Summer 2012 Kaleidoscope – Week 35

#1: Natsuiro Kiseki OVA: Oh my god. This OVA was just seven minutes long, so not a lot of stuff happened in it. But I really have to say to every fan of Natsuiro Kiseki: WATCH THIS. You’ll understand why once you do. – 5.5/8 (Excellent)

#2: Nazo no Kanojo OVA: You know what? This actually was a better conclusion that the one of the TV-series. whereas Milky Holmes below was just a random alternative story, this one continues where the series left off and develops the characters even further. It does introduce a bunch of ghosts from out of nowhere, which was a bit out of place, but the effect it had on the characters made it worth it. – 5.5/8 (Excellent)

#3: Kokoro Connect – 08: This was the best episode of the second arc so far. Up till now things were just build-up with a lot of angst, but this one carried it further to the people around the main cast, and the characters started thinking on how to solve their problem and deal with it, rather than running away from it. It definitely made all characters stand out more, even Yui, who didn’t make an appearance. – 5.5/8 (Excellent)

#4: Phi Brain – 46: With this episode we really have a side-cast in which the members all stand on their own. They’re no longer part of that group of side-characters standing between the male lead and the main villain, but they all developed differently throughout the series. I have to say, after how repetitive this series used to be, they definitely made up for it with these latest episodes and their variety. – 5.5/8 (Excellent)

#5: Polar Bear Cafe – 22: This really was another hilarious episode. The first half had Polar Bear at his trolling best, while the second carried the Penko story further, and both really made me laugh. Polar Bear Cafe still misses something at this point, though: a great ending. If they can manage that I’ll be entirely happy with this series. – 5.5/8 (Excellent)

#6: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 – 02: Oh god, no: not another Supernatural that releases batches of six episodes at once! That’ll be a pain to cover. Anyways, this was great build-up. The storyline is still the same as the original Yamato-series, but with a ton of stuff added and updated to modern standards. Think of a bunch of new characters, extra detail in showing how everyone prepares for such an epic journey ahead. Oh, and the soundtrack is still godly. – 5/8 (Great)

#7: Saint Seiya Omega – 21: In this episode Mars reveals his evil plans: he wants to recreate the world because it is rotten. It’s a bit unfortunate that he doesn’t explain exactly why it is rotten… Either way this was a training episode that was meant to bring Kouga on his feet again and at the very least the atmosphere of this episode was rock-solid. I have no idea who that cameo was, but he definitely convinced me that he was what was needed to get Kouga to stop angsting. – 4.5/8 (Good)

#8: Dantalian no Shoka OVA: I’m not sure why, but this week has a lot of OVAs released. Dantalian no Shoka’s OVA is the most conventional of the bunch: it’s just another episode indistinguishable from the TV-series. It’s neither the best nor the worst story of the series, and the atmosphere still is as good as I remember it to be. So yeah. It’s a nice watch if you liked the series, though not really a must. – 4.5/8 (Good)

#9: Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon – 20: I just realized: did Tori actually do anything this season? I mean, his charm in the first season was that he was completely different from the rest of the cast, yet was forced to stand in the center of everything. Here he just runs around naked while everyone else solves all of the problems. – 4/8 (Enjoyable)

#10: Tantei Opera Milky Holmes – Alternative One: Wtf… just, wtf. I was looking forward to this one, being a fan of the TV-show and all, but this one really took me by surprise: it actually takes itself seriously. Honestly: this episode was what Tantei Opera Milky Holmes would have been if they didn’t put effort into making a premise that stood out, and if they didn’t throw in that hyperactive nonsensical storytelling and just went with a conventional direction. There now is a male lead as well, for some bizarre reason. This just shows how easily Milky Holmes could have sucked, with a clichéd set-up, stupid mysteries and unremarkable dialogue. This OVA definitely was not good, but it reminded me why I became a fan of the TV-series. – 3/8 (Mediocre)

Edit: ah, that explains: the creators for this short are completely different. This episode didn’t have the original director, but instead we have the director of Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angel. Things make a lot more sense now.

  1. Haven’t seen the OVA (and probably will not), but as far as I know this OVA is based on the original PSP game (from which the anime spawned), with the male lead, and “serious” plot.

  2. Sucked. Just plain old sucked. It was so generic and boring. Man, JC Staff sure made a really lame and generic concept into something awesome.

