Haha! Finally an episode that doesn’t focus on Henderson, and it also was much better than the previous episodes and much less annoying. Instead, this episode develops Mildred, and pushes her character into a different direction. A nice idea, and I especially liked the moments in which nothing was said, yet we all could see how Mildred is longing for attention. Unfortunately, this episode again played out like a soap opera. The moment in which Mildred came running to Anne and the two made up was cheesy at best. This is the kind of drama you’d expect from a teenaged romantic comedy, not the World Masterpiece Theatre for God’s sake. I’m not sure how many people were following the summaries I wrote for this series, but I’m going to quit doing them. This series simply isn’t good enough for that, especially since I’m now also writing detailed summaries on GA. I can only hope that the cheese isn’t going to hop over to the Thomas family. This series is in a way like Ie Naki Ko Remi: some parts were really cheesy, but others made a huge impact on me. The big difference is that Remi was an adventure series, while Anne is slice of life. But still, Henderson is much more annoying than the worst character of Remi (which was the character that the big bad guy developed into; in the end he just became a bit too stereotypical for his own good). She’s now reached the point with me that any scene she appears in becomes annoying. Even though the past few episodes have been dramatic, you can see that this series is building up to some of the more darker parts. We know that Anne is going to have to leave the Thomas family at one point, and arrive at a new family of hers. That’s where I have my hopes on for this series. With a bit of luck she’ll also move away to a different city so that that Henderson will also disappear. At the moment, the creators are going to have to put in a lot of development to get Anne to the character she was at the start of Anne of Green Gables, so let’s see whether the creators can do this, or they become too caught up in their own cheese. Rating: (Enjoyable)]]>
You mention Ie Naki Ko Remi, in the old version, I haven’t found any particularly annoying character like we could find here and the creators knew very well how to pull the strings and to deliver every meaningful part of the novel and even beyond, they managed to create this special atmosphere that made the series stand out among the other Masterpiece Theatre series. It’s so annoying that some of the greatest Masterpiece Theatre series haven’t been subbed in english but I have still to watch the other version anyway.
Yeah, I was talking about the 1997 version, of which at least some raws are floating around. I’ve yet to see the 1977 version because the only thing I can find from it are a bunch of French dubs, and my French is terrible.
Hi psgels, don’t know if the place is right to aks you that, but I have a question: how many (and which one) of the old (and classic) WMT-series did you watch? And which one you liked the most? I remember the very first one I have seen: Heidi (Arupusu no shōjo Haiji) or Niklaas (Furandāsu no inu). Really classics. Do you ever plan to write a review about them?
Out of all of the WMTs, I’ve completed Akage no Anne, Ie Naki Ko Remi, Les Miserables and Porfy no Nagai Tabi. I’m currently watching Konnichiwa Anne, Trapp Ika Monogatari and Perrine, and I’ve seen a few episodes from Tom Sawyer, Little Princess Sara and the Family Robinson. I’m of course planning to review all of them as soon as I finish them.
Oh, and my favourite of the WMT has to be Les Miserables. It’s the series that got me a fan of the franchise aas well.
Two other series that I think are worth watching are : ” Shokoshi Cedi” and ” ” Ai no wakakusa Monogatari”, I really liked those series, but I’ve also watched ” Les misérables” and just like you psgels, it is my favorite World Masterpiece Theatre ever.
I pretty liked this episode even if you’re right ,the reconciliation between Anne and Mildred was rather silly, I didn’t picture Mildred this way, she was like ” so high and mighty” and there she bursts out in tears like that and runs towards Anne, the only girl she seemed to despise from the start , well it was kinda heartwarming but also completely unexpected at one point. I thought she was too proud of herself to react like that. But well, it was rather enjoyable and this is the episode I liked the most of this series so far.
@Psgels, thanks to your blog, I finally recognized that the animation series I used to watch when I was a child came from Japan and were made by the WMT (lol). I am in the luckily position that I understand German and the german people dubbed every WMT series until 1995 and showed them on TV. And the really did a nice job with the dubbing. Lately people are uploading some of this old anime even on youtube. Lucky! I found Akage no Anne 🙂
Anyways I look forward to your reviews. I remember Perrine and Trapp Ika Monogatari. It was fun to watch this series even though I didn’t love them so much like Furandasu no inu (I’m not sure if the transcription is correct, it is The dog of Flanders). I really want to recommend you this series. It is a heartbreaking story just thinking about it brings me to tears. Sure it is the most emotional and tragic thing I have ever seen 🙁
@windy: Oh, I loved Ai no wakakusa Monogatari and the sequel too. I really think know I have to watch Les Miserables if it should be that good 🙂
