I’m what you’d call a “Slayers-noob”. Before the summer season started, I hadn’t seen anything of the franchise so far, so this series seemed like a good opportunity to check out what the hype was all about. As it turns out, Slayers Revolution definitely wasn’t the best place to start, and I’m still wondering where I found the patience to continue watching this series.
My big problem with Slayers Revolution is that there’s absolutely nothing that stands out: the characters are decent, but none of them is memorable or well developed, even the ones who are supposed to be new. The storyline also keeps the series going, but never did it really catch my interest. In terms of episodic stories, the best this series could come up with is rolling a bunch of giant balls up a hill. The comedy made me chuckle occasionally, but nothing more. The only battle that was even remotely interesting was the one at the final episode. Other than that, they’re just a bunch of people throwing spells at each other until one party dies.
Sure, Slayers may have been revolutionary when it first aired, but I’m judging this series, not the original one, and I’m doing it on today’s standards. In that case, there just isn’t anything remarkable about this series. The thing I like about fantasy is the interesting ideas that can be put in it, which only can be limited by the creator’s imagination. Not even once did this series try to be original. And okay, I can understand that the series couldn’t be original with its main characters, but even the storyline for this series, which could have been anything the creators would have liked, just feels uninspired and done before.
So overall, if you’re a slayers fan, you can just ignore this review and enjoy the series for what it is, because it seems to be much of the same and many of the characters that were fun to watch and fleshed out in the first seasons will return for more fun. However, if you aren’t a Slayers fan like me, then Slayers Revolution isn’t going to make you one. It’s a moderately entertaining fantasy-series in a genre that has much better to offer, and I can only hope that the next season is going to be a bit more exciting.

I’d encourage you to go back to the original series (or the second season, NEXT, which is generally regarded as the best one). What I’ve seen so far of Revolution is nostalgic, but … I agree that it doesn’t have much to offer someone who’s not yet a fan. Of course, Slayers as a whole does kind of rely on how much you like random fantasy silliness, but it can really pull things together when it needs to.
By far, this season was the disappointment of the four seasons so far. It had none of the cute comedy of the first three, it had none of the dire situations the first three, etc etc.
JCStaff seems to be a budget studio these days.
I wouldn’t recommend this series to start because it sucked compared to the first three seasons.
I am pretty sure the second part of Revolution (I think it will be called Glory), will be better (the second part of the Slayers series were always better IMO)
Also keep in mind they were trying to tell the fifth novel’s story after the seventh. Gourry needs the Sword of Light in this story so Pokota was born. Dulclis is an actual character from the novels though he was changed dramatically for REVOLUTION.
Anyway this series has been disappointing so far, however I wouldn’t consider REVOLUTION or GLORY to be different series or even seasons, even if they are. This is following the same format as the first three seasons. Each one consisted of two arcs, each one loosely connected to the last.
The problem so far with REVOLUTION is that they are trying to hard. This series does it’s best when the characters are forced to randomly wander around the main plot. This season was bogged down with too many pointless characters controlling the flow of the story.
Now, this may be considered a spoiler but here-goes. The second half seems to be based around the sixth book, which focuses on the darkest villain of the first half of the novels. Zuuma. His goals aren’t as drastic as villains to date but if he’s anything like he is in the novels, expect a lot of cold, violent fights upcoming. A much less kid friendly story to be sure.
I am a Slayers Fan and as so i think you all should accept slayers revolution because there is a big time difference and the story is a straight off continuation with the exception of a major storyline
Slayers Revolution was very much like watching a modernized version of the movies, it had some plot, though vague and kinda pointless, but it was like the traditional animes in that there wasn’t but a few actual plot episodes and twice as much BS.
They did a terrible job of closing up the first half of the seaon and in that, I’m a little disappointed, as a long term slayers fan/
