Tiger & Bunny – 14

This was a really silly episode, but I absolutely loved it. The humour was exactly what this series needed after the previous arc, but most importantly: timeskip!

this episode was a riot to watch, but on top of that it contained a ton of character development because we skipped 10 months forward. Bison, Blue Rose, Tiger, Barnaby: they all changed, and it was awesome. The trust between the main duo is finally complete and got the chance to mature a bit, Bison changed to the resident loser and especially Blue Rose’s crush on Tiger gave an interesting twist to her character. Usually it’s nothing special when a girl falls in love with the main character and all, but Tiger & Bunny has never been a romantic comedy: it was immediately established that Kotetsu had a dead wife and a daughter and so far the creators never hinted at Blue Rose liking him so far: this was no love at first sight like you see at nearly every series, but instead it’s only something that grew over the course of the past episodes. As character development it fits great into this series.

Also, the comedy. The villain f this episode was hilarious, but especially the way in which he turned out to be that stand-in for Barnaby that was once used had me in stitched. Because of that the chase at the end of the episode was a really entertaining one, and Tiger’s powers getting wonky made it even better. His powers are changing, and yet this series has never shown anything like this before (the closest I guess was Jake getting two powers). There has to be a catch beyond simply “his powers are evolving”.
Rating: *** (Awesome)

  1. “the creators never hinted at Blue Rose liking him so far”

Oh boy psgels, you’re almost as dense as Kotetsu.
I likes this episode a lot (I didn’t liked the end of the previous arc so much). Who knows what Kotetsu’s powers are going to bring up (at one point during the third PV he says “do you want me to quit being an hero?”). We’ll also probably see more of Uroborous, I don’t think Jake and the puppet girl were the only members.

  2. My bet is that he’s gonna lose his powers by the end of the series. strange that his eyes changed from blue to brown during the episode.

  3. @Bilum: All of the heroes eyes are blue when they are using their powers. Unless you were indicating something else… ::needs to re-watch episode::

Ah, and I have to agree with Ctyl, here. There have been obvious hints that Karina has liked Kotetsu since episode 7, and there were even slight ones in episode 4.

So, this episode was expected somewhere along the way, as was Kotetsu’s automatic daughter-zoning. Still, I really adore how they handled Karina’s crush, they did a good job on it, and I’m really liking the new dynamics that have showed up after the time skip.

Sadly, a lot of the fandom is giving Barnaby a hard time right now. Before this episode they wanted to see more of Barnaby praising Kotetsu and being more deredere towards him, now that they have their wish, they want him to go back to being a bit snarky and tsuntsun towards Kotetsu. Poor Barnaby can never win!

Anyway, I liked were they went with this episode, and thought it was a well done mash up of a breather episode, a catch-up episode, and even a bit of a recap episode. They handled it well. I also enjoyed how this one was more of a character development episode (it was especially great to see some more of Antonio), and I laughed a lot throughout it.

And, while I’m sure that this episode will end up connecting at one point with a later episode, like this series has been prone to do, for right now I just enjoyed it. I didn’t really think about the big picture or overarching plot, though I do think that while Jake is dead, the Ouroboros factor isn’t quite over and done yet.

I’m also a bit worried, though fascinated, by where they are going to go with Kotetsu and his powers evolving.

I loved the new OP and ED and the new OP also seems to indicate that the next half of this series is going to focus more on Kotetsu, which pleases me just fine.

Though, I really am looking forward to next week’s episode. Keith centered = I am totally there!

  4. it is simple, Tiger just increases the power but it drains the time he can use them, the increment is probably exponential so if the time lowers to half he could be like 10 or 20 times faster and stronger. I bet the next great villian will be extremely powerful so they have to buff at least 2 or 3 heroes.

  5. Yeah, the crush Blue Rose had on Tiger was hinted as early as the blue rose episode and could be some in that episode when you saw her reaction when she found out that Tiger has a child and had a wife.

  6. I thought the same as Redfactor. It seems like Tiger’s acquiring an overdrive like ability that ramps up his power while drastically depleting his energy reserves. I like that sort of power up since it has a real cost-benefit sort of component as opposed to the Bleach-DBz esque straight power ups.

And yah, Blue Rose. You could see some sort of attraction but the thought of “High school girl x 30 something dude? That’s jailbait!” and most probably assumed it wouldn’t go there. I guess we all under estimated Japan’s penchant for putting up minors as the objects of desire for grown men *Cough* Speed Grapher, Witch Hunter Robin

  7. Well, there are a few ways Kotetsu’s powers could go here:

    1. His powers could simply be evolving and are becoming more powerful, but because of that his powers don’t last as long.

    2. He could be gaining a secondary power along with his Hundred Power. So, to compensate for that, his Hundred Power is lasting for a shorter amount of time, though it is also more powerful.

    3. Kotetsu could actually be losing his powers.

Personally, I think the third option would be the most interesting to divulge into and would also fit in better with the “you want me to quit being a hero?” line that was said in the third PV.

Who knows though, Tiger and Bunny has done a good job of keeping me guessing, which I like. 🙂

  8. @syncronized….. thats not Jail bait in some countries…and Japan (as long as you dont live in Tokyo and Kanagawa)

The age of consent of something like 15 or whatever, and in some European countries its somewhere around there as well.

Besides in Japan that shizz happens all the time, young girls with WAAAAAY older dudes.

  9. Yeah, those hints about Blue Rose seem obvious in retrospect, but it seemed so unlikely at the time that I ignored most of them when they showed up.

  10. The Blue Rose hints were obvious from the get go… there’s a nice amount of Tiger X Blue Rose fanart on pixiv (obviously it’s fuck all compared to Tiger & Barnaby….) and there’s been quite a few “shippers” of the pairing on AnimeSuki for instance.

Though I would love it to happen… I don’t really see the point in shipping them.. the day Karina hooks up with Kotetsu is the day the K-ON girls get boyfriends, it’s not going to happen.

And I’m not even factoring age and his dead wife into that. Call me jaded and cynical but you don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

  11. I laughed out load during this episode. It was really good. I too think Tiger’s powers are increasing in strength, but shortening in the time he can use it. Anyhoo, I liked how they tied in everything about Tiger helping others mostly unintentionally.
