Yozakura Quartet – Hana no Uta – 03

Having superpowered characters who are really hard to kill does take away a bit of the tension, but it fits strangely wellin the light-hearted tone of these past episodes. This episode was about the background of some of the characters here, and the nature of the setting of this series. The villain only made an appareance like, once or something?

But yeah, this was solid build-up, because we now have a good grasp on who the main character is like, having bascially the responsibilit of sending demons to this unknown dimension that might not even exist, basically potentially killing them: that’s great conflict, and this episode cleverly showed us how he chose to deal with this by holding out on this until the last moment, and first showing all of the different sides to the issue.

Also, there was that scene with the car that came out of bloody nowhere. That really grabbed my attention for a bit due to how raw the action was. This show is really light, with these sudden dark spots inbetween, and it mixes really well. However, the creators do need to be building up for something: this light hearted stuff is fine and all, but only for build-up. Stuff needs to actually get darker after a while. If only because that will show more opportunities for the animators to work their magic.
Rating: 5/8 (Great)

  1. That scene with the car gave me a definite mood whiplash. Having never been exposed to Yozakura Quartet before, I was definitely a bit disoriented until we settled into the part b section with Akina. The results of a car scene like that are not typically shown. I do think we’re establishing the relationship between the primary trio and their primary support characters before we move on to the greater intrigues. Indeed the relationship between the brother and sister seem essential to understanding the dynamic of demons in this world.

  2. This show is fucking great, I’m not sure I can say much else. The car part was pretty intense, though personally, I’d love that kind of power and strength.

Serious or not, I’m enjoying the hell out of this anime.

  3. I dunno. As someone who has never been exposed to Yozakura Quartet before, I can’t help but feel that the characters are really underdeveloped. How much can we say we really know about them at this point? They’re juggling too many characters around and as a result, we don’t really get to know any of them. Even with the focus given to Akina and Kyousuke, i don’t feel like I learned much about them.

And that car scene? It makes the setting feel like it has no consequences. Why should I care that Touka crushed these kids to near death when they are 100% fine 30 seconds later. With all the blood you’d think that she killed them and then next scene they’re fine.

That said, I’m still willing to stick it out a few more episodes, but I’m quickly losing interesting. Plus the fanservice is really poorly done.

  4. The kids have just been reset. Which equals to non story-telling.

The villain is a joke. Bouncing fishes come on…

This is just a collection of cool animation sequences, cheap food jokes and cheap fanservice.

It shifts from very light to very dark, from childish to hentai. There is no story and no character depth.

    1. Yea, base the main villain off episode 1 when he was playing around. That is perfectly logical. Also, if we were further into the series then your last line might actually be true, but at this point stop saying things that may also be entirely false.

  5. Actually, the car scene happened because the fox villain is messing around with it. It is hinted by the nurse at the end of episode.
