I remember how a few years ago, the Munto OVAs also got a full fledged TV-series in order to flesh out their setting. Well that turned out to be the cheapest way out: they just recapped the OVas 1 on 1 and slapped some flimsy conclusion at the end with some sequel bait, which was removed at the movie of the thing… Kyousogiga however is the complete opposite: with this series, newcomers to the franchise aren’t left out at all, and know right away that they need to go for the TV-series that has everything in it, and they managed to stuff everything in really well.
Also, unlike the previous episodes, this episode tells three stories at once: one third of the episode is about monk guy, one third about the scientist girl (also including episode 2 of the OVA) and the third part is about the present, which also ties the abovementioned two together perfectly so that this episode becomes more than just three mini-episodes packed together.
My favourite part was about the monk, though. I did not expect a character like him, who always was in the background, to gain so much depth. It’s quite astounding to see how much the creators did in so little time with this guy, but I love how this series is really trying to give depth to its entire cast. It really makes the setting also come alive.
Also, here’s another thing: am I the only one who noticed that most anime are quite lazy when it comes to aging characters? I mean, make characters a bit bigger, their hair a bit longer or shorter, and voila. Here, it took me a while to link the two monks to their younger versions: they really grew up and changed significantly, but parts of their childhood remained. A small but very clever detail.

Ahh I loved this episode, and I love the character building. Definitely my favourite of the new season so far.
I’m so confused with the characters though, and would like to clarify
there’s the drawing monk, and the black rabbit who borrows the body of a goddess.
The drawing monk adopts a boy myoue and draws two demon characters, head monk and galaxy in her eyes flouncy dress lady
Then there’s a second Koto with a hammer, and she had a sensei, who is also her father, who is also the drawing monk??? And Koto with the hammer mother is koto the black rabbit??
scientist lady, and scientist dude, are not from the mirror world but got sucked in from somewhere else.
Then there’s An and Un, who are zappy pokemon like characters who also changes into boys in fact wtf are they?
I think that An and Un are Koto’s familiars. The fox mask guy had familiars too, and they looked similar except they were black and white instead of pink and blue. I’m guessing they just come with the job of working at the Shrine.

Well, if we take pv as canon and will be included in an episode later, lady koto’s comeback and meet with koto does destroy the mirror capital.
But don’t worry, they won’t make it in grim-derp-ness feeling like evangelion. Probably after some destruction, the city will recover itself and everyone is happy again.
This anime is the surprise of the season for me. I saw the potential in the OVAs, but they never grabbed me. I was iffy about this series, but decided to give it a shot and it has slowly entered my top 5 of the season. Here’s hoping it gets even better.
Sorry, maybe it is because I haven’t watched the OVA’s but I find the character confusion to be a FLAW. Sure it’s OK to keep the audience guessing, but for me it detracts a lot from the series that half the time you have no clue what’s going on.
I still don’t understand why people think this series confusing as hell while it is straight as hell. Do they enjoy something like Kill La Kill too much that when watching something that need little brain effort they find it confusing?
This is what character relationship look like without watching onas:
Episode 1:
1. A monk married with a drawing rabbit and got 3 children
2. They run to mirror city due to fear of persecution by the shrine
3. Later, the parent have to quit from the city due to a prophetic dream that they will destroy the city.
Episode 2:
1. Koto’s master is also her father, and she call the black rabbit drawing her mother. Add 2+2 together, her father and mother is the 3 siblings parent, which means she is the 4th child.
Episode 3:
1. Kurama -the first son- has underlings from shrine. The very same kind of people threatened their family in the past. Why they can work together indeed still mystery.
Episode 4:
No new character’s relationship revealed.
Honestly though, people don’t understand episode 2 and keep spouting koto is the reincarnation of the rabbit is what make me questioning anime watcher’s brain capacity.
