Tiger & Bunny – 06

Okay, so the title of this episode seemed to suggest that it would be an episode about Fire Emblem; it wasn’t. It’s instead about a villain who also uses fire as a weapon. Of course Fire Emblem did make many appearances in this episode, and even though we didn’t get to know anything about his past, he only got more adorable through is antics.

Instead, we got ourselves a major villain. His introduction was a great one: usually when a main villain gets introduced, he just appears in one shot, trying to look cool. This guy immediately succeeded in making himself into a threat by linking him to Barnaby’s past, having him brutally kill previous villains and by by making his flames far more effective than the fire user of the group. This show has a lot with people with the same powers.

The chemistry between the characters is still amazing. Especially the interplay between Tiger and Bunny is great, and this episode also showed Tiger and Fire Emblem together, and they too make a great combo with each other. I especially love how the creators also aren’t afraid to build up jokes during the exciting parts, somehow succeeding not to make the jokes feel out of place. What’s more: this show has these things that you’d think are random jokes at first, yet prove to be important plot points later on, like the prank photo that Tiger made on Barnaby’s cell phone and the suit designer being claustrophobic. It’s all weaved wonderfully together.
Rating: ** (Excellent)

  1. I have a feeling that this new weird looking fire guy isn’t necessarily a “villain”, or at the least doesn’t see themselves as one.

I think they’re more of an antithesis to Tiger, a hero that doesn’t believe criminals deserve to be live and focuses on being judge/jury/executioner.

  2. Since he has only killed homicidal criminals at this point, I also have reservations about the pure villainy of the character. Either way, I like his character design; he looks terrifying.

The glimpse into Barnaby’s past make me wonder if he’s intentionally announcing his identity in hopes of attracting attention from the man that killed his parents.

I thought it was interesting that Fire Emblem was going to be suspended from the show, because he couldn’t prove that he didn’t kill the inmates. It works as a little corporate cowardice and implied casual prejudice, but considering the rest of his identity, the city still came off looking pretty decent through the myriad ways the inhabitants aren’t dicks.

  3. @ DmonHiro : My thoughts exactly.
That guy seems to be targeting criminals. He even shot a small flame at the bomber guy’s hand to make him let go of the producer of HeroTv, who is just an innocent bystander, before proceeding to burn the guy whole. I’m guessing that he may be similar to Barnaby in that he is targeting this “Ouroboros” organization or something. I’m definitely waiting in anticipation for the next episode.

  4. He may not be a villain, but I’m pretty sure the guy is going to be an antagonist to Kotetsu at least because of his lack of qualms about killing. I also think that this whole situation, especially Barnaby’s violent attempts to get information from that thug and Kotetsu trying to stop him, might become the biggest conflict between the two heroes yet in the next couple of episodes. I’m glad that the Archer Next is going to be in episode 7, this looks like it could be an interesting mini arc.

  5. Wow that was a really nice episode. A bit disappointed that it didn’t focus much on Fire Emblem though. Love his flaming flamboyant-ness though,so long since we had such a camp character! And I think the person at the end is the same person that burned the news clipping previously(was it the judge?I forgot). And the action scenes with the gunmen look alike was really neat 🙂

  6. Kotetsu is so immature! But that’s what makes him fun. The suit designer is growing on me too, he and Kotetsu have pretty good chemistry as well. (Actually…Kotetsu has good chemistry with basically everyone in this show!) I quite liked this episode except for the whole “let’s let go of the criminal so that he can take a hostage”. They really just brought that hostage situation on themselves.

  7. The newcomer is in the opening credits sorta in the same sequence as the Heroes are, so I’d say he’s more of a vigilante than a villain as well.

And I’m enjoying Fire Emblem more than I thought I would. He kind of has the feel that Hana from Tokyo Godfathers does in that he’s nice to everyone and no one really seems to hate him.
