Spring 2021 Coverage & First Episode Awards

Wooper: Spring has finally sprung, and with it comes one of the biggest anime seasons in a long while. Over the past two weeks, we’ve published our thoughts on 30 different premieres, but there were a dozen others that we skipped for the sake of time and/or self-respect. Despite those omissions, however, I feel pretty good about our new lineup. We’ve got follow-ups to a pair of 2018’s best shows, adaptations of a beloved manga and an acclaimed light novel, and a promising original project that’s managed to fly under the radar thus far. Lenlo’s Throwback Thursday column will continue uninterrupted, and our weekly recaps will return as a home for everything we’re watching that isn’t receiving full write-ups. We’ve got the results of our First Episode Awards after the jump, as well – that’s our way of saying goodbye to the limbo of first impressions season, and hello to the grind of weekly-ish blogging. Wish us luck!

  1. I feel that with the existence of 86 I don’t need to continue with vivy, same how I don’t need to watch jouran because I can just watch mars red and Megalobox has me covered for a boxing show so I don’t need to bother with cestv.
I am shoujo trash so I’m watching the shoujo shit this season of course.

    1. Oof, I’m not sure which was better – ep 2 of Mars Red or Jouran. Both were a step down from the first in my book.

  2. From what I have heard of the manga, tge Shakan King anime will get better. So please do not write it off because of one bad episode

    1. I’ve actually had a bit of trouble finding the next episodes – I’ll have to look again. I’ll definitely give it a few more, but I’m really worried about the character designs – I just don’t see that improving.

  3. You’re not going to cover that (conspicuously horny) magical boy series from the creators of Boeibu and King of Prism where the fairy boys turn into buff ikemen to solve people’s problems (in Madoka Magica-ish dimensions)? For shame…

    1. “from the creators of Boeibu and King of Prism”

As enticing as that sounds, I’m booked this season.

    1. @zyzyx420 I could only watch two episodes of vivy before just giving up on it, I hated the blockbuster style it was going for and the robobear’s expositional dumps were rushed and un-engaging, rather than using the potential setting for anything more than a backdrop.
I also thought the eye hacking thing during the escape sequences was contrived aswell.

      1. The talking speed is a bit fast but it kinda suits an all powerful AI. Reading the conversation is just slower than hearing so can’t really do much about that.

As for the other thing, I actually liked it. I for one fell for it initially but realized that giving the goggles perspective was meant to key in the viewer as to what happened. And the show doesn’t seem to hold back when it doesn’t want to so I didnt find it contrived tbh.

Definitely the show I’m most looking forward to.

        1. @Zyzyx: I think it was also the guilty crown vibes it gave me too.
As it stands I got on better with 86 and might even wait for the dub and marathon it, its kind of more of a preference thing with me in that I’m more into the military stuff.
