OVA Impressions: Mirai Nikki

So… the Mirai Nikki OVA is only 8 minutes long. Yup, it’s definitely a pilot. Rather than a standalone story, I feel more like I watched a long introduction trailer here: it lightly touches upon the main premise, the important characters and the male lead, along with building the intrigue. A lot of the reasons why everything is happening are glossed over, though.

I like the looks of this, apart from the CG abuse perhaps. My guess is that all of these kids have this power to foresee the future, but I’m not yet sure how exact this is. I mean that in the way that if the reads that he’s going to die in 27 days, it’s really unavoidable for him to do so, or whether this knowledge allows him to avoid it. It’ll be interesting to see this series’ interpretation of foresight.

The lead character is decent: at first glance he’s not this generic lead, but at the same time there’s not anything special about him. His romantic interest being the school idol is ridiculously predictable, though. Can’t these people just be… normal students or something? In any case, this episode kept my attention, but it’s just an appetizer: it will leave you hungry if the main course isn’t served.

My guess is that the creators are really trying to use this pilot in order to gather sponsors. It’s much like the first Strike Witches OVA (in which characters actually wore pants and skirts when they weren’t flying), so the style of this OVA may not be its definitive style, depending on the wishes of these sponsors and/or the eventual staff that will be handling, if it gets made at all. In my opinion though, this is a pretty neat advertisement. It’s got some decent chances to actually make it as a series.
OVA Episode Rating: 7,75/10

  1. Well the ova did its job,it has you intrigued.

I won’t say too much about your comments since I don’t really want to spoil anything though I’d like to point one thing out:

“My guess is that all of these kids have this power to foresee the future”

There aren’t just kids, there’s adults too.

  2. Also, details about Yuno being the “school idol” are quickly forgotten; she has got to be one of the strangest romantic interests I’ve ever encountered XD

  3. This OVA looks like a long trailer, mixing different scenes.
Hope it does get a series, because Mirai Nikki is one of the best shonen in progress.

  4. I hope they really do make it into an anime. I really like the manga. Oh and no Yuno (the girl) is not like what she seems to be 😛

  5. Well since CherylHew and Jeremy have already hinted at it,i’ll add that I too had forgotten Yuno was a school idol and also

” His romantic interest being the school idol is ridiculously predictable, though”

I know they rushed a few things but go and watch the 5th minute again,Yuki says “And I know it’s unfair to you but I also had someone I liked”,basicly his romantic interest WASN’T the school idol (she wasn’t shown in the ova),and even at the end he doesn’t think to himself “wow the girl i love is going to help me” but “just for now,i have to ally with her” so even at that point he doesn’t have a romantic interest in her but just wants to use her as a way to survive.

I don’t consider any of this spoilers, since it’s all in the OVA if you rewatch.

Also, the manga ends at the end of the month, they might use that as an event to anounce the anime.

  6. Along with what everyone else has said here, just to make it clear, she is obssessed with him, not the other way around.

  7. This manga really deserves a two-cour anime, not this eight-minute crap. The manga is drawing to conclusion so now is the perfect time, too.

  8. What’s up with the people here? Derp spoilers derp from the first to almost the last post? It’s like I’m on a naruto board or something

  9. Ive waited like, forever, and that was it? Seriously, Mirai Nikki should get a decent anime adapatation! I agree with this though: Ohhh, you ain’t seen nothing yet. This series gets freaky reeeeeeal fast.

  10. Mirai Nikki! It’s very interesting, even if the main focus characters are in middle school. I hope this is a pilot and soon gets adapted to a real series. It’s the first series I’ve really liked since Higurashi No Naku Koro ni
