Uchuu Kyoudai – 19

Good lord, Sharon. Do you really mean to teach two young boys about cooking by using a large sharp cooking knife on top of a wooden table?!That poor table!

Also, this episode did what I thought was impossible: it added even more depth to Mutta by revealing even more of his past. I mean, his aunt Sharon was bound to be special with that observatory of her and all, but when this episode revealed who she really was, it put even more pieces of the puzzle together: because of her influence, Hibito was able to go into space, and the two siblings were probably invited into JAXA, able to attend all these lectures.

I love how for Mutta, she was the most normal thing in the world: he knew a famous person, but he pretty much didn’t know any better because the only space fanatic he grew up with was his own brother, Hibito. This was a really charming episode that allowed him to finally talk to people with the same passions as he had.

Revealing these things only at this stage of the series also has a very nice side-effect: the characters actually had lives before the start of this series. This show doesn’t just have an obligatory background arc, but instead is full of anecdotes of who Mutta and Hibito were when they grew up. This really gives the illusion that they had witnessed a lot of different things already, compared to most leads out there where the background just comprises of one or two key events in their past, and nothing else.
Rating: 5.5/8 (Excellent)

  1. Finally catched up with this series: The wait for next episode is now killing me. Mutta is a great character in every way.

  2. In the beginning I had really high hopes for this show, but after 19 episodes it’s turned out to be about as exciting as watching paint dry.

    1. Why are you here then, go watch some shonen series where heroes scream their hearts contents out while cracking down on their opponents with exciting super powers and mumbling stuff about the power of friendship .. sigh XD

And watching paint dry can be exciting by the way XD

      1. The level of ignorance that this posts displays is astounding. I could care less about the shonen type shows that you so “eloquently” described.

Newsflash…. not everyone has to agree with your opinion. I know that is going to be a hard one for your ego, but it is the truth.

  3. I think this was a great episode. I suppose it struck a note in me, in regards to being interested in a subject no one else is. It is somewhat a feeling of loneliness or isolation – having a fond interest no one else is inclined to understand or interested in. For me, it is mathematics. You play soccer and tumble around as an ordinary kid, yet you can talk to no one about that which you care deeply for. The feeling of pride when you solve or prove a theorem. And then… bam! Suddenly comes a situation where you actually get to spend time with people who share the same interests as you, who understand you, who you can talk to and relate to. For me it was the university.

Though, psgel, I must admit that I do not think that Sharon helped hem any other way than simply being there as guidance and encouragement. Mutta got there on his own prowess, as-well as Hibito. It was my understanding that those lectures were public, meant to encourage public interest. As such they simply took advantage of the open door policy of JAXA. I kind of dislike the idea that Sharon would have helped them with some backhanded dealings, since it seems fairly unfair. And so far this show has gone to great lengths to be fair to all characters. Apart from the headbutting episode everyone has gotten equal opportunity.
