Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge: Nabeshin’s latest work. Four bishounen get to live in a huge mansion, on the condition that they can make the owner’s niece (who is the worst gothic horror-freak possible) into a lady. It’s sense of humour is based on energy. Lots and lots of energy, and over-the-top dialogues. Obviously, the entire concept of bishounen is made ridiculous. Few series can claim to have as much energy as this one, and the result turned out hilarious, though it’s got a few problems.
One thing this anime did right was its characters. There’s basically one bad character, but apart from him all characters are fleshed out and made more than just 2-dimensional ones. Polar opposites have always worked well together, and the four most good-looking guys, combined with a gothic-horror freak can hardly move further apart. This combination makes sure that the laughs keep coming, especially with this series’ sense of humour. Just when the humour starts to become stale, the characters start to develop and get fleshed out, making this hilarious till the end, with perhaps only the middle section a little weak. Heck, even the final episode delivers; something only few comedies can claim.
The graphics and music are both something incredibly subjective, though. They’ll make you either love or hate this series. The fact remains that almost the entire soundtrack, especially around the climax, consists of fast-paced rock, to help this anime create its energy. If you’re more of a j-pop fan, or like silent music, this will be hard to swallow. The art is also something you’d easily find ugly, and even though the main characters are supposed to be extremely attractive, they don’t look that way and I suspect that Nabeshin went for the concept of ‘suspense of belief” with them. Personally, I didn’t mind the art, and I loved the soundtrack, but people can easily dislike them, so don’t expect any Lucky-Star-like art here. The only really bad thing about the art is that the main female lead, Sunako, is way too often portrayed as a chibi-figure, while her normal character-art looks (ironically) beautiful.
For me, Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge was a huge success as a comedy, despite five or six weak episodes around the middle part. Some of these episodes liked to use a reset-button as well when characters made huge amounts of money, which I didn’t like either. I definitely recommend this series, though, because I loved the over-the-top-ness of this series, along with all the methods to make the bishounen-stereotype ridiculous.]]>

what seriously? such a high score, I saw the first ep I got turned off by some of the jokes that failed, characters that didn’t really stand out, and ugly animation so I understand why ouran is so much more popular…. well I haven’t seen all, only seen first ep; sort of a bad impressions.
Well, it’s all a matter of taste. It’s like I said, you’ll either like or hate the character-designs. For me, Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge was much more enjoyable than Ouran.
Personally I like it and agree with the chibi comment. Though her “normal” form could be beautiful, she is supposed to be lacking in the hygiene and style departments. Part of the humor is that she is a beauty when she wants to be, but that is usually when she is causing pain or destroying things.
Given that the series has definitely set up for her and Kyouhei to eventually pair, the thought of them as a couple is fairly terrifying. To borrow from another genre they would be Jim and Angelina diGriz, or Brad and Angelina in “Mr and Mrs Smith”.
i have just finished watching the entire episodes and i could say that ouran is much much much more enjoyable compared to this one… first it lacks plot development… though full of hilarious jokes, i cant help but think that the anime is really going to nowhere until that final episode…
Well, it’s not like Ouran was full of plot development either. I mean, the finale was quickly introduced and rushed, while in Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge it at least made a bit of sense.
I love the anime, Its unique! It portrays a reality that what comes out from peoples mouth nay affect other peoples point of view in life sometimes. I love the charaters also, the hot tempered Kyouhei and the weird sunako

The thing you’ve got to remeber about the plot is the anime didn’t get very far into the Manga story. There is a lot more development this is why I hope for a second season. All and all this was one of the funniest sereis I have ever seen. It was all very differnt. I really liked the music as well.

There are 25 episodes… however the manga consist of 19 volumes with 80 episodes.
This anime is one of the best I’ve watched so far. I really like Sunako’s character as well as Kyouhei. I think they’re superb since they’re not like those typical characters who portrays overkill feminity and masculinity (particularly Sunako). She’s that one chick who does not rely of herself being a girl but likes to be independent above anyone else. Kyouhei’s character, on the other hand, much to my surprise, relies on his abilities and not on his looks- which makes his personality interesting.

I think Yamato Nadeshiko should be viewed as a unique manga, different from Ouran though definitely with the some similarities…there’s the reverse harem concept which the Japanese seem to be quite comfortable with.
Sunako is atypically female in that she loves blood and gore. Haruhi is more intellectual, more confident, but no less lovable. Both Sunako and Haruhi are quite independent, romantically dense, and have strong opinions about everything.
Comparing the two mangas / anime I believe, would be a mistake…just as comparing a woman to some other woman makes no sense. What would be one’s term of reference when both these female roles do not fit your stereotypical female roles? Both characters are just great.
