Uragiri wa Boku no Namae wo Shitteiru – 14

This series has this really strange tendency to introduce all kinds of powers from out of nowhere, and then acting like it’s the most normal thing in the world. I mean, hello?! A rabbit just turned into a catgirl here! Couldn’t at least act a bit surprised?

Either way though, as an aftermath this episode was pretty damn good. It was all about solidifying the characters’ relationships against each other: everyone talked about their issues to each other, and quite a few disagreements were either settled, or accepted. After watching quite a few series in which people just refuse to talk to each other, seeing how honest this episode was was quite a refreshment.

Especially Luka surprised me, and the way with which he has accepted the current situation. He’s had plenty of time to sort out his own feelings, and ended up deciding to support Yuki, whatever she ends up with. The episode ended with the promise of back-story, so I’m actually quite interested in this show at this point.

The angst in this series feels like it’s done right for once, compared to, say, Vampire Knight angst. While angsting, the characters really are thinking about themselves and the influence they have on others, compared to, say, how much they hate or love a certain character. I have to give the manga author that: these characters are well thought out, and the anime staff did quite a good job at bringing this to life.
Rating: * (Good)

  1. I never minded Sodom in the manga but in the anime he is so annoying!

I liked this episode too. Pure character development. They did an excellent job of adapting these scenes from the manga, but still showing it through another creator’s vision.

The one time I raised my eyebrow was at the very end. For those who are curious, since it hasn’t been translated into English yet: it became a weird amalgam of a scene in chapter 36 (Yuki gives Luka an amulet saying he couldn’t figure out his birthstone, but hopes this helps/ps “I feel bad I can’t do more for you than this”) and a scene at the end of 21 where he brushes aside Luka’s hair and is baffled by how beautiful and otherworldly he seems, and says it makes him remember something, and he’s felt this kind of atmosphere with Luka before. Then as they are practically about to kiss, Luka pulls Yuki’s hand away because he catches Tachibana peeping on them. Tachibana goes “don’t worry I am just a plant!”

Kind of disappointing they cut out the comedy and the height of the romance. Also that they blended these scenes because the one in chap 36 is funny and romantic too, particularly after Yuki’s comment about not being useful.

I can only imagine they toned down the boys love to appeal to a wider audience, but this is still so amazingly shoujo I wonder why they’d need to appeal to people who aren’t down with that and the various sub-genres it normally covers?

  2. Oh~ in manga Yuki and the rest of the crews got a shock of their life seeing Sodom in that cat girl body! And plus the explianation that Sodom wanted to talk to Yuki like others, so he tried to turn into human. (and just sucessfully did so)

Agree with Lane… somehow they tried to insert more role for Sodom making it pointless and annoying…

Yeah nevertheless this anime overall is good. I’m a fan-girl and I feel they’ve done pretty well in toning down BL factors to appeal to more viewers without sucking the story. But toning down the humour factors which is the crucial part of characters’ personalilty is unacceptable!! I meant come on they are not always depressed!! Example Shusei is not that always sad guy… he actually likes picking on Hotsuma! If follow the manga, this episode would shown Shusei called Hotsuma a pervert for roughly pulling his shirt like this and demanded Hotsuma to sew back the buttons… and Hotsuma was like a puppy being scolded by his master. Tsukumo love giving out snacks to people out of sudden to cheer people up.

  3. It’s really a bit unfortunate that they’re leaving out those small humorous parts, as they really give the characters something.
Especially in that scene with Hotsuma and Shusei.
But I think, the anime creators nevertheless did a really good job and the story works so far.

Oh, on a side note… I didn’t feel that Sodom was annoying. Of course he felt a bit flat, because it is neither mentioned that he tried to change into human form to be able to talk to Yuki (and actually didn’t completely succeed, thus the ears and the tail), nor his little escapades later on, when he even in human form continues to act like the little puppy he is, not listening to what his master says and e.g. ending up stuck high up in a tree because of that when he goes searchiung for shiny things (he’s a dragon afterall and they like shiny things).

Yet I didn’t think he was unnecessary or annoying, he was kinda cute nevertheless. I had expected much worse after what I had read here.
(and yes, I think Sodom is a boy not a girl)

Now I only hope that they will include some of the information that they skipped in this episode in the next one, as I think some of it is quite important. Especially Yuki’s resolve conerning Kanata-san and some thoughts he has about Takashiro.

(and I definitely have to get my hands on volume 5&6 soon, so I can continue reading the manga original! *runs to the next bookstore to buy it*)

  4. i wanna know if there is uragiri wa boku no namae o shitteiru 2 cuz it has number 2 but i don’t know the name of number 2 plz can someone tell me it or where can i fnd it 🙂

  5. I thought the point of the scene with Sodom is to remind the audience of Yuki’s Mary Sue like appeal to the members of the darkside. I mean we see the guardians talk about the basis of their love for Yuki and it makes sense. Yuki heals and sustains them. It is natural that they love him for it. But what of Yuki’s affect on Luka and Reiga? The author isn’t ready to tell us where it comes from but the author wants us to know for a fact it is there and that it is powerful. Sodom, wants to talk to Yuki and is moved to use a power he has never used before and that power manifests amazingly. It is amazing that he is able to achieve a human form on his first attempt. However, the manifestation of power is not perfect, he still has ears and a tail. Think of that time that Yuki and Kanata spent together what desire will prompt which imperfect power there?
