Nurarihyon no Mago – 03

This episode really was surprisingly good for something that just started out as a mere build-up episode. I mean, first of all this episode introduces itself as another one of those episodes like the first, in which Nura again has to keep youkai out of the sight of his friends. It’s not the most exciting at all, but necessary for the future of the series and to get to know these characters.

But as it wen ton, it made the whole premise of this series a lot more interesting, now that an onmyouji joined his class. If used WELL (and not as some sort of gimmick, that’s important here), this new girl could make this series a lot more dynamic now. My first impressions about her so far are positive: she’s someone who knows what she wants, and she didn’t waste any time to search for any places with youkai in it. Now that she actually knows that there are youkai inside Nura’s house, she’s bound to visit there more often. I also doubt that she really didn’t find Nura’s grandfather suspicious.

I think the weakest link in this series are Nura’s best friends, but really: I’ve seen much worse. They actually serve a purpose other than being annoying, they give Nura a reason for wanting to be a human, and as long as they’re well fleshed out, I don’t think I’ll mind them too much. I think my big problem with them is that they’re morons. Unlike the new girl, they didn’t seem to pick up any of the hints, despite being fans of the occult. I know they’re kids and all, but being kids doesn’t make them total morons.

  1. The guys are actually totally morons xD. The girls on the other hand…

Yura is an interesting character, greatly developed in the manga, but since they might only cover the Gyūki arc, she might not get the chance. Still, she might have enough screen time to show her skill 😉 … Hopefully

  2. I don’t think they’re total morons. If the onmyouji herself didn’t really see anything, what else do you expect of those guys? Mind you, they did sense some weird stuffs, but as normal people, that suspense itself is…kind of the thrill and distraction. They can’t really pinpoint out as the onmyouji girl did.

And if you were referring to Nura’s grandfather, I think it’s pretty normal to assume he’s human >> If you were a fan of occult, YOU wouldn’t even really believe your friend’s grandfather is a yokai.

  3. They are morons and a waste of space in the manga (Mago’s Table of Content Ranking in Jump drops like a rock whenever these morons dominate a chapter, which is thankfully rare) and I seriously hope DEEN aren’t stupid enough to pad out the anime with episodes featuring them.

“Yura is an interesting character, greatly developed in the manga, but since they might only cover the Gyūki arc, she might not get the chance.”

Director confirmed they’re doing the Tamazuki arc, so first 50 chapters will get animated. it’s a shame we won’t see Keikain Ryuuji.. fuck.. like most of my fav characters in the manga won’t even get animated.

  4. Uninteresting, yes. Morons, no.
Don’t call people morons just because you don’t like them.

@psgel: “they didn’t seem to pick up any of the hints”? What hints?
Yura knows there is something abnormal because she can sense youki. Do you expect normal human can do that too?

  5. I guess I am the only one who found the Onmyoji girl annoying. When she started strutted around Nura’s house, I thought, Whoa, hold up. Is this girl seriously showing herself around? I would have put my foot down and told her she could either confine herself to the designated areas or gtfo. I might have backed that up with the flat of my hand HotD-style.

  6. just hope that this won’t drag out for too long with fillers and all, and Kana won’t be a damsel-in-distress type of girl—really annoying.
