Some Quick First Impressions: Doki Doki Precure!

Dokidoki Precure

Short Synopsis: Our lead character gets to be a mahou shoujo.
My big issue with Precure: there is so much of it! I’m not going to devote so much time to it, unless it’s really good, like what happened to Heartcatch Precure. Now, did Dokidoki’s first episode reach the same level as Heartcatch’s first episode? No. For me it lacks the fresh emotional touch and the energy that I noticed there. However, I am positive about this episode and it stands out among the better ones. For once, the lead female is not a ditzy airhead anymore (seriously, there were too many characters in precure like that…). Okay, she still is incredibly naive, but her resourcefulness at least is a start! If I have to be honest though, with the current execution, I do not think that I will continue with this series. I miss emotions. I miss some passion. The characters may develop well, but I do not want to be bored while waiting for that. The current pacing… I think that I will get bored.
OP: Not the worst, but also not that good of an OP.
ED: You’re still not done with those crappy CG dance EDs?
Potential: 50%

    1. Truth. I love the EDs. I devote a 20 min. workout session every week to nothing but Pretty Cure dances. COOLEST KID ON THE INTERNET RIGHT HERE.

    2. WAAAAAAAHT and I just watched this one and it is a huge Gambalance de Dance (Splash Star ED as in the first ED that was a dance) throwback.

  1. actully this season pretty diffrent then all the outhers becouse we never had a cure leader that is student concuil prezident even at heartcatch and also the way she got the item is diffrent then all the seasons until now and the big diffrent is the monsters can talk a lot and not say one word

      1. I read they even want to continue for 20 years….

Well anyway, I thought the Episode wasn’t bad. I didn’t immediately dislike any of the characters (like in most of the other precure seasons). The opening sequence (I mean before the song) was nice, but reminded me a bit of heartcatch. I will continue watching dokidoki for now and see how it will develop. It has a few interesting aspects, but it really depends on the following episodes, if they can deliver.

Since the Monsters this time are the selfish thoughts of humans, it may develop into a healing series like heartcatch. I like that. I loved that in HC as well.

It seems like the purple one was the last Precure of some sorts, so I want the series properly explain what happened to the others (or did I remember something wrong?) This is one of the interesting aspects. It also offers potential for interesting character development for the purple one. I hope they don’t just develop her in one episode, but throughout the series.

The pink one also hopefully develops. Since she does everything on her own, I hope she fails at some point of the story. Please don’t let her be someone who really can accomplish everything. BECAUSE she is portrayed so “perfect”, she needs to fail.

Uhm, yeah, so I hope they don’t do “just another” boring Precure Show with this. Smile wasn’t that bad, but I got bored by it after 10 episodes. So I’ll probably give this series a 10 Episodes chance as well.

      2. Actually, even if his beginning was pretty ininspired, Smile was one of the best season of Precure with fantastic action and enormous amount of fun and parody.

psgels, you should have try the wrong precure (except heartcatch). You’ve tried Allstar movie 2 and Suite. Suite is the worst series with Yes5 (but the movies of Yes5 are fabulous) and Allstar 2 is near to be the worst Precure movie.

Try Splashstar, Futari wa or allstar 1 or Yes5 movie . you will see that the series can be really good.

But don’t await from theses series something similar to Heartcatch.

Heartcath was a mix between Magical Doremi and Saint seiya, the other Precure are different:

        For Futari wa and Splashstar:
a mix between oldschool magical girl (Momo/Creamy/Emi) and DBZ

        For the other seasons:
A mix between sailormoon and DBZ.

Don’t really await emotionnal moment in Precure(Heartcath have this because of the saint seiya and doremi touch). There is only 3 thing in Precure:

1.DBZ action with pretty good animation
2.Slice of life (very good in Futari wa and Splashstar, the best with Heartcatch)
        3.fun moment

        1. That’s the issue. If HeartCatch is the only one with the qualities we are looking for, and the rest have merits we… don’t understand as much, then HeartCatch will be the only thing that catches our interest.

  2. I remember picking up Heartcatch around the time Sunshine appeared and catching up a couple of weeks before the finale. I really liked it: great action, funny scenes, nice messages for the kids and a couple of characters had great stories (I admit I skipped like 5 or 6 episodes I knew were fillers, though) but since then I’ve had no motivation to watch another Precure, even when I almost pick up Smile because the characters looked funny. Anyway, I’ll wait to see how people (including those in this blog) react at Doki Doki to decide if I keep watching this.

  3. psgels, I suggest give it two more episodes and if its not impressing you then give up (I WISH YOU WOULDNT BUT I KNOW YOUD HAVE TO).

  4. I actually found this episode to be so much better than smile and suites first ep. from the get go I was like fuck this I dont want the best friends to be fighting and dont even care about them and when I saw smile I just knew it would be dumb. This however was quite exciting, it didnt start at school or was the first day of school for the mc, it was an interesting field trip. I really liked how cure sword did that epic backflip lol just thought I’d mention. I think the best thing about this ep was that mana wasnt afraid at all, in every precure series to date the maiin character/s have been like what the fucks going on which is a normal reaction but mana was different, she lectured a crab, befriended a strange pink bunny, tried to be friends with cure sword and transformed just because she was told. I found this really interesting to me because this is a form of naivety that has been shown in the precure series. Also the animation is a step up from suite and smiles and i think this is because the transformation sequence wasnt as full on as it was in the other shows, it kinda just happened and didnt feel like there was a drop of quality after.

  5. I think the main thing that attracted me to Heartcatch was how down to earth the series was with its characters, instead of the caricatures in most anime (and of course the awesome fight scenes :P). Judging from the super accomplished student council president, super rich character and the super famous idol already introduced as main characters, I don’t think we’ll be getting that down to earth-ness in this series :/

  6. Well, I’ve gotten up to episode 12 of “Futari wa PreCure” recently. I thought the beginning of the series was horrid, but episode 8 changed my mind on that with a powerful development.
From there, I watched episode one of DokiDoki and thought it was quite cheesy, but better than Futari’s first episode. Not sure I like the attitude it has, though. It could go anywhere from here…

…But then I watched HeartCatch episode one. I was iffy about the designs of the characters… and yet, I’m already attached. For the first time in a long time, I’ve memorized the names of the main characters by the first episode. I think I will love this one.

  7. Actually, I prefer the beginning of Splashstar than Futari wa. the design is better, the character more lovable. they show us some of the better slice of life TV show I ever see (with Tamayura, Sakura and Pastel Yumi)

Futari wa slice of life is also far better than the one during the 9 firt ep of Heartcatch(Heartcatch was not really good between the episode 3 and 10, I watched the show only for Erika and the element showed during the 1 and 2)

  8. DokiDoki had some issues, but also had best music, great character art style and had the most mature theme. Also Mana. I know there’s a lot of hate, but Cure Heart & Cure Peach are my favorite leads – their empathy and love knows no bounds.
