So, it’s time for the penultimate episodes again. Starting with Psycho Pass, which pretty much showed an example of such an episode done right. This definitely was a story headed towards its climax with the country at stake, but at the same time it never stopped developing its characters. In fact, it’s this episode where a lot of the characters come together, and get pushed further.
And this is for nearly the entire cast here. It’s because of this that the death scene made impact. Everyone can kill off a character near the end of a series. Making such a death count is an entirely different matter, but that is exactly what Psycho Pass did with Nobuchika here, and his relationship with the other enforcers. It fitted perfectly onto the buildup that he has had for the past episodes. But also Akane really surprised me as a really strong character. Plus Makishima Shougo again demonstrates what it’s like to be an actually good villain here. Yay!
Now that the series is nearly over, I’d say that Psycho Pass for me ranks above Blassreiter, Fate/Zero and Madoka Magica as a Gen Urobuchi series, and below Phantom. Although out of all his stories, I do think that this is the strongest. Blassreiter mostly stood out through its CG. Fate/Zero had some pacing issues (which to me, Psycho Pass didn’t really have that much…), and it’s longer than Madoka Magica, allowing it to put more detail into its setting. Phantom had a weaker story, but its characters still made it as my favorite Urobuchi Gen series.
And yeah, it’s a shame. But in a week we’ll have no more Noitamina for the next three months. Bummer.

I don’t really see that. I still think that Akane’s sudden jarring change from incompetent to master detective warranted more development. I also wouldn’t call the characters well developed. They fit well into the story but you can see Gen pulling the character strings to fit his narrative. Also don’t get why hacker girls past was important to see either.

Sigh…if find that ranking off. I can give you leeway on Fate/zero due to lack of information and even a type/moon fanatic such as myself has begun to notice some chinks in it’s armour. PP is better than Blassreiter. But I would rate Madoka over this. Madoka may have been shorter but did everything really well for it’s runtime.(Still find the ending disappointing but it doesn’t bug me as much) PP on the other hand had some average moments and even now there seems to be signs of padding with more than three episodes which consist mostly of just two people talking. And Gen’s exposition is quite weak here as he is literally spelling everything out for us instead of letting us make our own deductions. Phantom I would put in the same place as PP but I would place both below Fate/zero and Madoka. Reiji had missed opportunity for development and for the most part he spend the show whining about how he’s a killer and killing is wrong and blah blah blah. Ein was basically a Rei Ayanami character. All and all the characters were pretty weak. It was more the positions they were in that made it interesting.
Regarding madoka I think we should remember Juno said theres going to be some differences in the third movie. Maybe they can fix up the ending somehow. As for Blassreiter I also recall Juno saying that Gen wasn’t as much involved in that one as the other stuff he did .
With fate/zero I think I’d put that above his other anime stuff, even I can admit as someone who isn’t all that into Gen’s works that when fate/zero shined it really did(although in the end it was only an okay series for me, Rider and Waver really made it for me), pacing/exposition/prior knowledge issues aside.
what character development lol? This has one of the worst developed anime cast I have seen in a while. Akane has been completely fucked over with. PP OVER MADOKA AHAHAHAHAHAHHA. Madoka is far superior dont even fuck with me.

uhhh Madoka’s chracters are as 2D as shit too… They have no personalities of their own. Madoka is a goode two shoes, Homura is a loner who befriends Madoka, Sayaka is an ordinary girl with a crush… Please tell me how the character development is better in Madoka.
None of you get it. Urofapper stories are not meant to have characters. His “characters” in are just plot devices at the best of times, stage props at the worst. Their only purpose is to be checkpoints of sorts, each one a conduit he uses to philosofap his hollow “message” or “statement” to society.
Blassreiter standing out with its CG, eh kinda wasn’t too keen on the animation in that one to be honest. As for Noitamina, I’m still not sold its a suitable timeslot for science fiction anime.

One of the reasons I’m going on about sci-fi anime in noitamina is that it clashes with the established audience who go for drama, romance and slice of life.
yeah but I read that those types of shows werent helping the time slot so they were like “lets get the cool teenager gangs to watch psycho pass and be all fully sick bro”.
Actually, the established audience has always been more than that. The timeslot has always been experimental. The third Noitamina series ever made was a really experimental horror series with Ayakashi. The fourth? Jyu Oh Sei, which is fantasy combined with Science fiction. Some of the biggest hits of the genre in terms of viewer ratings have been both drama (Nodame Cantabile, Moyashimon) and experimental horror (Mononoke, Hakaba Kitarou).
Also Airies, I know you don’t like the series and all, but you’re not making any sense and sound like an idiot right now. Please stop.
I had forgotten ayakashi, jyu-oh-sei. hakaba, N06 and mononoke were Noitamina. Guess I was focusing too much on my favourites like Nodame, honey and clover, pardise kiss and hourou Musoko there and the others jumped my mind.

Hey, we can’t forget Tatami Galaxy which was probably one of the best Noitamina series (and the best in my mind).
Psycho-Pass is one of my favorites of the winter season, but it doesn’t reach Fate/Zero levels for me, due to the amazing contrast between Kirei and Kuritsugi.
Makisjima and Kougami are great antagonists, but they’re way too similar to one another in their conflict.
Where Kirei was a safist and Kuritsugu was the ultimate consequentialist, Makishima seems a anarchist without a theory of the ideal community and Kougami is motivated by revenge, while pretending it is all about justice, uncritically adopted from Sybil.
While F/Z had pacing issues, they’re offset by its greater scope or ambitions. Psycho-Pass is a strange scifi that somewhat forgot its genre, for the same of character development in Tsunemori’s case. Thus PP is less consistent or coherent as a whole than F/Z’s paean to nihilism.

But damn Urobuchi Gen is a fantastic writer. Everything he touches turns to literary gold. I need to read Saya no Uta one of these days.
