Steins;Gate – 25

So, a number of people wanted to know my views on the Steins;Gate OVA that recently came out. I finally had some time today, so I finally got the chance to check it out. And really: to be honest I found it rather boring.

I don’t mean the episode in its entirety: the way it ended obviously was quite good and a nice lead-in to the movie to have Okabe and Kurisu finally become a couple, and the revelation of Daru’s future wife added to that made this definitely an OVA with a point, rather than the usual DVD specials we usually see. I liked that.

Apart from that though, the rest of this episode was just random banter while everyone went for a trip to America. And that random banter still was quite annoying to sit through, and it just wasn’t fun to watch, having Okabe act like an ass throughout the entire episode. This is already something that got on my nerves a lot throughout the TV-series, and at the very least Daru wasn’t as annoying this time.

  1. What this OVA showed (to me at least) was that everything had gone back to normal (craziness) – but Okabe had matured, as seen in his scenes with Kurisu (who was pretty awesome).

Okabe’s stupidity was quite annoying in the beginning, but it did serve a purpose.

  2. Well, that banter is what made me like Steins;Gate in the first place, along with the otaku jokes. The serious and dramatic sci-fi plot that followed is what made me fall in love heads over heels with it (which is rare for me since sci-fi stories aren’t usually my thing).

You never seemed to like the comedy aspect of it though so it’s no surprise you didn’t really like that OVA. It’s a throw back to the early days of Steins;Gate though so for anyone who liked those, it’s a nice feel-good OVA they’ll want to see.

    1. Agreed, that banter was a bit of a peak into the world of Otaku’s which is very popular in Akihabara, and thrives there as it is right now. It shows the cultural growth with a bit of history lesson from the electronic sales industry to the full blown electronic entertainment relations (with main expansions on the novelty products.)

Aside from that, it shows the different sorts of Otaku’s, the cosplayer, the @channeler, the hacker/ecchi gamer, and the bored/satyrical playful actual nerd that hangs with them all.

To be honest, this anime was great at delivering that sort of culture, the kind of stuff you can never get from a lot of anime ~ this would go along with N.H.K. and those kind of mangas though.

  3. ehehe, I didn’t have high expectations of it, since it was just a bonus episode. Though, they did contradict the side materials because Daru’s future wife appearance doesn’t even look the same as she appears in the OVA.

Ah well, the 8bit sequel game has been translated, perhaps it’ll offer up some fun.

  4. It’s completely the opposite.
I like Okabe’s stupidity! To me, it’s the selling point.

    LOL.
    “Maximum autism.”