  3. I did not think it was bad at all. Enjoyed it as well in a different way. If I remember correctly, the game itself is actually serious. The TV show turns out to be different and much more light hearted. I don’t know if you know about the Galaxy Angel series but the game, the source, is serious. The anime on the other hand was completely different. No plot but pure comedy with the same characters. Since I watched the anime first, I enjoyed it a lot and was under the impression that it was a comedy franchise which was proven wrong once I started to play the games.

  4. “Oh god, no: not another Supernatural that releases batches of six episodes at once!”

In fact the 2 first episodes have been released a few months ago. The movies that aired in theaters are released in the format of several ova in blu-ray depending on the length of each movie. You just have missed the first blu-ray release ^_^

  5. The “ghost” are cross-over main characters from the author’s other work, Discommunication, for the fanboys/fangirls out there. Not really ghost, but one normal girl and a supernatural being(a fox I think)

  6. Judging by your screenshot, it was Cygnus Hyouga.

Main-main Characters (bronze saints) from the original Saint Seiya:
    – Pegasus Seiya
    – Dragon Shiryuu
    – Cygnus Hyouga
    – Andromeda Shun
    – Phoenix Ikki

Ikki seems to be the only one that hasn’t made his cameo so long.

      1. Yeah he had one of his eyes bandaged by the end of the original series and during Shun’s flashback in ep12.

Two theories: 1. His eye healed… This happens quite often in the world of Saint Seiya… 2. Giving some of the rumors that leaked out, some believe that what Kouga met was simply a manifestation of Hyoga’s cosmo.

  7. It has to be noted that, unlike with Shun and Shiryu, Hyoga’s name was not in the episode’s title. This fits with the fact that his name was not said in the episode.

Hyoga had the most issues among the “Legendary Saint”, though the one with the biggest issue has not been introduced yet. The one referenced on this episode, in other words the woman he said he could no longer see, was his mother who died when he was a little kid and the ship they were sailing in started to sink, she opted to stay on the ship so that Hyoga could have the last spot in the last lifeboat.

  8. Hyoga is know for being a crybaby. He cried in nearly all his fight and was forced to kill nearly all the person important for him(or the most loved person of a person important for him). he had the saddest fights in all saint seiya.

the episode 14 of Omega was a remake (in less violent and sad) of the 2 fight Hyoga had with his masters

    He killed (big spoiler)

    his master
the master of his master (just after he learn him the technique for killing him)
the fiancé and bodyguard of the girl who saved his life(after making believed to the guy he killed his promised because she was a traitor)
    his childhood friend

    1. There was also the movies (non-canon of course).

1st movie – His new “girlfriend” is possessed by the Goddess Eris and tries to kill Athena.

2nd movie – He gets brainwashed and forced to fight Shiryu.

3rd movie – Unlike the other Bronze Saints, Hyoga is given the chance to obey the bad guy and be spare, which he refused of course.

4th movie – A bad guy shields himself using the memory of his mother, forcing Hyoga to tearfully destroy said memory in order to defeat his opponent.

    2. Yeah, Hyoga pretty much always fight some people that’s important to him. He might be the second saddest character aside from Ikki. Ikki pretty much never gets a break that the others get

  9. Actually Tori did do something this episode, he broke out of the corner that Tres Espania tried to force them into by using Horizon to answer the question why Musashi doesn’t attack England for abusing their history recreation event. Since Horizon is both the ruler of Musashi and a Automaton(Automaton can only make the most logical decisions and answer accordingly. In season one, Tori used a language and logic fallacy to force Horizon to answer her true feelings), she answered and explain perfectly why she does not consider Mary’s execution to be an abuse and what she says goes for Musashi. He also left Musashi a leeway, stating that if Horizon ends up finding a reason or understanding the circumstance, then Musashi will not hesitate to wage war on England.

Unfortunately Tori is going to be naked and fooling around for pretty much most of the time. He literally cannot display other emotion besides happiness and smiling, or else he dies. He’s completely useless in fights because he contracted himself to only uses self-created skill/spell(like Noriki’s 3 hit knock out), one of them is neutralization of attack from cute girls, where attack from any women will not do him any harm, the other is heaven’s censorship, which basically covers up his shameful spot at all angles

  10. Yes, nice to see it show up in the list, Space Battleship Yamato 2199 has been freaking awesome so far 🙂
