended up really liking those (Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge and Skip Beat both abused them, and yet they turned out to be great otherwise. Let’s hope that this will be the case for Kimi ni Todoke as well, though a lot still has to happen for that).

I think the next episode is going to be a major one to determine whether or not this series is going to work: it’s going to be about the first love rival for our couple. The set-up is pretty obvious: this girl is in love with Kazehaya, she doesn’t like Sawako being near him and starts spreading all sorts of rumours about her. It’s obviously a plan that’s generic and never going to work, so it’s all going to depend on the execution to make up for it.

  1. Good that youre appreciating it more… This one was actually most plain for me so far, didnt have the emotional impact of the first two, but thats probably because Im getting used to it

On the other hand, Im really worried about the upcoming love triangle stuff (if thats what it is), I hate love triangles so much, and all the misunderstandings that come with them

I wonder why anime/manga writers cant just settle for a happy lovey dovey story, they always have to inject unnecessary drama lol Id be happy here if there was no drama at all, just seeing how their relationship evolves and such

  2. I really , really want to like Kimi ni Todoke. And I’ll keep watching it hoping for it to improve.. But in the end it feels so fake, and so cliché.
It falls way below Bokura ga Ita, which is my favourite series. In Bokura ga Ita the guy wasn’t perfect. In Bokura ga Ita the girl wasn’t one-sided. Sad(w)ako doesn’t do anything but blushing for Kazehaya and whining about how scary she is, about how she wants to be friends with everyone. It’s so.. fake!

  3. @the station

So far I think the only character that comes off perfect is Sawako. Perfect in the fact that everything people think about her is untrue and she is really super nice.

Kazehaya might come off perfect but I have a feeling he has his secrets.

  4. At last, Frost expresses my own approach: forget the tension of any triangle, let’s just have the growing lovey-dovey. In addition s/he felt this was the least moving episode so far, as I did. Not that I didn’t enjoy it, just that it didn’t affect me as much as the first two did.

On the other hand, I agree with thestation that this is no Bokura ga Ita, so far. Strange, since I love the manga and this is following it fairly closely. Maybe there’s something about the pacing or writing or direction.

  5. The scene where every student came over when they were studying and then all enjoyed a heartily laughter at the end was cheesy. I don’t know I’m still sitting on the fence with this one, i don’t love nor hate it. Its seems cliche but the characters are likable.

  6. The feeling is sorta different from the manga, which is strange, since it’s following really close to it.

The love triangle isn’t really a threat. SPOILERISH The love triangles are used to progress the main pairing rather than hinder it, for example, this one with the third girl just makes Sawako realize she loves Kazehaya and Kazehaya still loves Sawako even though the other girl confessed to him. SPOILEREND.

This relationship is so pure I just can’t help but love it. There’s no thought of kissing or touching or sex or anything like that. It’s just about being together. They got all flustered over writing each other’s name. It’s cheesy, but that’s what makes it so endearing.

  7. Love the anime!!! I’m glad it won as the anime to be blog. I especially like the guitar music in the middle of the episode…it was endearing to the atmosphere.

Okay, I watched Bokura ga Ita and it was okay. It wasn’t all that great of a romance anime and I would not go back and re-watch it. It’s good but the girl and guy (being not one sided) were annoying. Their relationship was “open” and that caused problems. They were both carrying this feeling: “We want to be together but sometimes, it’s painful to be with each other that maybe it’s better to be with someone else.” I hate this sort of drama…get your heads straight! If you want to be with each other, work on it and stop doing other stuff (going off with another guy or girl) to distance the relationship.

Well…back to Kimi ni Todoke. I love Sawako already and both she and Kazehaya are not perfect. But I love their beginning romance because it’s innocent and sweet. (I agreed with Charlo above).

Even though Charlo has written a spoiler about the love triangle, I already felt like the other girl won’t be an issue. Kazehaya is totally mesmerized by Sawako.

Can’t wait for the next episode!!! ^_^

  8. I’m really feeling this anime right now :)!! It reminds me of Skip Beat for some reason unknown to me. Anyways, Cannot wiat for next episode, Hope the whole “Love Triangle” thing does not ruin the anime.

  9. I appreciated Kazehaya more because of his flaws *_*

Ah, the love triangle thing. When I was reading that part in the manga, I was fearful and expected it to follow the annoying shoujo cliches at first, but I’m happy that Kimi ni Todoke had not been like those annoying typical shoujo. So there’s nothing to worry much. Hehehehe~
