Re:Creators – 15 [Waves Approach the End of Wandering]

This week’s episode didn’t have any action once again but there is a lot more movement on the main plot as each faction solidify their alliances and plan out their new moves.

As speculated last week, the latest creation has a snowball’s chance in hell in be competitive against every other creation as her only power is flashing her panties to seduce men. That doesn’t comes as a surprise since her source material is an X-Rated eroge ported over as an all-age version and with Mamika out of the picture, it’s up to Hikayu fill in her shoes with her  future magical powers via fan side release. I’m skeptical that there is enough time or compelling development to do that since it will just be a repeat of a naive kind-hearted girl coming to terms with the harsh reality of this world. Her creator doesn’t fare any better as his buck-tooth appearance and behavior towards creations leans heavily into the more unsavory end of the anime fandom. Out of all of the creators, he is truly a terrible human being.

As her creator speculates, Alice does something very out of character this episode and that is to seek out the help of Magane. For a creation that is pretty meat-headed and relies on brute to win the day, this is a radical departure from her ideology of honor and absolutes. Seeing the batshit insanity that is the money-bathing Magane trouncing around half-naked in a towel go along with her polar opposite is the sort of risk that Re:Creators needs to take if it wants a strong finish. With some incoming power-ups courtesy of her own creators and having Magane take part in  her ambiguous plans, this bores enough potential for a payoff that will definitely shake things ups as the series goes closer to its conclusion.

Blitz has always been an enigma with his backstory and reasons for staying on Altair’s side. His story has been now revealed to be a tragic and dark history with him killing his own daughter in order to prevent a catastrophe in a cyberpunk universe. It’s just that when the show try to link his backstory to Altair is when it gets a little creepy. As with Rui’s sudden transition from being a twat to a stewart defender of the real world, we miss all the nuisances and buildup to his confession to Altair and makes it seems rushed while coming out of the left field. It could have been a cool parallel story like something along the lines of Joel and Ellie’s twisted relationship in The Last of Us but Re:Creators really dropped the ball when it comes to those two.

  1. As speculated last week, the latest creation has a snowball’s chance in hell in be competitive against every other creation as her only power is flashing her panties to seduce men.

Take a closer look at her job class. (Damn, Altair is like Gamemaster-level OP.)

Huge reveals in Altair’s scene. Selesia is a Pilot. Yuuya is a Shaman. Rui is a Golem Master. (See, I would have pegged him as a Pilot too. Golem Master makes his mecha something like a semi-autonomous summoned creature. Can he summon or take over other mecha?)

Out of all of the creators, he is truly a terrible human being.
I don’t know if I’d go that far, yet. He did write an eroge that got popular enough to warrant an all-ages port. Which means the non-porn part of the story was pretty good. Think Fate/Stay Night, etc. He does get pervy but it seems more for comic effect rather than Wakame-level malicious. Sadly, there are creeps like this in real-life who show up at idol handshaking events. And then you gotta wonder about the organizers who still carry out these events (albeit with tighter security). I’ll call him a terrible human being if he tries what Wakame does to the Tohsaka girls.

About Blitz, yeah, I’m sad he doesn’t get his story fleshed out more. But I think he’s meant to be entrenched in Altair’s side of the fence and to minimize his screentime so the other more popular characters get more. Unfortunately, you can’t have a good fight without more than one side in conflict.

It’s just that when the show try to link his backstory to Altair is when it gets a little creepy.
? Do you mean Blitz identifying with Altair as someone like her daughter being the reason why he fights for her, even after realizing she’s been lying about what they’re working towards?

Actually, I do wonder if that’s what Altair meant by “Surely, you’ve realized.” It’s not clear to me whether Altair has been telling the same thing to everyone when trying to convince them to work for her. Or what Blitz has seen working from his side of the fence. Major weakness about this show: You’re expected to jump to conclusions. And later reveals aren’t quite enough evidence to confirm your theories. I’m reminded of this scene from Men in Black 2 where Tommy Lee Jones goes: “I like to keep my enemies confused.” to which Will Smith retorts: “We’re all confused.”

  2. I enjoyed this episode and watched it twice. Thus it washed some of the bad taste from the last episode (not the recap, that was good). And it makes me angry that the next episode is some special. Arragghh.

On the Blitz-Altair scene there seem to be some arguements on the net that the translation has failed to convey what actually is going on.

Aliceteria was really scary. The way she looked and talked to Megane would unnerve me if I knew her.

Maybe they’re going to leave the 2nd course with an open ending for a third course due to it’s popularity? Is it hitting original SAO level of fanboy frenziness yet? That spawned a second double course season, OVAs, a movie, a slew of playstation games, and apparently a new project that is supposed to cover the Alicerization endless novel series “arc”? Also wondering if there’s some time skip involved with this special. Hm..i get the feeling the show might be making an unplanned plot shift and is buying time to make it work.

Maybe it’s intentionally very open to interpretation? Heck, given that Altair is the manipulative type makes it hard to tell if she’s being truthful in her words to Blitz. Altair encourages Blitz to go after the Creators but I’m not sure if it means to hunt them down or to try to get his personal wish granted, even though it may be against Altair’s ultimate plans. Is Altair sort of giving her blessing? Is Blitz going to try infiltrating the Creators’ team to get something for his daughter but ultimately intending to play trojan horse for Altair’s sake? How might something like that play out? Maybe we’ll see a struggle around him trying to figure out which way to go up to the last minute, especially if he starts to build a relationship with his Creator. That might be really interesting to watch. Mmm…but maybe it’ll further complicate an already complicated plot and they’ll just have him kill his creator in cold blood and have him stay on the antagonist side?

I’d love to see Magane’s job class. I don’t think it’s “clown”. She seems to be a “Noh” mask performer, which means she switches masks as needed but her true feelings are hidden. She’s another one that is hard to read. I suppose, when she looks serious, she’s being the most truthful? But that, too is hard to take for granted. My personal prejudice wants her to be a blank slate forced into playing a role set by her Creator. She does enjoy it but is aware that it’s a programmed response and repetition has made her bored, making her yearn for more to her character, especially when no one seems to pose a challenge? It might be interesting to see a flashback of her confronting her Creator. It seems she confronted him about something but he disappointed her and it apparently caused his death. It’s not clear if Magane actually intended to kill him because she seemed disappointed that he failed her challenge or something. Even though he designed her. Will we see more on this?

Aliceteria getting Magane to move seems pretty easy to understand though. She seems to be getting Magane to raise chaos as a diversion and hopefully create an opening for Aliceteria to act. Against who is still in doubt and how she will act is also a question mark. She’s probably not aware that Altair can somewhat see her every move? Or is she aware and has she planned a few steps ahead? She’s got a heck of a poker face now, which is pretty awesome. Meteora might need to change her evaluation of her if they meet again.
